Episode 9 – It’s chaos in front of the elevator

Iโ€™ve Been Working My Hardest as Manager of the Girlsโ€™ Track and Field Team, but Ever Since I Retired, the Team Members Have Been Coming at Me Like Crazy!?

โ€œWhoa, youโ€™re late. What happened? You werenโ€™t just hanging out with the other three, were you?โ€

When we arrived at the hotel, the teacher, who was waiting in the lobby, immediately started blurting out nonsense in a loud voice.

โ€œSorry, a few things came up.โ€

โ€œI see, I see. Go check in quickly. Also, what time is dinner?โ€

โ€œSeriously, you should be the one handling that kind of thing.โ€

โ€œHaha, Iโ€™m just not the type to handle that sort of thing.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s nothing to brag about. Um, Iโ€™ll set it up for 6:30 for now. You can all take a bath on your own after that.โ€

โ€œGot it. See you later, then.โ€

The teacher got into the elevator without waiting for us.

I, too, headed straight for the elevator after confirming that everyone had checked in.

Anyway, I just wanted to go back to my room alone and calm down for a bit.

Luckily, Iโ€™m on a different floor from the three girls, so they probably wonโ€™t follow me all the way to my room.

At least, thatโ€™s what I thought.

โ€œHey, Mitchi.โ€

Shiratori, standing in front of the call button, asked me without turning around.

โ€œWhatโ€™s up? Hurry up and call the elevator.โ€

โ€œHey, why is Mitchi the only one with a different room?โ€

โ€œWell, like I said before, we canโ€™t exactly have guys and girls in the same room, and unlike everyone else, Iโ€™m in a private room, so Iโ€™m on a different floor.โ€

โ€œWhy do you have a private room, Mitchi?โ€

โ€œW-well, itโ€™s because Iโ€™m the only guy here.โ€

โ€œLiar.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆHuh?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re definitely lying!โ€

Shiratori started frantically tugging at her hair, looking completely flustered.

โ€œLiar, liar, liar! Youโ€™re definitely planning to bring a girl back here!โ€

โ€œC-calm down, Shiratori! I have no intention ofโ€”โ€

โ€œThen how are you going to prove youโ€™re not lying!?โ€

โ€œW-wellโ€ฆโ€

โ€œSee? Heโ€™s flustered! Mitchi, youโ€™re definitely up to something!โ€

Terrified by Shiratoriโ€™s sudden hysterics, he looked at Yukimura as if seeking help.

โ€œH-hey, Yukimura, say something to him!โ€

โ€œI agree with Moe on that one.โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s absolutely no guarantee that Mitsuru wonโ€™t bring a girl back to the room.โ€

โ€œNo, but thatโ€™s notโ€”โ€

โ€œItโ€™s way too selfish of you to put the three of us in a room together just so you can have fun on your own. Weโ€™re not letting you go to the room until we figure out a plan.โ€

Yukimura stood in front of the elevator entrance and glared at me.

โ€œHey, Hayase, he has really gone too far this time.โ€

โ€œSen-chan, Iโ€™m sorry, but theyโ€™re right.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHuh?โ€

โ€œPlus, I heard the bed in your room is a semi-double. Why did you get such a big bed?โ€

โ€œW-well, that was the only room available.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s a lame excuse. Iโ€™m not letting Sen-chan go to the room until he shows some sincerity.โ€

Hayase also stood in front of the elevator.

โ€œW-wait a minute, everyone. Just move out of the way.โ€

โ€œNo way. Mitchi, if you want to go to the room, youโ€™d better clear up these suspicions.โ€

What suspicions are you even talking about?

You guys are just suffering from paranoia.

โ€œMitsu. I want to talk this out and come to an understanding. Will you listen to my conditions?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆGo ahead, say it.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t lock the door under any circumstances. How about that?โ€

โ€œW-whatโ€™s the point of that?โ€

โ€œAt least it means you wonโ€™t be having a secret rendezvous with someone behind closed doors, right? Or do you have something you want to do on the sly with the door locked?โ€

โ€œN-no, not really.โ€

โ€œBut what?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆIโ€™m holding onto the expenses, so I was worried it might be a security issue.โ€

โ€œThen letโ€™s have the teacher hold onto them. Is that okay?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

I couldnโ€™t say yes right away.

The room key was my only lifeline, since I was staying at the same hotel as these three whoโ€™d turned into emotional wrecks.

Leaving the door unlocked meant these guys could come into my room whenever they wanted.

That was something I wanted to avoid at all costs, butโ€ฆ

โ€œNo? Well, then, weโ€™ll all go to Mitsuruโ€™s room.โ€

โ€œFine, thatโ€™s fine. Just please step away from the elevator.โ€

I nodded, thinking that if I resisted any further, theyโ€™d probably offer even worse terms.

After all, they were just about to say something about my room, werenโ€™t they?

โ€œHmm, youโ€™re quite reasonable. Everyone, is that okay with you?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m fine with it. What about Masa?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m fine with that. Letโ€™s head back to our rooms for now.โ€

Finally having been given permission to take the elevator, I headed toward my room.

Arriving at my floor first, I got off the elevator, leaving the three of them behind, and trudged back to my room.

As soon as I reached the room, my hand almost reached for the doorknob, but I quickly pulled it back.

If Iโ€™d locked the door when they came to the roomโ€ฆ

My mood plummeted as I imagined what might have happened, and I collapsed onto the slightly spacious queen-size bed.
