Episode 63 – Forceful

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

Kanadeโ€™s mother led me into the living room, and I sat down on the sofa as she motioned for me to.

โ€œHehe. Just wait here for a moment.โ€

Saying that, Kanadeโ€™s mother left the living room.

A few minutes later, she reappeared holding a sheet of paper.

โ€œHere you go.โ€

Kanadeโ€™s mother placed the sheet of paper sheโ€™d brought on the table.

โ€ฆWasnโ€™t she supposed to tell me about Kanadeโ€™s condition?

With that question in mind, I looked at the paper Kanadeโ€™s mother had placed on the table.

What was written on the paperโ€ฆ looked like Kanadeโ€™s medical checkup record.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry.โ€

Kanadeโ€™s mother apologized to me.

โ€œThe other dayโ€ฆ when Kanade had a fever and you came to visit her, I made a rather cryptic remark, didnโ€™t I? Iโ€™m sure that must have made you anxious.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆYeah.โ€

Come to think of it, that did happen.

โ€œSo, I wanted to apologize for that first. Iโ€™d feel terrible if Iโ€™d left you feeling anxious and with a lingering sense of unease.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆOkay.โ€

โ€œSo, did you understand what was on that form?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry. โ€ฆIt was too complicated; I didnโ€™t really get it.โ€

โ€œHehe. I suppose so.โ€

Kanadeโ€™s mother smiled gently.

โ€œDonโ€™t worry. Kanade is perfectly healthy right now.โ€

Hearing Kanadeโ€™s motherโ€™s gentle wordsโ€ฆ I felt incredibly relieved.

โ€œIs that soโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYes. I wanted to put your mind at ease about that incident from the other day as soon as possible. Thatโ€™s why I asked you to make time for me and take a look at the checkup form.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆThank you.โ€

I bowed my head.

โ€œButโ€ฆ is it really okay to show this to me without telling Kanade?โ€

โ€œHehehehehehe.โ€

Kanadeโ€™s mother flashed a smile that was quite different from the gentle one sheโ€™d shown earlierโ€”one that seemed to hide a hint of mischief.

โ€œItโ€™s fine. Donโ€™t worry.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆWell, if you say so, Auntie.โ€

โ€œAs long as she doesnโ€™t find out, itโ€™s fine.โ€

โ€ฆI shouldnโ€™t have let my guard down.

Iโ€™ll make sure to apologize properly to Kanade later, just in case.

โ€œWell then, now that weโ€™ve cleared up your worries, Akkun, shall we get down to business?โ€

Ignoring my feelings of guilt toward Kanade, Kanadeโ€™s mother cheerfully said that.

Right now, the only reason Iโ€™m here facing Kanadeโ€™s mother is to ask about Kanadeโ€™s condition.

In other words, I have no reason to keep talking to Kanadeโ€™s motherโ€ฆ and besides, what do you mean the main topic isnโ€™t about Kanadeโ€™s condition?

โ€œHehe. Akkun, youโ€™ve fallen right into Auntieโ€™s trap, havenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆW-what are you planning to make me do?โ€

โ€ฆWell, since sheโ€™d done me a favor by letting me know Kanade was safe, I was willing to listen to her for a bit, but if she started saying anything too strange, I was planning to go back to studying in Kanadeโ€™s room.

โ€œAkkun. Do you know this book?โ€

While I was trying to figure out how to brush off Kanadeโ€™s mom, she pulled a book out of nowhere and placed it on top of Kanadeโ€™s medical checkup form.

โ€ฆThe book Kanadeโ€™s mom placed on the table wasโ€ฆ

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆI know it. I know it.โ€

It looked familiar to me, too.

โ€œI saw it on TV recentlyโ€”they were introducing it as a bestseller.โ€

The book Kanadeโ€™s mother had placed on the table was a non-fiction novel that had been the talk of the town lately.

โ€ฆApparently, itโ€™s a tear-jerking novel that depicts the life story of a daughter who was given a terminal diagnosis, as seen through her motherโ€™s eyes.

โ€œโ€ฆHuh?โ€

Wait a minuteโ€ฆ

The story of this non-fiction novelโ€ฆ it feels like something Iโ€™ve been witnessing up close latelyโ€ฆ

โ€œโ€ฆNo wayโ€ฆโ€

No wayโ€ฆ!

โ€œHehe. Thatโ€™s right. Iโ€™m the one who published this book.โ€

I was completely taken aback.

โ€œOf courseโ€ฆ itโ€™s about Kanade, who was once given a terminal diagnosis.โ€

โ€ฆS-so thatโ€™s what it was.

โ€œMy main source of income right now is giving lectures. And then there are the royalties from this book.โ€

โ€œOh, I seeโ€ฆโ€

โ€œSoโ€ฆ actually, the publisher has approached me about writing a sequel to this book.โ€

โ€œA, a sequel?โ€

โ€œYes. You see, with nonfiction books like this that depict the life story of someone whoโ€™s been given a terminal diagnosis, ultimatelyโ€ฆ well, to put it bluntly, the main character ends up passing away, right? But in my case, Iโ€™m still living a healthy life. So they figured, โ€˜If thatโ€™s the case, I can write a sequel, right?โ€™ Thatโ€™s the idea.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s true, I supposeโ€ฆโ€

โ€ฆI still felt a little uneasy about it.

Even when I heard earlier that Kanade was holding lecturesโ€ฆ I didnโ€™t feel very good about the way her life story was being treated as mere entertainment.

However, I did think that if, through Kanadeโ€™s life story, people like the Kanade of the pastโ€”or people similar to her parentsโ€”could find the strength to carry onโ€ฆ then maybe that was okay after all.

But this time, itโ€™s nothing more than flaunting Kanadeโ€™s life story to the general public.

At this rate, isnโ€™t Kanade just like an animal in a zoo cage?

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHehe. Itโ€™s okayโ€”itโ€™s what Kanade wanted.โ€

Apparently, Kanadeโ€™s mother had noticed the complicated look on my face and figured it out.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆIs that really true?โ€

โ€œOf course. She wanted lots of people to see it.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œThe way she lived her life.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œAnd youโ€”the one who supported her when she was on the brink of death.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆHuh?โ€

Huh?

โ€œA-Auntie. Does that bookโ€ฆ maybe mention me, too?โ€

โ€œYes, of course.โ€

โ€œOh?โ€

โ€œIn fact, thatโ€™s the most moving part of the book.โ€

โ€œOoooh?โ€

โ€œMost of the reviews say they want to be like youโ€”the one who nursed that dying girl back to health and saved her life.โ€

โ€œOoooooh?โ€

โ€œHehe. So, youโ€™ll help me out this time too, right, Akkun?โ€

Kanadeโ€™s mother gave a faint smile..
