Episode 2 – Madness

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

Kanadeโ€™s remark caused the classmates, who had been buzzing with excitement all day over the arrival of the beautiful new transfer student, to fall silent in an instant.

The fact that all eyes were now on me made me feel a little queasy.

To be specific, I felt like I was going to throw up.

Kanade, you didnโ€™t have to say something like that in front of everyone, did you?

Iโ€™m a total loner, acknowledged by everyone, you know?

โ€œHey! Hey! Letโ€™s go home soon! A-kun!โ€

Completely oblivious to my gloom, Kanade was still in high spirits as usual.

โ€œI-I-Ichinose-san! Just a secโ€ฆโ€

โ€œHuh? What?โ€

A boy from our class called out to Kanade, who was still in that giddy mood.

โ€œโ€ฆUm, Hagiwara-kun, was it? Do you two know each other?โ€

That classmateโ€ฆ or rather, the handsome, outgoing Yoshida-kunโ€”he sure knew my name well.

Even though weโ€™re in the same class, I donโ€™t think Iโ€™ve ever actually spoken to him before.

โ€œYoshihira-kun, yeah. Thatโ€™s right.โ€

โ€ฆIf Iโ€™d gotten his name wrong, that wouldโ€™ve been a real problem.

โ€œOh, really? Whatโ€™s your relationship?โ€

โ€œHmmโ€ฆ If you ask me what our relationship is, it might take quite a while to explain.โ€

โ€œIโ€™d love to hear it.โ€

โ€ฆReally?

It looked like he was just pressing her for an answer, given Kanadeโ€™s attitude.

โ€œReally? Well thenโ€ฆ Ah, but Iโ€™ll try to keep it brief.โ€

Why does she feel the need to keep it brief?

โ€œI was told I had a terminal illness when I was in elementary school.โ€

The classroom buzzed with murmurs.

โ€œAnd, well, A-kun is my childhood friend. He came to visit me almost every week and encouraged me countless times when I was suffering and feeling down.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆEncouraged, huh.

โ€œSo, once I get back to Japan, I want to spend time with A-kun first. Iโ€™m sorry.โ€

After Kanadeโ€™s explanation, a few of her classmates seemed to give up.

โ€œI see. In that case, I can definitely understand why youโ€™d want to prioritize spending time with him.โ€

It seemed like Kippei had smiled and backed down.

โ€œSo, how about we all hang out together, including Hagiwara-kun?โ€

No, it seems Kippei-kun hadnโ€™t backed down after all.

โ€œI see. Thatโ€™s actually a pretty good idea.โ€

โ€œRight?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆIโ€™m sorry, but since youโ€™re not backing downโ€ฆ

โ€œBut, sorry. Iโ€™ll pass today.โ€

You guys, canโ€™t you respect my wishes just a little?

Even though Iโ€™m just Kanadeโ€™s stand-in, I donโ€™t recall ever agreeing to hang out with my classmatesโ€ฆ or even with Kanade, for that matter. Yet the conversation keeps moving forward on its own, and itโ€™s just getting more and more frustrating.

โ€œAlright, A-kun. Letโ€™s go.โ€

โ€œWhoaโ€ฆโ€

Leaving my stunned classmates behind, Kanade took my hand and started walking.

โ€ฆIt had been a few hours since Iโ€™d reunited with Kanade, whoโ€™d arrived this morning as a transfer student.

Honestly, until this very moment, it hadnโ€™t really sunk in that Iโ€™d actually been reunited with her.

But now, with her pulling my handโ€ฆ forcing our hands together, I could feel the warmth of her palm.

โ€œโ€ฆSheโ€™s alive.โ€

I muttered.

โ€œHaha. Did you think I was dead?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆHehe.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆYeah.โ€

โ€œHahaha.โ€

Kanade, walking ahead of me, was laughing.

โ€œRight?โ€

Kanade turned to look at me and smiled mischievously.

