Case 2 – A Small, Cute, Tsundere Childhood Friend

My Childhood Friend Is Just Too Cuteโ€”I Canโ€™t Have a Normal Relationship!!

On the way home that day, just as Iโ€™d decided to put some distance between myself and the two of them.

โ€œMakoto~ Want to walk home together?โ€

โ€œAlice, donโ€™t cling to Makotoโ€™s arm. Come on, letโ€™s head home.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆokay.โ€

My plan was about to be ruined right off the bat, but it would be unnatural to turn them down at this point, and I didnโ€™t want to see my two childhood friends get hurt.

So, I decided to walk home with them. We were all headed to the same place anyway.

โ€œMan, this year is shaping up to be a fun one. Fumi-chan and Makoto are in the same class, after all.โ€

โ€œYeah. I agree with that.โ€

โ€œWell, I think so too. Speaking of which, arenโ€™t either of you planning on getting a boyfriend or girlfriend?โ€

โ€œโ€˜โ€ฆโ€ฆโ€™โ€

The moment I said that, for some reason, it felt like the air in the room froze. Did I say something wrong?

I donโ€™t know, but it just feels off.

Itโ€™s early spring today and the weatherโ€™s nice, so itโ€™s actually pretty warm out, but for some reason, it feels cold right here.

โ€œMakotoโ€ฆ Iโ€™m gonna punch you.โ€

โ€œWhy!?โ€

โ€œHmm, Makoto~ Itโ€™s not really a good idea to say things like that to girls~โ€

โ€œI-is that so? Sorry. Iโ€™m not really good with this kind of thing.โ€

I see. So asking a girl about her boyfriend is a no-no. Iโ€™ll be careful not to say that again.

Judging by the way Fumika had been glaring at me with a demonic expression this whole time, that much was obvious.

โ€œIโ€™m totally fine with it, but Fumi-chan doesnโ€™t seem to be, so youโ€™d better watch it, okay?โ€

Alice said that with a wink, her index finger pressed to her lips. Alice really is so kind~

Itโ€™s a world of difference from Fumika.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆYou idiot, Makoto.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m so sorry.โ€

When she says that with that glare, all I can do is apologize profusely.

But I had no idea asking about boyfriend was such a big no-no.

Iโ€™ll have to be careful not to bring it up next time.

โ€œSpeaking of which, Alice. Didnโ€™t you have club activities today?โ€

โ€œYeah! We have the day off~ Iโ€™m so happy!โ€

โ€œYou seem so busy, Alice. I donโ€™t do any club activities myself, so I donโ€™t really understand what thatโ€™s like.โ€

โ€œFumi-chan and Makoto should join a club, too. Itโ€™s actually pretty fun, you know?โ€

Just like Alice said, Fumika and I arenโ€™t in any clubs. There are various reasons for that, but the main one is that itโ€™s just too much trouble.

I think Fumika probably feels the same way.

โ€œIโ€™m good. Iโ€™d rather just take it easy.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll pass, too. Just relaxing at home is just right for me.โ€

โ€œI see. Thatโ€™s just like you two. I wonโ€™t force you, but if you ever feel like doing something, let me know. See you later.โ€

โ€œYeah. See you both tomorrow.โ€

Our apartments are all right next to each other.

We live on the fifth floor of an eight-story apartment buildingโ€”Alice is on the right, Iโ€™m in the middle, and Fumika is on the left.

โ€œSee you later, you two.โ€

And just like that, my boring day came to an end.

โ€œItโ€™s been a while, Makoto.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆWhyโ€™d you come over?โ€

I was about to put my bag down and change when Fumika walked into my room.

Sheโ€™d already used her spare key to come in without asking this morning, so maybe I should take some precautions from now on.

โ€œWhy? Because Iโ€™m bored?โ€

โ€œWell, Iโ€™m bored too, so itโ€™s fine, but donโ€™t you think you should be a little more cautious, Fumika?โ€

โ€œA sense of danger? Why?โ€

โ€œWell, a girl your age is coming into a guyโ€™s room. Something could go wrong, right?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s fine. I know you wouldnโ€™t do anything like that, Makoto. And if you even tried, Iโ€™d cripple you for life.โ€

While she flashed me a cute, beaming smile, the words coming out of her mouth were utterly terrifying.

Her expression and her words were completely at odds with each other.

โ€œY-youโ€™re joking, right?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not joking. You have to train a dog properly, donโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not a dog! I mean, seriously, you really should be a little more cautious.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry. I wouldnโ€™t go into a guyโ€™s house alone unless it was Makotoโ€™s. Iโ€™m only here because I trust you in my own way.โ€

Once she put it that way, I couldnโ€™t think of anything to say in response.

Itโ€™s not like Iโ€™m thinking of attacking Fumika or anything like that, mind you.

Besides, if I were actually thinking that, I feel like Iโ€™d have confessed my feelings to Fumika by now or something.

โ€œO-okay. Well, if thatโ€™s the case, then fine. But more importantly, do you want to do anything?โ€

โ€œHmmโ€ฆ I donโ€™t really have anything specific in mind, so Iโ€™ll just lounge around.โ€

โ€œThen why not just go to your own room?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆDid you say something?โ€

โ€œNo, nothing at all.โ€

Her face remained beaming with a smile, but her eyesโ€”as cold as absolute zeroโ€”were fixed on me. I decided to keep my mouth shut; if I said anything else, not only would the atmosphere turn icy, but I might actually freeze to death.

