Episode 53 – Coward

Mob Character Reincarnation Loner: As a Result of Supporting the Heroine Who Had Been Rejected, I Ended up Being the Recipient of Her Heavy Emotions…

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆPhew, that was fun.โ€

After spending some time at the Un-Museum, the Serizawa familyโ€”including Bungakuโ€”was taking a break on the buildingโ€™s rooftop garden, holding souvenirs.

โ€œMisuzu, Iโ€™m sorry. I tagged along on your date today.โ€

Mom, sitting next to me, said as she swung her legs back and forth.

Itโ€™s not really for me to say, but Mom has always been expressionlessโ€”I can never tell what sheโ€™s thinking. Or maybe she isnโ€™t thinking about anything at all.

By the way, Bungaku and Dad had gone to Starbucks to buy Frappuccinos for us.

โ€œI didnโ€™t mind, but Bungaku kept sneaking off to take stomach medicine.โ€

It was kind of funny to watch, though.

โ€œThatโ€™s funnyโ€ฆ no, wait, maybe I did something I shouldnโ€™t have. But I just really wanted to see it. Misuzu going on a date with Bungaku.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆHow was it?โ€

When I asked, sounding a little anxious, Mom replied with a smile that seemed to blow my worries away.

โ€œYou looked like you were having a really great time.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆI see.โ€

โ€œJust as I expectedโ€”thatโ€™s the โ€˜fake boyfriendโ€™ Misuzu found, all right.โ€

โ€œYeahโ€ฆโ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆHuh?

I couldnโ€™t help but look at Momโ€™s face. A faint smile played at the corners of her mouth, and she had a look of certainty on her face.

โ€œMom, wait a second. How do you know about that?โ€

โ€œA motherโ€™s intuition, I guess. You could call it a sixth sense. Oh, and by the way, Dad knows too.โ€

So thatโ€™s why Dad took Bungaku earlierโ€ฆ

โ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆOh (I get it)

โ€œOh, and by the way, the engagement is completely off the table now, so you donโ€™t have to worry about that.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆIs that okay?โ€

โ€œDad cares about you more than anything tooโ€ฆ Besides, watching you over the past few days, it was clear to me that youโ€™re in love with Bungaku.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆHuh? Am Iโ€ฆ in love with Bungaku?โ€

โ€œYou are. Without a doubt.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆSeriously?โ€

โ€œSeriously, seriously. You just donโ€™t realize it.โ€

Mom looked at my face, seemed to sense something, and gave me a exasperated look, as if to say, โ€œHere we go again.โ€

Itโ€™s trueโ€”I think I do like Bungaku. Heโ€™s the only one who enjoys the things I like with me.

In other words, Bungaku is one of a kind. Thatโ€™s what I thought.

Thatโ€™s why I was interested in him, and I thought I could fall for him.

โ€œWell then, what ifโ€ฆ today. What if we came to this museum just as a family, and happened to see Bungaku-kun here with another girl?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆHuh?โ€

Reacting to those words, I couldnโ€™t help but picture it in my head.

Today, we came here just as a family, and happened to see Bungaku having fun with Kirifuji Sena.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆThat might be a bit too much to handle.โ€

Just imagining it sent a chill down my spine. Even though itโ€™s supposed to be midsummer, Iโ€™m so cold I canโ€™t stop getting goosebumps.

I see. Hiyori must have felt the same way.

โ€œYeah. I donโ€™t know, just a hunch, but I think I get it. Hey, Mom, thereโ€™s just one thing I want to ask youโ€”how did you win Dad over?โ€

โ€œHuh? Thatโ€ฆ I donโ€™t really remember. I think I was the one who went all out. Like, I confessed right away and then locked him down immediately.โ€

โ€œI see. So speed is justice, huh?โ€

โ€œHehe, just like my daughter. You catch on fast. But maybe it really is better to be quick. Dadโ€™s probably grilling Bungaku right now, trying to get him to stop this โ€˜pretend datingโ€™ business.โ€

โ€œYeahโ€ฆ Dad would totally do that.โ€

Probably, Dad doesnโ€™t like that โ€œpretend boyfriendโ€ kind of thing. Heโ€™ll probably make it clear that the engagement is off for now and that we should go back to a healthy relationship (friends).

And as for what happens after thatโ€”whether we become a couple or notโ€”thatโ€™s up to me andโ€ฆ Bungaku. I think thatโ€™s how Dad sees it.

โ€œOh, Dad and Bungaku. Theyโ€™re back.โ€

Mom pointed to Dad, looking his usual self, and Bungaku, who looked a bit haggard.

Yeah. Heโ€™s definitely been grilled.

