Episode 19 – It’s right next door

Iโ€™ve Been Working My Hardest as Manager of the Girlsโ€™ Track and Field Team, but Ever Since I Retired, the Team Members Have Been Coming at Me Like Crazy!?

โ€œAh, the usual view.โ€

When I arrived at the station nearest to school and stepped out of the ticket gate, what greeted me was a deserted roundabout that looked typical of a small-town station.

Normally, Iโ€™d be fed up with that sight, but right now, it actually made me feel calm.

Finally, I can go home.

Once I get home, I should be able to relax for a bit.

โ€œAlright, thatโ€™s it for today. Everyone, be careful on your way home.โ€

The teacher said that and then disappeared somewhere with a flourish.

โ€œSeriously, is that really how a chaperone is supposed to act?โ€

โ€œCome on, itโ€™s fine. Itโ€™s the same as always. Anyway, Mitchi, are you going straight home today?โ€

When Shiratori asked, the other two were also waiting intently for my answer.

โ€œUh, well, Iโ€™m going home.โ€

โ€œWhat? Why? What about the after-party?โ€

โ€œNah, I havenโ€™t planned anything like that. Besides, school starts again tomorrow, so I canโ€™t go overboard.โ€

โ€œCheee.โ€

To Shirotori, who was pouting, I said, โ€œMoe, everyoneโ€™s tired today, so letโ€™s do it tomorrow.โ€

Yukimuraโ€™s attempt to placate her made her look somewhat reliable, but I immediately shook my head.

Yukimuraโ€™s devotion is all just so Iโ€™ll mess her up.

Donโ€™t be fooled.

Be ruthless.

โ€œWell, Iโ€™m heading home. You guys live in the opposite direction, right? Be careful on your way home.โ€

I left the scene as if fleeing.

โ€œUghโ€ฆ Iโ€™m exhausted.โ€

After getting a little distance from the others, I let out a mutter without thinking.

Iโ€™m really exhausted.

What on earth has happened to those three?

Iโ€™m happy theyโ€™re all into me, but why are they all so differentโ€”each with their own twisted way of obsessing over me?

I thought all three of them were competitive and manly, just like athletes should be.

Hmm.

โ€œWhat’s up, Sen-chan?โ€

โ€œOh, nothing. I was just wondering how things got to this pointโ€ฆ Whoa!โ€

Before I knew it, Hayase was standing right next to me.

โ€œIsn’t it a bit rude to be so surprised just by looking at someone’s face?โ€

โ€œS-sorry. I mean, but Hayase, your house isn’t this way, is it?โ€

โ€œMy parents are out for work today, so I’m going to my grandma’s house.โ€

โ€œO-oh, I see. So Grandmaโ€™s house is this way, then.โ€

โ€œYeah. Actually, itโ€™s right next door to your house, Sen-chan.โ€

โ€œWow, what a coincidenceโ€ฆ Huh? Really?โ€

โ€œYou know the โ€˜Morikawaโ€™ house next door? Thatโ€™s my momโ€™s family home.โ€

โ€œOh, really?โ€

Ah, I know Morikawa san wellโ€”sheโ€™s a kind woman whoโ€™s been friends with our family for ages.

I never would have guessed she was Hayaseโ€™s grandmotherโ€ฆ Hmm, I have a feeling this is going to be a hassle.

โ€œSpeaking of Sen-chan, Grandma always used to say, โ€˜heโ€™s such a good girl.โ€™โ€

โ€œR-really? I feel like Iโ€™m the one whoโ€™s always getting stuff from her.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not true. You even helped her look for something you dropped in the garden once.โ€

โ€œOh, yeah, that happened. I think it was a hairpin.โ€

โ€œExactly. And you know what? Grandma said she wants to thank you properly next time.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s fine. Sheโ€™s always been so kind to me anyway.โ€

โ€œThat wonโ€™t do. So, next time, can I come to your house with Grandma?โ€

โ€œWith her?โ€

If sheโ€™s coming with Grandma, does that mean itโ€™ll be safe?

โ€ฆNo, wait. First of all.

โ€œHayase, what do you plan to do at my house?โ€

โ€œMy grandma wants to have a nice, long chat with you.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆWhy?โ€

โ€œWell, apparently Grandma actually wanted a son. But my momโ€™s her only child. She was hoping for at least a grandsonโ€”a boyโ€”but Iโ€™m her only grandchild. She just canโ€™t help but see you as her own cute son.โ€

โ€œI-I see.โ€

I seeโ€ฆ I guess?

But for some reason, itโ€™s hard to just brush that off.

โ€œSo, since thatโ€™s the case, itโ€™s okay for Grandmaโ€™s sake, right?โ€

โ€œUh, yeah, I guess.โ€

โ€œThen itโ€™s a promise.โ€

I donโ€™t know why, but just as Iโ€™d made that promise, my house came into view.

And of course, Hayaseโ€™s grandmaโ€™s house too.

โ€œOh, weโ€™re home already.โ€

โ€œYeah. Well, thanks for sticking with me this whole time. Come to think of it, I forgot to say my goodbyes to everyone.โ€

โ€œWell, weโ€™ll see them again tomorrow, so itโ€™s fine. Sen-chan, youโ€™ve been through a lot too.โ€

Though I was a little taken aback by how casually Hayase headed back to her grandmotherโ€™s house, I felt a slight sense of relief as I reached for the doorknob of my own home.

โ€œOh, Sen-chan.โ€

Just as I was about to open the door and step inside.

Hayase, who was also heading back inside, called out to me.

โ€œYou should probably put away those reference books by the window in your roomโ€”theyโ€™ll fade if you leave them out.โ€