As always, I was walking along, led by Kanadeโ€™s hand.

โ€œโ€ฆWas it okay?โ€

As we approached the shoe rack, I decided to ask Kanade.

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆTurning down everyoneโ€™s invitations.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

Her answer was immediate.

โ€œWell, ideally, Iโ€™d have liked to get to know my classmates better since weโ€™ll be living together for about a year, but itโ€™s a matter of priorities.โ€

โ€œPriorities?โ€

โ€œExactly. When Yoshihira-kun and others invited me out to play, I wondered what to do, so I thought about it calmly.โ€

โ€œAbout what?โ€

โ€œWhether to get closer to my classmates or hang out with you.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œRight now, hanging out with you is more important to me than getting to know my classmates better.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆI see.โ€

I looked down. I felt a little embarrassed.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆBut doesnโ€™t that mean itโ€™s not a valid reason to turn down Yoshihiraโ€™s invitation?โ€

โ€œBut Akkun, you didnโ€™t want to hang out with classmates, didnโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œI never actually said that out loud, though.โ€

โ€œBut you thought it, didnโ€™t you?โ€

It was true. I hadnโ€™t said it, but I did hate hanging out with my classmates.

I thought spending a few hours with people I didnโ€™t get along with was nothing short of torture.

But how did Kanade figure that out?

โ€œI can tell just by looking at your face.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆIโ€™m no match for Kanade.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆI havenโ€™t even said I want to hang out with you yet.โ€

โ€œHahaha. Thatโ€™s out of the question. No compromises.โ€

โ€œI see.โ€

โ€œOur relationship has always been like this, hasnโ€™t it? I push my way through, and you reluctantly go along with it. So this time, just go along with my pushiness, even if you donโ€™t want to.โ€

Come to think of it, I guess our relationship has always been like this.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆIโ€™m really looking forward to it. Itโ€™s been a while since Iโ€™ve been to Japan. I want to go to all sorts of places.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œJust the two of us, Akkun.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆWell, since today is also a celebration of her recovery, maybe itโ€™s not so bad to let her lead me around again.

โ€œAkkun! Where should we go now!? The beach. The mountains. Karaoke or a movie might be nice, too!โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆYeah, youโ€™re right.โ€

โ€œYeah. Yeah! Ah, seriously, there are just too many places I want to go! I wish time would just stop forever!โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆYeah, youโ€™re right.โ€

โ€œYeah! โ€ฆโ€ฆWell then, Akkun, for nowโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œLend me your phone.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHuh?โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆDid I hear that wrong?

โ€œAkkun, lend me your phone.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆKanadeโ€™s eyes, which had been full of hope just a moment ago, now seemed to lack any sparkle.

โ€œHuh? Why?โ€

โ€œWhy, you askโ€ฆโ€ฆ Ugh. Itโ€™s so we can exchange contact info!โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆOh. Oh, I see.

โ€œWait, if itโ€™s just to exchange contact info, do I really need to lend you my phone?โ€

Once I calmed down, I couldnโ€™t accept that at all.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHuh? What? Do you have some guilty secret thatโ€™s stopping you from lending me your phone?โ€

โ€œYeah. I do. Itโ€™s a smartphone, you know? Itโ€™s full of personal information.โ€

Itโ€™s only natural that everyone has at least one piece of embarrassing information on there.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHmm. I see. Guess thatโ€™s a no, then.โ€

Kanade backed down surprisingly easily.

Given how easily she backed down and the tone of her voice, did she actually press me to lend her my phone expecting to be turned down?

โ€œAlright. So, A-kunโ€ฆโ€

โ€œHm?โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s hang out at your place today.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆEh?โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s hang out at your place today.โ€

โ€œButโ€ฆโ€

โ€œLetโ€™s hang out at your place today.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆAlright.โ€

Where did that touching atmosphere from a moment ago go?

โ€œYay. So itโ€™s settled then.โ€

Kanade started skipping happily.