โ€œMisuzu, Sanae. Sorry to keep you waiting.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆWeโ€™ve been waiting.โ€

I took the new matcha frappe from Bungaku.

โ€œCome to think of it, this rooftop walking path is part of a famous garden. Why donโ€™t the two of you take your tiiiime and stroll around?โ€

Mom threw us a nice pass right there.

โ€œThatโ€™s a good idea. We still have plenty of time. Weโ€™ll take our time exploring the grounds, so feel free to go ahead.โ€

Dad agreed, shooting Bungaku a meaningful look.

โ€œUm, well then, since youโ€™ve both said soโ€ฆ shall we go, Misuzu-san?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆYeah.โ€

Nodding at Bungakuโ€™s invitation, we parted ways with Dad and Mom for a moment and walked along the rooftop garden path.

โ€œBungaku. Listen. About us being โ€˜pretend loversโ€™โ€ฆ maybe we should just stop.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆYeah. Youโ€™re right. It seems like the two of them had already figured out we were โ€˜pretend loversโ€™ anyway.โ€

โ€œBungaku, so Dad really gave you a hard time about it?โ€

โ€œHahaโ€ฆ Well, not exactly โ€˜gave me a hard time,โ€™ but I donโ€™t really like that approach. He just told us to go back to being friendsโ€”a healthy relationship.โ€

Bungaku laughed, looking a bit flustered.

ใ€€
This โ€œpretend boyfriendโ€ thing was actually my idea, but heโ€™s probably pretending it was his suggestion to protect me.

Iโ€™m sure Dad understands that, too.

Weโ€™re surrounded by couples, and Iโ€™m sure normal couples spend special moments here chatting or sipping fancy drinks. Or so I imagine.

But for me, a special moment isโ€ฆ doing silly things and having fun at a fun, exciting place like the Poop Museumโ€”just like we did earlierโ€”and laughing together while sharing that joy. Thatโ€™s what it means to me.

But I guess thatโ€™s a sensibility thatโ€™s a little out of step with everyone else. Thatโ€™s what I think.

In fact, there werenโ€™t any couples at the Poop Museum at all; it was mostly families with small children.

But Bungakuโ€”Bungaku is different.

He has the same sensibility as me, and he really sees me for who I am.

Soโ€ฆ I think Iโ€™d like to try being his real girlfriend next time.

I take a deep breath, trying not to let it show.

โ€œThere are couples everywhere around us, arenโ€™t there?โ€

โ€œHaha, yeah, youโ€™re right.โ€

โ€œBungaku, tooโ€”someday youโ€™ll fall for someone, confess your feelings, get rejected, get rejected, get rejected, and go through cycles of dating and getting dumped, right?โ€

โ€œI get dumped all the time. I canโ€™t deny that.โ€

โ€œThenโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆHuh?

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆUm, Misuzu?โ€

Well then, you should just go out with me.

I canโ€™t bring myself to say those single words out loud.

Why?

Why, why?

Why is that simple phrase stuck in the back of my throat, refusing to come out?

โ€œBungakuโ€ฆโ€

โ€œU, uh-huh.โ€

No good. Bungaku is staring at me with a worried look on his face.

I have to say it, I have to say it.

โ€œThe time I spend with Bungakuโ€ฆ is so much fun, so, um, I feel lonely, so, um, I don’t want to be apart from you, soโ€ฆโ€

Soโ€ฆ

โ€œI, I donโ€™t want you to date anyone for a whileโ€ฆ I donโ€™t want you to get a girlfriend.โ€

What a pathetic confession this is.

No, this isnโ€™t even a confession. Itโ€™s just me being selfish.

โ€œHaha, itโ€™s okay, itโ€™s okay. I donโ€™t think I could even get a girlfriend anyway. Iโ€™m the kind of guy who doesnโ€™t know if Iโ€™ll get one in high school, or even in my whole lifeโ€ฆ ha, ha, ha.โ€

Bungaku was sinking deeper into a funk.

โ€œBesides, I have a proven track record of getting rejected over and over, so I think you can trust me on thatโ€ฆ u, uuโ€ฆโ€

“F-fufu. Whatโ€™s that supposed to mean?โ€

Seeing Bungaku shed a single tear, I found myself smiling a little and finally calming down.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆBungaku, you were really amazing, werenโ€™t you?โ€

Even more so than Hiyori.

โ€œHuh? You mean itโ€™s amazing that I keep getting rejected?โ€

โ€œNo, thatโ€™s not it. I realized that putting your feelings into words takes a lotโ€”a lot of courage.โ€

Seeing Bungaku look puzzled at my words, I couldnโ€™t help but laugh as we walked along the garden path.