โ€œStill, I wonder why Fumika isnโ€™t popular with guys.โ€

I think both the smile she showed me earlier and her usual cool expression are incredibly cute. Yamato told me thatโ€™s why Iโ€™ve become so picky, though.

Even so, I genuinely think Fumika is cute. Thatโ€™s exactly why I canโ€™t help but wonder: why canโ€™t such a cute childhood friend find a boyfriend?

โ€œItโ€™s not like she has a bad personality or anything.โ€

True, sheโ€™s pretty harsh with me, but she isnโ€™t like that with everyone else. If anything, sheโ€™s actually on the kind side.

Sheโ€™s pretty good at her studies, too, and judging by what I saw today, her housekeeping skills have improved quite a bit.

Hmm, I just donโ€™t get it.

The more I think about it, the less I have any idea why she canโ€™t find a boyfriend.

Iโ€™d like to ask her myself, but Iโ€™d rather not go through that awkward moment again, so Iโ€™ll hold back.

โ€œYouโ€™ve been standing there with your arms crossed, staring at me for a while now. Whatโ€™s up? If you have something to say, just say it clearly.โ€

โ€œNo, itโ€™s not like that. Donโ€™t worry about it.โ€

โ€œSaying that just makes me even more curious. Stop hiding it and just tell me already.โ€

โ€œNo, itโ€™s not like Iโ€™m hiding anything. I was just thinking how cute you really are, Fumika.โ€

Since she told me to say it, Iโ€™ll just be honest. Itโ€™s not like Iโ€™m trying to hide anything, and itโ€™s not a lie either.

I just told her exactly what I was thinkingโ€ฆ

โ€œW-waโ€ฆโ€

Fumikaโ€™s face turned bright red in an instant. She turned away from me and buried herself under the covers. Thatโ€™s my bed, by the way.

โ€œHey, Fumika? Whatโ€™s suddenly gotten into you?โ€

โ€œS-shut up, you idiot!โ€

โ€œHuh? Why am I suddenly getting yelled at? I donโ€™t think I said anything that would offend you.โ€

โ€œI said shut up! You idiot, idiot, idiot!โ€

Now that things had come to this, Fumika wasnโ€™t listening to a word I said. Since that was obvious, I didnโ€™t argue and just watched over her.

I couldnโ€™t see Fumikaโ€™s expression as she was wrapped up in her futon on the bed, but when I looked at her ears poking out, they were bright red.

Is she really that angry? What on earth did I do?

โ€œIโ€™m sorry, I guess.โ€

โ€œSeriously. You clueless idiot.โ€

โ€œClueless? What are you talking about?โ€

โ€œIf you donโ€™t get it, never mind. Anyway, can I borrow one of your manga?โ€

โ€œSure, go ahead. You can read any of the books in the house if you want.โ€

After venting all her frustration and seeming to calm down a bit, Fumika got out of bed and started rummaging through my bookshelf.

Watching her, I sat down on my own bed. Fumika had always been a bit of a difficult person, but I feel like sheโ€™s become even more so since starting high school.

Did I do something to make her hate me that much? No, since sheโ€™s changed this much, I must have done something.

โ€œI need to reflect on this.โ€

Watching Fumika rummage through the bookshelf, I muttered to myself. Perhaps she heard my mutterings, because she turned around and gave me a puzzled look.

โ€œWhat are you reflecting on?โ€

โ€œWell, Iโ€™ve been making Fumika mad all the time lately. I thought Iโ€™d reflect on that.โ€

โ€œY-you donโ€™t have to worry about that.โ€

โ€œI do worry. Youโ€™re my childhood friend, and youโ€™re important to me.โ€

Weโ€™ve been together since we were born, and weโ€™ve done all kinds of things together since we were kids.

To put it simply, Fumika is like my other half. I canโ€™t help but feel guilty for constantly making someone like that angry.

โ€œA, a dear childhood friend.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s right. So, if you have any worries or anything you want me to do, donโ€™t hesitate to tell me.โ€

โ€œW-well, then, I want you to let me rest my head on your lap.โ€

โ€œSure, why not? But why all of a sudden?โ€

โ€œI just felt like it! Is that wrong!?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not wrong. Well, go ahead.โ€

Since I was sitting on the bed anyway, I patted my lap a couple of times.

Then, looking a little shy, Fumika rested her head on my lap.

She lay back on her back, her beautiful blue eyes gazing up at my face.

Yeah, she really is cute.

โ€œHey, stroke my head.โ€

โ€œIt brings back memories. We used to do this all the time back in the day, didnโ€™t we?โ€

As I stroked Fumikaโ€™s head, I suddenly found myself reminiscing about the past.

I feel like the Fumika of the past was a gentler, more composed girl than she is now.

It really brings back memories.

โ€œYeah. It really does bring back memories.โ€

โ€œOnce again, I look forward to spending time with you from now on, Fumika.โ€

โ€œSame here, Makoto.โ€

As I stroked Fumikaโ€™s head, we laughed together.
