Episode 43 – Break

The Tale of Gerald Vader, the Heretic Knightโ€™s Rampage Through Another World

After the written exam ended without incident.

โ€œGerald-sama, I’ve been looking for you!โ€

Since there was a bit of time before the next physical exam, I was resting with Twina on a bench in the plaza behind the exam hall when Nora came charging over at incredible speed.
She must have been searching everywhere for us, as she was completely out of breath.

Come to think of it, the knight houses and the nobles had separate exam halls and buildings.

And they were quite a distance apart, too.

I think I heard from Alissa that putting nobles and knights from the same domain together could lead to knights cheating to boost their noble masters’ scoresโ€ฆ or something like that.

Even so, the academy grounds are ridiculously huge. How did she find us here?

Yanโ€ฆ wild instinct, maybe?

Well, never mind that.

โ€œNora, good work. How did the exam go?โ€

โ€œPhew, phewโ€ฆ Of course it went perfectly! How did you fare, Gerald-sama? Twina-sama?โ€

โ€œI did okay, I guess.โ€

โ€ฆI told Nora that, but honestly, I’m pretty confident about the written part.

After all, I still have memories of the game.

The flavor text on items and weapons is basically a treasure trove of trivia, miscellaneous knowledge, and obscure historical facts about this world.

Plus, thanks to devouring the history books and grimoires in my family’s library since childhood, by age thirteen I already had a solid foundation of basic knowledge firmly lodged in my head.

And of course, there’s the savings from my previous life’s basic education.

Arithmetic, basic language skills, and the clerical and financial skills drilled into me during my corporate slave days, among other things.

Putting all that to full use in the written exams, I should have scored perfect or near-perfect marks at least in subjects considered general education for knights and nobles: Kingdom History, Magic Studies, Language Arts, and Arithmetic.

At the very least, I could confidently say I hadn’t made any blunders that would land me in the lowest class.

โ€œGerald, I’m exhaustedโ€ฆโ€

Meanwhile, Twina seemed utterly drained, perhaps because this sort of event(?) was a first for her.

She slumped like a wilted flower, leaning her weight onto me as I sat beside her.

โ€œWh-!? Lord Gerald, I’m exhausted too!โ€

โ€œCut it out, both of you! Stop being so clingy! Get off me!โ€

Seeing Twina’s state, I gently pushed away Nora, who’d sat next to me and pressed close. Then, taking advantage of the commotion, I firmly pushed Twina’s cheek away as she tried to rest her head on my lap.

Or rather, the cold stares from the students passing through the plaza, like they were screaming โ€˜You happy people should just explode!โ€™, were stabbing into me like needles.

Hey, cut it out! I told you I don’t want to stand outโ€ฆ!

โ€œGuh, nuhโ€ฆ I’m sleepy! Give me your lap!โ€

โ€œShut up! If you wanna sleep, go sprawl out in the plaza!โ€

โ€œNuuโ€ฆ Haven’t you been treating me pretty badly lately?โ€

My perfectly valid point made Twina look dejected, but honestly, it’s all because of your usual behavior.

โ€ฆWell, to be honest.

As a guy right in the middle of puberty, having a girl’s head on my lap isโ€ฆ problematic in more ways than one.

But I can’t say that out loud, or Twina’ll just get cocky.

Sighโ€ฆ I won’t get a moment’s peace until the next physical examโ€ฆ
