Episode 8 – I’d like to give up my seat to the person next to me

Iโ€™ve Been Working My Hardest as Manager of the Girlsโ€™ Track and Field Team, but Ever Since I Retired, the Team Members Have Been Coming at Me Like Crazy!?

โ™ค

About five minutes had passed since the taxi carrying us had started moving.

During that time, Iโ€™d been worried about what the Shiratoris might do to us, but surprisingly, all three of them were quiet, each seeming to be lost in their own thoughts.

Well, Shiratori had been running until just a moment ago, so she must be tired.

Yukimura isnโ€™t really the chatty type, either.

Hayase is quite talkative on LINE or the phone, but when talking face-to-face, sheโ€™s surprisingly reserved.

The sudden change in the three of them earlier might just have been because they were high on the excitement of the Inter-High being over.

No, that must be it.

I want to believe thatโ€™s the case.

โ€œHey, Mitsuru.โ€

As if to shatter my wish, Yukimura broke the silence.

โ€œWh-what?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s okay if you move closer to me.โ€

โ€œN-no, itโ€™s fine. You guys must be more tired.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t have a match today. Or are you worried about Moe?โ€

Yukimura was right.

Ever since we got in the taxi, Shiratori has been staring right at me.

Sheโ€™s been glaring at me in the back seat the whole timeโ€”so much so that Iโ€™m worried her neck might start to hurt.

โ€œโ€ฆWell, if sheโ€™s glaring at me that muchโ€ฆโ€

โ€œFufu, I wonder why sheโ€™s glaring at you? Could it be that something happened between you and Moe, Mitsuru?โ€

Yukimuraโ€™s voice grew a little somber.

At that very moment, I felt something cold brush against my side.

โ€œWh-what are you talking about?โ€

โ€œAh, that blank look on your face means somethingโ€™s up. Hey, donโ€™t tell meโ€ฆโ€

โ€œNo, no, no! Thereโ€™s no way anythingโ€™s going on!โ€

I felt whatever had been touching my side press against me harder, so I hurriedly denied it, and it gently moved away from my body.

โ€œOh, thatโ€™s a relief.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆHey, that thing you were pressing against me just nowโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWhat are you talking about?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆNever mind.โ€

I was curious, but I held back because I felt Yukimura would really get angry if I asked any more.

I feel like it was something sharpโ€ฆ but no, that mustโ€™ve been my imagination.

โ€œBut then, why has Moe been staring at Mitsuru the whole time?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆSheโ€™s serious, so sheโ€™s probably keeping an eye on me to make sure I donโ€™t make a move on you or Hayase.โ€

โ€œHuh. Youโ€™re not going to make a move?โ€

โ€œW-what, would I? Besides, our club has a no-dating policy, right?โ€

โ€œBut that was supposed to be until the Inter-High was over, wasnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆItโ€™s not over yet, is it?โ€

Itโ€™s a technicality, but the Nationals certainly arenโ€™t over yet.

According to the schedule, tomorrow is the final day.

Itโ€™s just that none of our three players are competing.

Of course, when I first set the no-dating rule, I meant it would last until each personโ€™s final match was over.

โ€œโ€ฆI see. Mitsuru has a point there. So, does that mean no dating until tomorrow?โ€

โ€œWell, I guess so. So you guys better make sure to follow the rules properly.โ€

For some reason, it was Shirotori in the passenger seatโ€”not Yukimuraโ€”who seemed flustered by that.

Her sharp gaze from earlier was nowhere to be seen; her eyes were darting around, and she was opening and closing her mouth.

โ€ฆI see. It worked.

I guess I can rest easy for today, at least.

โ€œHey, hey, Sen-chan.โ€

Just as I was breathing a sigh of relief, this time from behind.

Hayase called out to me, tugging on my tracksuit.

โ€œWh-what is it?โ€

โ€œLocked up doesnโ€™t count as romance, right?โ€

Whatโ€™s she suddenly talking about?

โ€ฆNo, wait, sheโ€™s probably talking about me.

โ€œโ€ฆIt depends on what you want to lock up.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€

โ€œThink about it. For example, if you wanted to lock up someone you liked, wouldnโ€™t that be because you like them?โ€

โ€œLikeโ€ฆ yeah, that makes sense.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s basically romance. So itโ€™s a no-go.โ€

To be honest, Hayase just gave a half-hearted โ€œYeah.โ€

But for some reason, Shirotori in the passenger seat looked shocked, her mouth hanging open.

โ€ฆDid you plan to lock him up?

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆAnyway, since weโ€™re staying here today on the schoolโ€™s dime, make sure you behave yourselves at the hotel.โ€

I forced the conversation to a close, and all three of them gave a half-hearted โ€œOkay.โ€

Iโ€™d like to think weโ€™re safe for now.

As for the restโ€ฆ once we get to the hotel and finish dinner, Iโ€™ll lock the door and avoid going out until morning.

Ah, how did it come to this?

I was looking forward to relaxing in the communal bath and chatting with the four of us until lights out.

โ€œMitchiiโ€

โ€œMitsuโ€

โ€œSen-chanโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

The three of them called out to me while shooting me heavy glances, so I lowered my head, making sure not to meet their eyes.
