Volume 1 Episode 6 – Tea Party and Enrollment Form

I Just Wanted to Call Off the Arranged Marriage With the Princessโ€”Someone I Could Never Possibly Be a Match Forโ€”But for Some Reason, She Took a Liking to Me and Is Now Closing in on Me

In the salon within the mansion, my mother and Her Royal Highness the Princess are engaged in lively conversation.

โ€œWas Lucian a bit of a rascal when he was little?โ€

โ€œOh yes, he used to run all over the place. He hasnโ€™t changed much even now, though. I wish heโ€™d settle down a bit more.โ€

If that were all, I probably wouldnโ€™t have thought much of it, but since the person speaking is Her Royal Highness the Princessโ€”who hopes to be engaged to meโ€”it strikes me, as the person involved, as a rather complicated scene.

I feel like the moat is being filled in at an incredible speed. The pace is like a river swelling during a downpour. I canโ€™t help but feel itโ€™s only a matter of time before it overflows.

Itโ€™d be nice if there werenโ€™t any mother-in-law and daughter-in-law issues! I wish I could crack a joke like that, but I didnโ€™t have the mental bandwidth for it. Just watching them makes my heart race and leaves me feeling restless.

Suddenly, Her Royal Highness the Princess looked up.

โ€œLucian.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆGood morning.โ€

Even though Iโ€™d properly greeted her, my motherโ€™s scolding came flying at me from the side.

โ€œItโ€™s almost noonโ€”what do you mean, โ€˜good morningโ€™? You should get up earlier.โ€

โ€œBut I was tired.โ€

โ€œโ€˜Butโ€™ is no excuse.โ€

Morningโ€ฆ or rather, Iโ€™m already exhausted from getting a lecture this early in the day. And with Her Royal Highness the Princess watching with such amusement, Iโ€™m mortified.

Thereโ€™s probably nothing Iโ€™d rather not have seen than a typical mother-son exchange.

โ€œWell then, Iโ€™ll take my leave.โ€

โ€œHuh? Are you leaving already?โ€

The moment I arrived, Mother stood up.

As soon as I spoke, she shot me a piercing look, as if to reprimand me.

โ€œItโ€™s not โ€˜already.โ€™ I finished my business ages ago and was just waiting for you. Make sure you keep Princess Iris company properly.โ€

โ€œYeesโ€

When I replied casually like that, she gave me a sharp tap on the head as she walked past. Realizing my attitude had probably been a bit too bad, I sat down in the spot where Mother had been sitting.

The Princess narrowed her eyes as if watching something amusing.

โ€œI showed you a boring side of things, didnโ€™t I?โ€

โ€œNot at all.โ€

Her Highness the Princess shook her head slightly from side to side.

โ€œIt felt like a mother and son, and I thought, โ€˜They really seem like a family.โ€™โ€

โ€œIsnโ€™t that normal?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s rare among the nobility, isnโ€™t it?โ€

Maybe sheโ€™s right.

Sipping the fresh cup of tea the maid had just brewed for me, I let my thoughts wander to typical noble parent-child relationships.

โ€œThereโ€™s actually a pretty clear hierarchyโ€ฆ maybe?โ€

โ€œRight?โ€

โ€œBut isnโ€™t that the case in Your Highnessโ€™s family too?โ€

โ€œNo way.โ€

She gave a wry smile and flatly denied it.

โ€œIf youโ€™re talking about His Majesty, thatโ€™s just a pose. He does it because he knows people like him better when he acts approachable. When itโ€™s just family, heโ€™s strict.โ€

โ€œHuh, I canโ€™t really picture that.โ€

โ€œBecause heโ€™s His Majesty.โ€

The fact that she doesnโ€™t call him โ€œFatherโ€ might be due to that kind of boundary. If thatโ€™s the case, then perhaps our family really does have a relationship thatโ€™s unusual for nobility.

A sense of family thatโ€™s free from calculations of gain and lossโ€ฆ

โ€œBut right now, Iโ€™m about to be sold off to that family, arenโ€™t I?โ€

โ€œAhaha!โ€

She seemed to find that amusing.

The princess, who was the buyer, covered her mouth and laughed. It wasnโ€™t what I wanted, but I suppose this fulfills Motherโ€™s order to โ€œentertain Her Highness the Princess.โ€ Iโ€™ll just have to accept that.

I let out a sigh and reached for the remaining pastries, but my nose was suddenly flicked with a finger.

โ€œHuh? Is that not allowed?โ€

โ€œNo, itโ€™s name.โ€

name?

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆIris?โ€

โ€œMm.โ€

It seems I got it right. She nodded with satisfaction.

I suppose โ€œYour Highnessโ€ would be fine, but Iris seems dissatisfied with it. During the matchmaking meeting, she mentioned something about hating stiff, formal speech, so maybe she doesnโ€™t like being treated like a princess either.

โ€œEither way is fine,โ€ I say, popping a pastry into my mouth. Hmm, sweet.

โ€œHere, take this.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHere comes a document that doesnโ€™t seem to fit a tea party.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m just glad youโ€™re happy.โ€

โ€œWhich face was I looking at?โ€

โ€œThis one.โ€

And with that, she pressed her nose against mine. Does this princess want to turn me into a pig?

Itโ€™s annoying having her flutter her nose in front of my face like that, so I reluctantly wiped my hands on the tablecloth and took it.

A single sheet of parchment.

Iโ€™d been harboring a slight anxiety that she might say something like โ€œofficial engagement documents,โ€ but apparently that wasnโ€™t the case. Still, my brows furrowed as I looked at the contents.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆAn enrollment form?โ€

Whatโ€™s more, my name was signed on it. Still frowning, I looked up to see Iris, her elbows propped on the table, moving her bud-like lips as she spoke.

โ€œLetโ€™s go together, to the academy.โ€
