Episode 3 – Hayase Masa wants to lock it up

Iโ€™ve Been Working My Hardest as Manager of the Girlsโ€™ Track and Field Team, but Ever Since I Retired, the Team Members Have Been Coming at Me Like Crazy!?

โ€œโ€ฆIs this a dream?โ€

Back in the bathroom again.

I didn’t really need to pee, but I fled into the nearby men’s restroom and slumped down on the toilet seat.

Even Yukimura’s acting weird now.

What the hell is going on?

What does โ€œyou can wreck meโ€ even mean?

Does she mean she wants to do some insanely hard training?

Didnโ€™t she say she wasnโ€™t going to do track in college?

โ€œMitsuโ€” are you done yet?โ€

โ€œAh, yeah, yeah.โ€

Called out in a voice loud enough to reach the farthest stall, I immediately left the restroom.

When I did, Yukimuraโ€”back to her usual sharp-featured selfโ€”looked a little annoyed.

โ€œCome on, youโ€™re late. The coaches are waiting.โ€

โ€œSorry, sorry. My stomach hurt.โ€

โ€œHuh? No way, are you okay?โ€

โ€œI-I said Iโ€™m fine.โ€

โ€œBut Mitsuru, youโ€™re the one who never went to the bathroom even during practice. Saying your stomach hurts is serious. Hey, do you want me to carry you on my back?โ€

โ€œN-no, thatโ€™s not necessary. Letโ€™s just hurry to the meeting spot.โ€

I walked ahead as if fleeing from Yukimura, but she caught up to me right away and kept talking to me with a worried look on her face.

โ€œAre you okay? You shouldn’t push yourself.โ€

โ€œI’m not pushing myself.โ€

โ€œIf something happens to Mitsuruโ€ฆ Hey, are you really okay?โ€

โ€œI’m fine. I’m just tired from talking to the staff about the paperwork and stuff.โ€

โ€œI see. Hey, who was that staff member?โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

โ€œWho was it? Come on, what kind of woman made Mitsuru act like that?โ€

โ€œW-wait, wait, Yukimura! The staff member is an old guy, and Iโ€™m totally fine!โ€

Yukimura looked like she was about to bolt toward the staff desk, so I hurriedly stopped her.

โ€œI-is that so? So youโ€™re really okay?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve been saying that the whole time. Oh, look, the teachers are over there.โ€

As we left the stadium, I spotted the teacher and Shiratori near the main entrance.

โ€œHey, Sensei!โ€

โ€œOh, Senba.โ€

The advisor who waved back at us was Aizawa Honoka.

She was a young woman in her third year out of college, a demure beauty.

However, her personality was more masculine than Yukimuraโ€™s.

Or rather, inside, she was an old man.

โ€œOh, Yukimuraโ€™s here too? You two werenโ€™t getting cozy, were you?โ€

โ€œTeacher, please donโ€™t say things like that at the competition venue.โ€

โ€œHahaha, Senba, youโ€™re as straight-laced as ever.โ€

Iโ€™m used to this kind of banter with a teacher whoโ€™s always cracking dirty jokes.

But I really wish sheโ€™d stop right now.

Because Shiratori is glaring at me from behind you with eyes like a hitman.

โ€œMitchii, are you lying to me? Were you sneaking around with Mai?โ€

โ€œN-no, no. We just ran into each other on the way back.โ€

โ€œOh, really? Donโ€™t scare me like that.โ€

Why would you be surprised if Iโ€™m with Yukimura?

I canโ€™t say that, though.

Itโ€™s a bit of a landmine.

โ€œOh, come to think of it, whereโ€™s Masa?โ€

As Yukimura looked around, the teacher said, โ€œCome to think of it, sheโ€™s not here.โ€

She didnโ€™t seem worried; she said it as if it were nothing out of the ordinary.

