Episode 29 – Outer Moat

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

It had been about an hour since Iโ€™d started studying alone when Kanade and my mom called me to say dinner was ready.

โ€œSo, you know, what do you think Atsushi said at that moment?โ€

โ€œHuh? What did he say?โ€

โ€œWell, you seeโ€ฆ โ€˜Shut up, you idiot.โ€™ He started throwing a tantrum, calling me an idiot, just like a little kid.โ€

โ€œAww, thatโ€™s cute.โ€

When I went into the living room, Kanade and Mom were chatting away, looking very close.

โ€œโ€ฆDo you think heโ€™s cute?โ€

โ€œYes. Everything Atsushi does is cute.โ€

โ€œOh myโ€ฆโ€

Watching the two of them get along so well, I realized there was a tiny spark of jealousy lurking deep in my heart.

โ€ฆI shouldnโ€™t feel jealous of Kanade, who stopped studying to cook for me, or of my mom, who works day and night and does housework all for my sake.

โ€œโ€ฆOh, Atsushi. What are you doing just standing there by the door, spacing out?โ€

โ€œThanks for everything.โ€

โ€œOh myโ€ฆโ€

I thanked her honestly, but Mom looked a little flustered.

Apparently, Dadโ€™s work was going to run a little late today, so heโ€™d sent a message to Momโ€™s phone asking us to go ahead and eat dinner.

โ€œWell then, letโ€™s eat.โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s eat.โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s eat!โ€

We gathered around the table and began our dinner.

โ€œAre you both studying hard for your tests?โ€

โ€œOf course.โ€

โ€œYes. A-kun has been helping me with my studies.โ€

โ€œI see. Atsushi, youโ€™ve gotten to the point where you can teach others now, havenโ€™t youโ€ฆโ€

โ€œIโ€™ve been getting first place on the academic tests since my first year of middle school, you know?โ€

For over three years, Iโ€™d consistently been at the top of my class.

Teaching others was a piece of cake.

โ€œNo, I mean in terms of communication skills.โ€

My optimistic thinking was cut right in half by my mother.

But, I see.

So, the thing my mom was worried aboutโ€”whether I could teach othersโ€”wasnโ€™t my academic ability, but my communication skills.

Thatโ€™s pretty rude of me.

โ€œMom, Iโ€™m sorry. Youโ€™re right, I donโ€™t think I could teach anyone.โ€

Really, failing to live up to my momโ€™s expectationsโ€”what a rude guy I am.

โ€œYou give up too easily.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s one of your good points, Akkun.โ€

โ€œBut from a parentโ€™s perspective, I just wish my son would make a few more friends.โ€

โ€œHaving few friends is one of your good points too, isnโ€™t it?โ€

Kana seems to be unusually supportive of me today.

Usually, sheโ€™s not thisโ€ฆ supportive, is she?

โ€œB-but still, Kanade. Youโ€™ve been eating dinner at our place all the time latelyโ€”arenโ€™t your parents worried?โ€

My mom seemed to ask it without a second thought, but after she said it, she added, sounding a little flustered.

โ€œNo, itโ€™s not that I donโ€™t like you hanging out at our place all the time. On the contrary, Iโ€™m really grateful that youโ€™re getting along with Atsushi, who doesnโ€™t have many friends. Seriously.โ€

My mom really emphasized the โ€œseriouslyโ€ part.

โ€œButโ€ฆ thatโ€™s just from our perspective. I was wondering how your parents feel about it.โ€

In other words, she was asking what Kanadeโ€™s parents thought about her hanging out at our house all the time.

Wellโ€ฆ itโ€™s definitely not going to happen, but if I were to hang out at Kanadeโ€™s house all the time, Mom would probably tell me not to take advantage of her parentsโ€™ kindness.

Constantly taking advantage of their kindness ends up being a strain on both the recipient and the giver, and I guess Mom just doesnโ€™t like that.

โ€œAuntie. Iโ€™m sorry for always bothering you.โ€

โ€œNo, Iโ€™m the one whoโ€™s sorry. You really donโ€™t need to apologizeโ€ฆโ€

โ€œBut donโ€™t worry. My parents actually seem happy that Iโ€™m going to your house.โ€

โ€œOh, really?โ€

โ€œYes. โ€ฆWhen I first moved to France, I didnโ€™t make many friends.โ€

I didnโ€™t know that.

โ€œSo, partly because of my illness, I was feeling pretty downโ€ฆ but lately, I seem to be looking more cheerful, and she seems really happy about it.โ€

โ€ฆKanadeโ€™s smile was dazzling.

โ€œI see. Well, thatโ€™s good to hear.โ€

My mother smiled happily too.

โ€œWell then, weโ€™d better make Atsushi take responsibility soon.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆA cold sweat ran down my spine.

What on earth was Mom talking about?

โ€œOh? Arenโ€™t you two dating?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

Kanade answered immediately.

โ€œWeโ€™re not dating yet!โ€

โ€œI see. So youโ€™re not dating yet.โ€

Todayโ€™s miso soup tastes a bit stronger than usualโ€”itโ€™s actually pretty good.

โ€œAtsushi, Iโ€™m all set over here.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t laugh at jokes like that, Mom.โ€

I let out a exasperated sigh.

โ€œThatโ€™s something that depends on the other person, so you shouldnโ€™t just blurt it out like that.โ€

โ€œA-kun. Iโ€™m all set too, you know?โ€

โ€œSee, Kanadeโ€™s saying the same thing.โ€

Seriously, even as a joke, she says things that arenโ€™t funny.
