The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

โ€œAtsushi, it’s time to go.โ€

It was the Saturday after exams had ended.

I was studying hard in my room as usual when my mom called out to me in a loud voice from the living room downstairs.

โ€œOkay.โ€

I closed my textbook and let out a sigh.

I really wanted to study a little longer, but since it was time to go, there was nothing I could do.

โ€œYouโ€™re late.โ€

โ€œSorry, sorry.โ€

When I went downstairs, my mom, who had already finished getting ready, scolded me.

Apologizing, we left the house and headed toward the car where my dad was waiting.

The car was already running, and my dad was tapping away on his smartphone.

โ€œWell then, honey. Take care of us.โ€

โ€œYeah. Got it.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry even though you always have to work late.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry about it. After all, Iโ€™m your father.โ€

Sitting in the back seat of the car as it pulled away, I silently thanked my father once more for his warm smile and gazed blankly out the window at the passing scenery.

โ€œMan, itโ€™s been a while, hasnโ€™t it?โ€

My father said, sounding somewhat amused as he drove.

โ€œGetting invited over to the Ichinose familyโ€™s house like this. We used to do that quite a bit when Atsushi was little.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s true. We were neighbors back then, after all.โ€

The place the Hagiwara family was heading to today was the Ichinose household, which I had visited the other day.

The other day, I spent a whole day taking care of Kanade, who had caught a coldโ€ฆ After Kanadeโ€™s mother came home, she thanked me for looking after her and said, โ€œPlease come visit us as a family sometime,โ€ and thatโ€™s how this plan came about.

However, when I got home and explained the situation to my parentsโ€ฆ they didnโ€™t immediately agree to Kanadeโ€™s motherโ€™s invitation.

โ€œYouโ€ฆ skipped school to take care of Kanadeโ€ฆ?โ€

The first reaction my parents showed was confusion.

After that, I explained how things had unfolded and told them it was all to extend my study period for the test.

โ€œIsnโ€™t that a little too sneakyโ€ฆ?โ€

As a result, my parents became even more confused.

Why on earthโ€ฆ?

Well, anyway, after my parents had spent a while puzzling over my actions on the day of the test, I decided to ask them again about visiting the Ichinose family.

โ€œOf course weโ€™ll go.โ€

โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you just say so from the start?โ€ I thought to myself, for once with all my heart.

โ€œโ€ฆWhen you guys were little, we used to do this almost every week, you know?โ€

My father said.

โ€œReally?โ€

To be honest, I donโ€™t really remember it.

โ€œEver since you guys were little, both we and they were so busy with work. Luckily, since we were neighbors, weโ€™d take turns watching each otherโ€™s kids. โ€ฆIn this day and age, some people might make a fuss and call it child abuse.โ€

My father gave a wry smile.

โ€œI guess you could call it give and take. โ€ฆThings were tougher back then than they are now, but I think we managed in part because there were people in similar situations nearby who helped each other out.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆI see.โ€

โ€œYeah. โ€ฆSo I never imagined that our relationship would end up severed like that.โ€

The car fell silentโ€ฆ only the sound of the engine echoed.

โ€œDo you remember, Atsushi?โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆThe conversation we had in the car after you went to visit Kanade for the first time after she was hospitalized.โ€

โ€ฆThe conversation on the way home that day, after Iโ€™d seen Kanadeโ€”emaciated, her beautiful black hair gone.

โ€œโ€ฆCome to think of it, the situation was just like it is now. Without a second thought, we sat in the back seat and spoke in voices loud enough for you to hear, pitying Kanadeโ€™s condition.โ€

โ€ฆThereโ€™s no way I could forget that.

โ€œโ€˜Poor thing.โ€™ You were angry at Mom for saying that, werenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorryโ€ฆโ€

Even now, looking back on itโ€ฆ it was nothing more than me taking my frustration out on you.

โ€œNo, no. Iโ€™m not angry. โ€ฆItโ€™s just that, ever since then, youโ€™ve beenโ€ฆโ€

He started to say something, then laughed.

โ€œSorry. I got a little sentimental there.โ€

โ€œYou really did. And here weโ€™re about to see Ichinose san for the first time in ages.โ€

Mom was annoyed.

โ€œSpeaking of which, Atsushi, ever since you went to take care of Kanade at her house, she hasnโ€™t come over here even once. Did something happen?โ€

I was laughing at my parentsโ€™ conversation when my mother turned around and suddenly asked me that.

Just as my mother said, Kanade hadnโ€™t actually stopped by our house for the past few days.

โ€œShe used to come almost every day before that. โ€ฆDid you two have a fight or something?โ€

โ€œA fight? When they were getting along so well?โ€

โ€œGive me a break. Like I am be fighting with the girl from the house weโ€™re about to visit? Thatโ€™d just make the atmosphere even more awkward.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆHow rude.โ€

Me and Kanade, fighting?

What a stupid question to ask.

โ€œWe didnโ€™t fight. Not even a little bit.โ€

I snorted derisively.

โ€œThen why did Kanade stop coming over?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆHmm. Itโ€™s simple.โ€

I smiled defiantly.

โ€œActually, we were competing in the final exams.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

I noddedโ€ฆ

โ€œAnd I crushed Kanade completely.โ€

I grinned.

Thanks to a special exception for sick students, we took the test the next day and received our scores from our homeroom teacher in the faculty room a week later than the rest of the class.

โ€ฆThe look on Kanadeโ€™s face at that momentโ€”she was practically in tearsโ€”was pretty thrilling, if I do say so myself.

โ€œโ€ฆHaa. And youโ€™re calling that a fight?โ€

My mother was holding her head in her hands.
