Episode 52 – feeling under the weather

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

After that little spat with Kanade, I couldnโ€™t bring myself to go back to sleep, so I went down to the living room.

โ€œOh, A-kun. You could have slept a little longer, you know?โ€

โ€œNope. Iโ€™m fine.โ€

โ€œHehe. I see.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆIs there anything I can help with?โ€

I asked Kanade, who was standing in the kitchen making my breakfast.

Come to think of it, I remembered that the other day, Iโ€™d suggested we split the housework to lighten her load.

โ€œNo, Iโ€™m fine. โ€ฆOh, sorry. Actually, there might be something Iโ€™d like you to do.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œHehe. Say โ€˜Thank you, Kanade, for everything.โ€™โ€

โ€œThank you, Kanade, for everything.โ€

โ€œEhehe. Ehehehehe.โ€

When I expressed my gratitude for her daily efforts, Kanade was clearly over the moon.

Hehe. It feels good to be thanked by someone, doesnโ€™t it?

From now on, whenever someone does something helpful for me, Iโ€™ll make sure to thank them properly.

Then, since Kanade told me to wait in the living room, I sat on the sofa and stared blankly at the TV.

A few minutes later, Kanade came in with breakfast, bringing a delicious aroma with her.

โ€œHere you go, Akkun.โ€

โ€œKanade, thanks as always.โ€

โ€œEhehe. Ehehehehe.โ€

Sure enough, saying thank you makes me feel good too.

โ€œWell then, Iโ€™ll dig in.โ€

โ€œEnjoy your meal.โ€

โ€œMmm. Itโ€™s delicious.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m really happy.โ€

โ€œKanade, thanks as always.โ€

โ€œEhehe. Ehehehehe.โ€

Kanade sat down next to me, wriggling her body back and forth.

โ€œBy the way, Akkunโ€ฆโ€

Kanade, looking all giddy, spoke to me in a cheerful voice.

โ€œAkkun. Are you feeling a little under the weather today?โ€

I was speechless as Kanade said this, still smiling.

โ€œHuh? Does it look like it?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

Kanade didnโ€™t let her smile falter.

โ€œWhyโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œWell, your voice is lower than usual. Youโ€™re walking slower than usual. And your smile isnโ€™t as bright as usual.โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean, โ€˜not as brightโ€™โ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œMost of all, you were tossing and turning in your sleep just a little while ago, werenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€ฆIs that so?

โ€œโ€ฆI wonder what happened? Iโ€™m here to listen to anything, you know?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆReally?โ€

โ€œYeah. Weโ€™re special, arenโ€™t we?โ€

โ€œI guess so.โ€

โ€ฆThatโ€™s right.

Just as I think of Kanade as special, she must think of me as special to some extent, too.

And above all, among my few friendsโ€ฆ Kanade is the person I trust the most.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆActually, Iโ€™ve been thinking about Takagaki-san.โ€

โ€œHuuuuuuuuuuum.โ€

โ€œSince yesterdayโ€ฆ yeah. Ever since I was taking pictures of the plane, Iโ€™ve been worried about her the whole timeโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWooooooooooooooow.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆKanade, Iโ€™m only telling you this because itโ€™s you.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWhat? A-kun?โ€

I swallowed hard, facing Kanade, who was radiating a mysterious intensity.

โ€œHave you heard anything about Takagaki-sanโ€™s younger brother?โ€

โ€ฆInstantly, the pressure Kanade was giving off began to fade, and eventually, her eyes widened.

โ€œโ€ฆHuh? Does A-kun have that kind of hobbyโ€ฆ?โ€

Kanadeโ€™s eyes welled up with tears as her cheeks flushed and her lips trembled.

โ€œNo way. Is that what you mean? Is that why you werenโ€™t falling for me at allโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œKanade.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆWaaah.โ€

โ€œKanade?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆY-yes!โ€

For some reason, Kanade was flustered.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆWell, Iโ€™ve been thinking about it ever since yesterdayโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆI-is that so?โ€

โ€œYeahโ€ฆโ€ฆ Maybe Takagaki-sanโ€™s younger brotherโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆGulpโ€

โ€œโ€ฆmight be suffering from an illness.โ€

It felt like Kanadeโ€™s confused expression had changed again.

โ€œWhy do you think that?โ€

Kanade asked in a gentle tone.

โ€œโ€ฆYesterday, Takagaki-san muttered something. She said she hoped heโ€™d get well soon.โ€

โ€œUh-huh.โ€

โ€œGiven the timing, it seemed to me that it must be about her brother.โ€

โ€œI see.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆIf you really think about it, doesnโ€™t it seem strange? If her brother was interested in the wrapped airplane, shouldnโ€™t he have come to the airport yesterday too, not just Takagaki-san?โ€

โ€œTrue, that way he could see the real thing and it would make for a better memory.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆRight? And thatโ€™s when it hit me.โ€

โ€œThat even if Ayakaโ€™s brother was interested in the wrapped plane, there must have been some reason he just couldnโ€™t make it there in person?โ€

I nodded.

โ€œWhen I thought about what that reason might beโ€ฆ and heard her wistful murmurโ€ฆโ€

I gave Kanade a look.

โ€œI ended up thinking of you.โ€

โ€ฆKanade was smiling.

โ€œโ€ฆYeah.โ€

โ€ฆThatโ€™s right.

Thinking about Takagaki-sanโ€™s brotherโ€™s condition, and then Iโ€ฆ

โ€ฆended up thinking of you, Kanade.

Thatโ€™s why I had that nightmare earlier.

โ€œโ€ฆI see. I understand what youโ€™re trying to say, A-kun.โ€

Kanade nodded, โ€œMm-hmm.โ€

โ€œA-kun. So, can I share my thoughts?โ€

โ€œSure.โ€

โ€œI think youโ€™re probably right. Ayaka-chanโ€™s brother is probably in the hospital or somethingโ€ฆ anyway, I donโ€™t think heโ€™s in good health.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆYeah.โ€

โ€œButโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

Kanade gently squeezed my hand.

โ€œI thinkโ€”though Iโ€™m not sureโ€”itโ€™s not as dire as you imagine.โ€

Her hand wasโ€ฆโ€ฆ warm.

โ€œI donโ€™t think heโ€™s hovering between life and death like I am.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆFor a moment, distracted by the warmth of her hand, I shook my head.

โ€œWhy do you think that?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆHmm. Well, I guess itโ€™s just a rule of thumb.โ€

โ€œA rule of thumb?โ€

Kanade tightened her grip on my hand just a little.

โ€œโ€ฆWhen a family member is in critical condition. Especially when a child is in that state. People just canโ€™t joke around anymore.โ€

โ€ฆKanade gave a wry smile.

โ€œAyaka-chan didnโ€™t seem that desperate around the time of the closing ceremony. Even yesterday. A relativeโ€ฆ That doesnโ€™t look like someone whose younger brother is about to die. That didnโ€™t.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆI see.โ€

โ€œYeah. Soโ€ฆ heโ€™s probably in the hospital, but heโ€™s not in mortal danger. Maybe itโ€™s just an injury or something.โ€

โ€ฆMaybe it was because Kanade, of all people, said it, but I felt a little calmer.