โ€œTeacher, werenโ€™t you with her?โ€

โ€œNo, I was until partway here. But she went to the bathroom, so I left her behind.โ€

โ€œSeriously, youโ€™re unfit to be a chaperone if youโ€™re going to do stuff like that.โ€

โ€œHaha, sheโ€™s not a baby, so sheโ€™ll be fine.โ€

โ€œBut weโ€™re staying at a hotel tonight. We have to check in, too.โ€

โ€œOh, thatโ€™s right. Alright, Senba, go find Hayase for me.โ€

โ€œMe?โ€

โ€œYou know Hayaseโ€™s habits better than I do, donโ€™t you? Come on, go find her.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆIโ€™ll be right back.โ€

With that, I dashed back into the stadium.

It wasnโ€™t that I was in such a hurry.

It was just that Yukimura had been muttering behind me the whole time, โ€œDo you prefer Masaya over me?โ€ in a voice so dark it could kill.

And then there was Shiratori.

She was staring at me intently, intently, intentlyโ€”without blinking once.

This is seriously scaryโ€ฆ Someone, help me!

โ€œHaa, haaโ€ฆ um, ah, there she is, there she is.โ€

Looking around from high up in the stands, I spotted a girl with brown hair in a spot where the long jump area was clearly visible.

โ€œHey, Hayase, what are you doing?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆSen-chan?โ€

Hayase Mas, who turned around at my voice, was what youโ€™d call a โ€œgal.โ€

She had brown hair, wore makeup, and was quite the free spirit.

It was no big deal for her to wander around alone like this, but she wasnโ€™t the kind of girl who was easyโ€”she had a strong core, and out of the three of them, she was the one I clashed with the least.

By the way, sheโ€™s the only one who calls me โ€œSen-chan.โ€

Apparently, itโ€™s because my real name is Mitsuru Senba.

โ€œWhatโ€™s up? Why are you just spacing out here? Everyoneโ€™s waiting.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆI donโ€™t knowโ€ฆ I just feel like itโ€™s all over.โ€

โ€œYou were getting all sentimental? Thatโ€™s not like you, Hayase.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re the one whoโ€™s being sentimental. You used to get mad whenever I was late to practice.โ€

โ€œWell, everyoneโ€™s retiring today. My role as the โ€˜demon managerโ€™โ€”a title that never really suited meโ€”is finally over.โ€

โ€œHuh. I see. So, itโ€™s really over.โ€

Leaning against the railing, Hayase stared at the empty long jump pit.

โ€œDo you have any lingering feelings about track and field?โ€

โ€œNope. I even set a personal best at the end. I feel totally at peace.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t look it. Isnโ€™t there something you actually regret?โ€

โ€œAs expected of Sen-chan, you really know me well.โ€

โ€œI am the manager, after all.โ€

โ€œHehe, whatโ€™s that supposed to mean?โ€

โ€œSo, whatโ€™s on your mind?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ll listen?โ€

โ€œWell, since weโ€™re hereโ€ฆโ€

โ€œThanks. Hey, do you remember the day you came over to my house?โ€

โ€œOh, yeah, that was the day you had a fever, right?โ€

โ€œI was so happy that day. But you left right away, didnโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œWell, you fell asleep right away.โ€

โ€œYeah, that. I wish I hadnโ€™t fallen asleep thenโ€”I wanted to lock Sen-chan in my room.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆLock me in?โ€

โ€œAlso, do you remember when we were alone together in the gym storage room?โ€

โ€œUm, I think it was a rainy day, and we were splitting up to tidy up different areas, right?โ€

โ€œExactly. Even then, I kept thinking, โ€˜Maybe I shouldโ€™ve just knocked him out and pinned him down.โ€™โ€

โ€œโ€ฆKnocked me out?โ€

What on earth is she talking about?

Lock him up, knock him outโ€ฆ it sounds like she is planning to attack someoneโ€ฆ

โ€œSen-chan.โ€

โ€œY-yes?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re staying at a hotel tonight, right?โ€

โ€œAh, yeah. Weโ€™re taking the train tomorrow morning.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re in a single room, right, Sen-chan?โ€

โ€œW-well, yeah. I mean, we canโ€™t exactly share a room, can we?โ€

โ€œHmm.โ€

As if sheโ€™d come to her own conclusion, Hayase nodded a few times beforeโ€ฆ

โ€ฆgazing up at the sky, her light hair blowing in the breeze, she murmured.

โ€œMaybe this time, Iโ€™ll finally have a chance to lock you in.โ€
