Episode 4 – I won’t give in on this

Iโ€™ve Been Working My Hardest as Manager of the Girlsโ€™ Track and Field Team, but Ever Since I Retired, the Team Members Have Been Coming at Me Like Crazy!?

โ€œYou’re so late! What were you doing, Michi?โ€

When I returned to the group, Shiratori was the one who ran up to me.

โ€œAh, uh, sorry. I had a little trouble finding her.โ€

โ€œCome on, if you’d been just a little later, I would’ve gone looking for you myself.โ€

โ€œOh, really?โ€

โ€œMasa, you really need to stop wandering off like that.โ€

Shiratori said this to Hayase, who had been following slightly behind me, and Yukimura chimed in, โ€œNow, now.โ€

It was the usual scene with the three of them.

Emotional Shiratori, slightly more mature Yukimura, and laid-back Hayase.

Praying that they would please stay just as they were, I kept a little distance from the three of them and headed toward the teacher.

โ€œLook, everyoneโ€™s here, so letโ€™s head to the hotel.โ€

โ€œOh, right. I called a taxiโ€ฆ oh, there it is.โ€

Uncharacteristically, the teacher had been thoughtful enough to call two taxis.

โ€œSo, letโ€™s split up. Senba and I will take this one.โ€

โ€œHono-chan, you take the other one by yourself.โ€

It was Hayase who called the teacher โ€œHono-chan,โ€ as if she were a friend.

โ€œRight, Sen-chan? Itโ€™s more fun to be with everyone than just the two of you, isnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œEh, well, I donโ€™t really mind either way.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s fun, right?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆYeah.โ€

Hayaseโ€™s pressure was so intense that I found myself nodding without thinking.

โ€œOh, youโ€™re right. Well then, Iโ€™m heading to the hotel ahead of you guys.โ€

Completely oblivious to my feelings, the teacher hopped into a taxi and drove off.

โ€œAhโ€ฆโ€

โ€œMitchy, letโ€™s get in the taxi too.โ€

โ€œR-right. Iโ€™ll take the passenger seat, then.โ€

โ€œMitsu, youโ€™re in the back. Come on, this way, this way.โ€

โ€œSen-chan, over here. Come on, get in.โ€

โ€œOuch, wait, wait, donโ€™t pull so hard!โ€

A tug-of-war broke out right in front of the taxi.

And of course, I was the rope.

Just as Yukimura and Hayase were tugging on my arms, Shiratori snapped her fingers.

โ€œCalm down, both of you! Youโ€™re making Mitchi uncomfortable.โ€

โ€œAhโ€ฆ s-sorry, Mitsuru. Did that hurt?โ€

โ€œSorry, Sen-chan.โ€

โ€œOuch, ouchโ€ฆ t-thanks, Shiratori.โ€

As soon as the two of them let go of my hands, Shiratori immediately grabbed them.

โ€œCome on, we have to get in the car now.โ€

โ€œAh, thatโ€™s cheating, Moe!โ€

โ€œMoe-chan, I wonโ€™t let you cut in line.โ€

โ€œGuh!โ€

This time, a tug-of-war broke out between Shiratori, who was trying to pull me into the car, and Yukimura and the others, who were trying to stop her.

I instinctively shook everyoneโ€™s hands off.

โ€œOuchโ€ฆ C-calm down, everyone.โ€

โ€œOh, sorry, Mitchi. Come on, stop getting in the way, both of you.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s Moeโ€™s fault.โ€

โ€œWhy? Mitchiโ€™s sitting next to me.โ€

โ€œI want to sit next to him too. Right, Masa?โ€

โ€œYeah. So letโ€™s settle this fairly with rock-paper-scissors.โ€

At Hayaseโ€™s suggestion, the three of them formed a circle and raised their fists.

Their expressions were utterly serious.

They were radiating a determination and intensity to win that was several times stronger than during a match.

โ€ฆWhy donโ€™t you save that for the game?

โ€œHere we goโ€”rock, paper, scissors!โ€

Thump.

Shiratori had rock, while Yukimura and Hayase had paper.

โ€œWait, no wayโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYesss, I won. Come on, hop in the back.โ€

โ€œSen-chan, hurry up too. Take the middle seat.โ€

โ€œUh, okay.โ€

While the two who won rock-paper-scissors hurried to get into the taxi, Shiratori looked as if the world were ending.

โ€œNo, this canโ€™t be realโ€ฆ Mitchi, Iโ€™mโ€ฆ going to die right here!โ€

โ€œW-wait, wait, Shiratori! Please, just get in the taxi quietly.โ€

โ€œB-butโ€ฆโ€

โ€œUgh, come on. Iโ€™ll buy you your favorite ice cream at the hotel shop when we get there.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆReally?โ€

โ€œYeah. So please, just get in already.โ€

The taxi driverโ€™s been glaring at me the whole time.

Please, hurry up before you make the grown-ups mad!

โ€œOkay, but you have to promise, right?โ€

โ€œY-yeah.โ€

I finally managed to convince her, and Shiratori climbed into the passenger seat.

Then Yukimura, me, and Hayase got into the back seat, and the taxi finally pulled away.

Itโ€™s about a fifteen-minute ride from here to the hotel.

It should be a short distance, but I was incredibly anxious.

Please, I just hope they donโ€™t start arguing in the car.

โ€œMitsu, if youโ€™re feeling tired, you can lean on me.โ€

โ€œSen-chan, want me to let you rest your head on my lap?โ€

Sweet temptations whispered right into my ear.

And Shirotoriโ€™s murderous glare from the passenger seat.

Will we actually make it to the hotel safelyโ€ฆ?
