Episode 7 – The type who starts with the form

My Childhood Friend, a Vtuber, Treated Me Like Trashโ€”Iโ€™m Never Producing For Her Again

Alone with a girl in a house with no parents around.

Aside from Yue, my childhood friend, this is a first for me.

If I start overthinking it, my voice might crack.

I went upstairs and was just about to enter Mizuta-sanโ€™s room whenโ€”

โ€œW-wait a secondโ€ฆ!!โ€

Suddenly, she stood in front of me with her arms outstretched.

Wait, Iโ€™m supposed to help set up the mic, so we canโ€™t start unless I go in.

โ€œItโ€™ll only take 10 minutesโ€”no, 5 minutesโ€ฆ!โ€

Mizuta dashed into her room as if sheโ€™d been flung back.

Immediately afterward, the sound of her rushing around echoed from behind the door.

It seems sheโ€™s frantically tidying up.

Or rather, shouldnโ€™t she have taken care of that before calling me inโ€ฆ?

โ€œAaaarghโ€”!! I just bought this!!โ€

โ€œI-it wonโ€™t closeโ€ฆ! N-no way, I canโ€™t let Komachi-san see thisโ€ฆ!!โ€

โ€œW-why is my embarrassing past here!? It was supposed to have all burned up!?โ€

Mizuta-sanโ€™s wildly excited mutterings kept flooding into my ears one after another.

Come to think of it, she really talks to herself a lot.

Well, as a streamer, itโ€™s not a bad habit, though.

Or maybe itโ€™s increased dramatically since she started being a VTuber?

As far as I know, even people who talk to themselves a lot tend to get tired of talking once they start streaming, and actually become quieter when theyโ€™re off the air.

โ€œHaa, haaโ€ฆโ€

Fifteen minutes later.

Finally, the door opened, and Mizuta-san peeked her head out, panting heavily.

โ€œC-come in.โ€

โ€œOh, okay.โ€

When I stepped inside, the room was surprisingly tidy.

Honestly, given those strange screams earlier, Iโ€™d braced myself for a much more disastrous scene.

However, there was one corner that clearly stood out as unusual for what youโ€™d call a typical high school girlโ€™s room.

A dual monitor setup, a microphone, an audio interface, and the PC itselfโ€”all sorts of streaming equipment.

And on top of thatโ€”

โ€œIt seems like the whole room is decorated in black. Do you like black?โ€

โ€œHuh!? N-no, thatโ€™s not it! Iโ€™ve definitely outgrown my โ€˜second-year middle school syndromeโ€™!! T-this is just a vestigial remnant, so to speak!!โ€

Mizuta-san panicked.

Well, I wasnโ€™t really thinking anything in particular, though.

I seeโ€”Mizuta-san must have been seriously obsessed with her โ€œsecond-year middle school syndrome.โ€

And it seems she was particularly deep into the whole black theme.

โ€œThatโ€™s kind of cute, actually.โ€

โ€œEh, eh!? M-my dark past!?โ€

โ€œYou can use stuff like that as material for your livestream.โ€

โ€œAh, ahโ€ฆ So you were talking about the livestream.โ€

Of course, most of the viewers just want to see her squirm and suffer over her dark past.

โ€œWell then, shall we set things up right away?โ€

โ€œAh, w-wait a second.โ€

What? Not again?

As I tilted my head in confusion, Mizuta-san blushed and looked away.

โ€œShall I make some teaโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œAh, sure.โ€

โ€œWould you prefer tea or coffeeโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œThen Iโ€™ll have tea, please.โ€

It was just a perfectly ordinary conversationโ€”so why was she acting so shy?

Was there some secret code I didnโ€™t know about?

Fortunately, it seems I was overthinking it. Mizuta-san left the room briefly, brewed some warm tea as if it were the most natural thing in the world, and came back.

As I took a sip, she looked up at me and asked,

โ€œH-how is itโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s delicious.โ€

โ€œEh, heheโ€ฆ Iโ€™m glad. T-this is actually the first time Iโ€™ve ever invited a classmate over to my house to serve tea like thisโ€ฆโ€

Iโ€™m not exactly a social butterfly myselfโ€”if anything, I lean more toward the introverted sideโ€”but Mizuta-san is a die-hard introvert.

Even asking me to help with the mic was probably a pretty bold move for her.

โ€œOh, my mom baked some cookies tooโ€”โ€

โ€œOh, Iโ€™d love some!โ€

โ€œThat was fast!? Komachi-san, donโ€™t you like my mom a little too much!?โ€

Well, I feel like that might be a bit of a misrepresentation.

