Episode 39 – Outer Moat 2

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

โ€œUncle! Auntie! Hello!โ€

In the living room, Kanade greeted my parents with a beaming smile.

My parents, who had apparently been chatting while we were away, smiled at us.

โ€œKanade, hello.โ€

โ€œKanade, Iโ€™m sorry about my son.โ€

โ€œNo, itโ€™s me whoโ€™s sorry for getting angry over such a childish thing.โ€

Kanade bowed her head to my parents. Seeing her like that, my parents looked a little flustered.

โ€œKanade, please lift your head. Itโ€™s my sonโ€™s fault for crushing you in the test.โ€

โ€œNo. Iโ€™m actually grateful to A-kun for challenging me to a fair fight.โ€

Huh, really?

If thatโ€™s the caseโ€ฆ then why did Kanade just ask me to study with her every day?

โ€ฆโ€ฆ

Well, itโ€™s not like I mind studying with Kanade, so I guess itโ€™s fine.

โ€œSo, Iโ€™m going to keep studying hard so I can beat him on the next test!โ€

Her parents smiled at Kanadeโ€™s resolute declaration.

โ€œโ€ฆAnd actually, I made a promise with A-kun just a little while ago.โ€

โ€œA promise?โ€

โ€œYes. Iโ€™ve decided to have study sessions with A-kun for a while starting now.โ€

At Kanadeโ€™s wordsโ€ฆ

โ€œOh, thatโ€™s wonderful. Good luck, Kanade.โ€

My mom was delighted.

โ€œSoโ€ฆ I was thinking Iโ€™d be dropping by your house every day for a while.โ€

โ€ฆOh, so she was planning to let my parents know about this, after all.

My parents are hardly ever home on weekdays because of work, so I guess itโ€™d probably be fine even if she didnโ€™t tell themโ€ฆ

โ€ฆโ€ฆHuh?

Wait a minuteโ€”if my parents are hardly ever home on weekdaysโ€ฆ doesnโ€™t that mean Kanade and I will have time alone together in my room for a whileโ€ฆ?

โ€ฆโ€ฆ

โ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆ

โ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆ

Hahaha

โ€œHey, Kanade, what are you suddenly talking about?โ€

Unlike my family, who seemed to welcome the idea, Kanadeโ€™s mother cut in, scolding her.

โ€œSaying something like that out of the blueโ€ฆ wouldnโ€™t that be a bother for the Hagiwaras?โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

โ€œNo, not reallyโ€ฆโ€

โ€œItโ€™s totally fine, right?โ€

โ€œSee, sheโ€™s saying itโ€™s a bother.โ€

Kanadeโ€™s mother had a frown on her face.

โ€œNo, no. Donโ€™t cause too much trouble for the Hagiwaras.โ€

โ€œBooโ€ฆ Come on, Mom.โ€

โ€œI said no, and thatโ€™s final.โ€

Kanadeโ€™s mother continued, sounding annoyed.

โ€œSo, come over to our house every other day.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆHuh?

โ€ฆโ€ฆThereโ€™s no sparkle in Kanadeโ€™s motherโ€™s eyes?

โ€œThat way, you can study properly with A-kun every day, and I can help out too.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆEeh.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong? Are you unhappy about it?โ€

Kanade just looked down, looking dissatisfied, and didnโ€™t try to say anything.

โ€œI donโ€™t mind at all, thoughโ€ฆ?โ€

For the time being, I agreed with Kanadeโ€™s momโ€™s suggestion.

To be honest, I was a little skeptical because having Kanade come over to my house every single day would probably be a burden on her.

To begin with, letting a girl go home alone late at night is dangerous enoughโ€ฆ and if that happened every day, the burden on her would be immeasurable.

โ€ฆCome to think of it, if it gets too late for her to go home, I could just have her stay over at my place.

Hahaha.

If that were the case, going with the original plan might have meant Kanade staying over at our house every day!

โ€œSee, even A-kun is saying the same thing, isnโ€™t he?โ€

As usual, there was no sparkle in Kanadeโ€™s motherโ€™s eyes.

โ€œโ€ฆButโ€ฆโ€

โ€œKanade, do you really hate studying at this house that much?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆHmmโ€ฆโ€

โ€œKanadeโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œHonestly, if you ask me whether I like it or notโ€ฆ I donโ€™t.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€

At my question, Kanade looked down.

โ€œBecauseโ€ฆโ€

Kanade glanced over at her mother, who was flashing a commanding smile.

โ€œโ€ฆUgh. I get it. I get it.โ€

It seemed Kanade had reluctantly agreed to her motherโ€™s demand.

โ€œMom, Iโ€™m just saying this up front, but you better not do anything weird to A-kun, okay?โ€

โ€œHahaha. What do you think Iโ€™d do to A-kun?โ€

โ€œExactly. Not you, Ichinose-san. Hahaha.โ€

The mothers from both families were laughing together.

โ€ฆItโ€™s kind of a heartwarming sight.

โ€œWell then, shall we start getting dinner ready?โ€

โ€œOh, Iโ€™ll help.โ€

Kanade agreed with her motherโ€™s suggestion.

โ€œI might as well help too, since weโ€™re at it.โ€

My mother huffed and puffed as she got up from the sofa.

โ€œAlright then, you guys wait there for a little while.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€

โ€œAkkun. Iโ€™ll make you a delicious meal.โ€

โ€œThanks.โ€

Leaving the meal prep to the ladies, I sat down next to my dad.

โ€œAtsushi. Youโ€™ve got it pretty rough, donโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

No sooner had I sat down on the sofa than my dad said that to me.

Not knowing what he meant, I tilted my head.

โ€œAtsu. Iโ€™m sorry. About my family.โ€

โ€œAbout what?โ€

For some reason, Kanadeโ€™s father offered an apology.

โ€œโ€ฆIf anything tough comes up, you can always talk to us.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s right. Weโ€™re on your side.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s going on with you two?โ€

Faced with their serious expressions, I couldnโ€™t hide my confusion.

โ€œAkkunโ€ฆ Since Kanade transferred to your school, have you been caught up in anything strange?โ€

โ€œStrange, like what?โ€

โ€œWellโ€ฆ for example, have you ever suddenly felt an overwhelming wave of sleepiness?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆAh.โ€

Come to think of it, something like that did happen.

But that was probably just because I was studying too hard.

โ€œAnything elseโ€ฆ like Kanade giving you a present?โ€

โ€œHuhโ€ฆโ€

Why would he ask that?

โ€œโ€ฆOr maybe your phone battery started draining faster?โ€

โ€œIt has been draining faster, but I think itโ€™s just the battery wearing out. Haha.โ€

When I laughedโ€ฆ

โ€œโ€ฆActually, out of everyone here, youโ€™re the one with the biggest influence, arenโ€™t you, Akkun?โ€

Kanadeโ€™s father gave a wry smile, looking exasperated.ใ€€
