Episode 28 – Simulated experience

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

A few hours into studying with Kanade, just as it had grown completely dark outside, I stood up to turn on the light in the room.

โ€œThanks.โ€

โ€œNo problem.โ€

At first, Kanade couldnโ€™t concentrate on her studies at all, but for the past little while, sheโ€™d been focusing on her work without a single word of small talk.

โ€œKanade, youโ€™ve been really focused lately.โ€

โ€œHmm? Hmm.โ€

I was praising her intense concentration, but her response was just a half-hearted grunt.

It seemed Kanade had already completely forgotten about me.

โ€ฆCome to think of it, Kanade has always been a highly focused person.

Whenever she came over to my house to play party games, sheโ€™d get more absorbed in the manga on my bookshelf than in the game itself. I even remember a time when it was her turn in Sugoroku, but she just kept reading manga and wouldnโ€™t roll the dice at all.

โ€œKanade, should we stop the game and focus on the manga?โ€

โ€œHuh? Why?โ€

Seeing her like that, I tried to get her to focus on the mangaโ€ฆ but she had no idea what I was thinking, and in the end, sheโ€™d play the game at the same time, leaving us in limbo. Iโ€™ve lost count of how many times that happened.

โ€œโ€ฆWell, she seems to be focused on one thing this time.โ€

If thatโ€™s the case, it probably wonโ€™t end up in limbo like those previous game sessions.

With her high level of concentration, Kanade might just shoot up to a high ranking in one go.

โ€œโ€ฆHmm.โ€

After studying together for another hour or so, Kanade began stretching her arms to loosen up her stiff body.

โ€œItโ€™s been quite a while, hasnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œHuh? Oh, youโ€™re right.โ€

Kanade looked at the clock and seemed a little surprised.

โ€œWow, itโ€™s been a while since Iโ€™ve been able to concentrate on studying this much.โ€

Kanade said with great satisfaction.

โ€œDonโ€™t you usually study this much?โ€

โ€œYeah. โ€ฆThere are just too many distractions, hehe.โ€

Kanade scratched her head.

โ€œHuh, did you have that many hobbies?โ€

โ€œNah, I only do one thing at home, you know? Itโ€™s justโ€ฆ Iโ€™m really into that one thing.โ€

โ€œWhat do you do?โ€

โ€œHehe. I canโ€™t tell you something that embarrassing.โ€

Kanade blushed and wore a dreamy expression.

โ€ฆI realized right then that this wasnโ€™t a topic I should delve too deeply into.

โ€œI think Mom and the others will be back soon.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€

โ€œYeah. I think sheโ€™ll make dinner when they get back. Do you want to stay and eat too?โ€

โ€œYay! Yeah, Iโ€™ll stay and eat!โ€

Kanade smiled happily, took a short break, and then got back to studying.

โ€ฆShe really has incredible concentration.

โ€œWeโ€™re home!โ€

I heard my momโ€™s voice from the entrance.

โ€œOh my, is Kanade here again today?โ€

โ€œYeees! Thanks for having me!โ€

Kanade replied in a loud voice so her mother, standing at the entrance, could hear her.

After the sound of footsteps shuffling, my mother came into my room.

โ€œMom, I always tell you to knock before opening the door.โ€

โ€œGood evening, Kanade.โ€

โ€œGood evening, Auntie.โ€

โ€œYou look so cute today. Oh, do you want to stay for dinner?โ€

โ€œYes!โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆI was ignored as if I werenโ€™t even there. Thatโ€™s cruel.

If you ignore a teenage boy, heโ€™ll just go through a rebellious phase, you know?

โ€œWell then, Iโ€™ll go make dinner, so wait here a moment.โ€

โ€œOh, Auntie. Iโ€™ll help too!โ€

โ€œOh my. Is that okay? Iโ€™m so happy!โ€

My mother seemed genuinely delighted.

Come to think of it, she once told me that she had actually wanted a daughter more than a son.

As I recalled that remarkโ€ฆ

Just as Iโ€™d thought back then, I felt that she really shouldnโ€™t have said something like that in front of her son. But I also realized that, just as she was happy with Kanadeโ€™s reaction now, she must have wanted to try preparing dinner together with a daughter.

โ€ฆI doubt she ever imagined that, even after turning forty, sheโ€™d get to live out a version of that dream.

โ€œIโ€™ll help too.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s okay. You just study, A-kun.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆButโ€”โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re going to get first place in your class, arenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€ฆMy eyes widened.

Lately, Kanade has been trying to stop me from studying abroad at every turn.

So I was convinced she resented the fact that I was going to get first place in the academic test.

โ€œYeah. Got it.โ€

So I never expectedโ€ฆ that sheโ€™d actually give me a push in the right direction.

โ€œHehe. Well then, Akkun. Good luck.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆYeah.โ€

Watching Kanade and Mom leave my room, I went back to focusing on my studies.