I mean, Iโ€™ve never actually met her in person, but in my mind, Mizuta-sanโ€™s mom had already hit the maximum likability rating.

I mean, just the idea of an older woman who bakes delicious bread and pastries is way too awesome.

Mizuta-san brought over a few cookies, and we enjoyed them with some tea.

โ€œYeah, they go together perfectly.โ€

โ€œMother and daughter at the same timeโ€ฆโ€

โ€œMizuta-san, why do you always use such suggestive abbreviations?โ€

I know you like dirty jokes, but with that kind of abbreviation, it makes me sound like the absolute worst scumbag in an instant.

โ€œEhehe, sorryโ€ฆ But Iโ€™m just kind of giddy, I guessโ€ฆ or maybe a little excitedโ€ฆโ€

โ€œIs that so?โ€

โ€œAh, s-sorry! I-itโ€™s just me, isnโ€™t itโ€ฆโ€

โ€œNo, no, of course Iโ€™m having fun too.โ€

โ€œR-reallyโ€ฆ? Well, Iโ€™m glad to hear thatโ€ฆโ€

Mizutaโ€™s mood swings are still like a roller coaster.

Well, even so, she wasnโ€™t lying.

When you think about it, being alone in a room with a beautiful VTuberโ€”whose true identity only I know at schoolโ€”itโ€™s bound to make you feel a little strange.

โ€œWell then, letโ€™s get started with the setup this time.โ€

โ€œAh, yesโ€ฆ! T-this is it.โ€

Mizuta-san handed me a box.

Fortunately, it wasnโ€™t the USB-connected type.

Butโ€”

โ€œIsnโ€™t this a pretty high-end model?โ€

โ€œAh, yesโ€ฆ It cost about 60,000 yen.โ€

The microphone sheโ€™d chosen was made by a famous German manufacturer.

It was high enough quality to hold its own in a professional setting.

It was way overkill for her streams, which only had a measly five concurrent viewersโ€ฆ

Well, sheโ€™d already bought it, and itโ€™s better than having bad sound quality.

โ€œAre you the type who starts with the appearance first, Mizuta-san?โ€

โ€œHuh? H-how did you know thatโ€ฆ? A-are you, s-some kind of psychicโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

I thought that if I showed Mizuta-san a magic trick, sheโ€™d probably widen her eyes at every move and be genuinely surprised.

ใ€€โ—‡

As expected, setting it up wasnโ€™t that difficult.

Of course, Iโ€™m no expert, and I was just aiming for a level that would work for a live stream.

โ€œOkay, Mizuta-san. During the actual broadcast, please check and adjust the settings yourself to make sure youโ€™re not picking up too much background noise other than your voice.โ€

โ€œOh, y-yesโ€ฆ!โ€

โ€œRight now, Iโ€™ve set the filter a little stronger. If your voice sounds muffled, please adjust it back little by little while watching these numbers. Itโ€™s all about finding the right balance.โ€

Mizuta-san nodded repeatedly while taking notes on her smartphone.

Her fingers are still moving at an insane speed, as always.

โ€œUm, since youโ€™ve gone to the trouble of coming all this way, can I ask one more question? Itโ€™s not about the mic, but about my computerโ€ฆโ€

โ€œSure. As long as itโ€™s within my area of expertise.โ€

โ€œWhen Iโ€™m playing games, wellโ€ฆ the screen gets choppy. Itโ€™s fine when Iโ€™m playing by myself, but as soon as I start streaming, it suddenly gets really laggy. Could it be that my computer is brokenโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œNo, itโ€™s just that your specs arenโ€™t high enough.โ€

โ€œWhaaaat!? I paid so much for it!?โ€

Even though itโ€™s 2D, rendering a VTuber avatar, encoding the stream, and running a high-load 3D game all at onceโ€ฆ

Doing all of that simultaneously puts a strain on the PC beyond what you might imagine.

I explained that as briefly as possible.

โ€ฆI thought Iโ€™d broken it down simply enough, but partway through, Mizuta-san just stood there with her mouth hanging open, completely dumbfounded.

โ€œIn short, if you want stability, the surest way is to get another computer and run a dual-system setup.โ€

โ€œAโ€ฆ another computerโ€ฆ!?โ€

โ€œOr, thereโ€™s also the option of upgrading your current PC.โ€

โ€œOh, an upgradeโ€ฆ!?โ€

Like a deflated balloon, Mizuta slumped over, completely dejected.

โ€œI-I had no idea being a VTuber would cost so much moneyโ€ฆโ€
