Episode 21 – Cheers

Iโ€™ve Been Working My Hardest as Manager of the Girlsโ€™ Track and Field Team, but Ever Since I Retired, the Team Members Have Been Coming at Me Like Crazy!?

โ€œโ€ฆIs this a coincidence?โ€

Right after inviting Yukimura sanโ€”one of my momโ€™s clientsโ€”into our house, I got a little flustered and locked myself in the bathroom.

Yukimura.

Iโ€™ve only ever heard that surname before.

Yukimura Mai.

Could she possibly be that girlโ€™s mother?

Now that you mention it, I feel like they look alikeโ€”both in their slender build and their sharp, beautiful features.

โ€ฆโ€ฆIโ€™d like to think Iโ€™m mistaken, but Yukimura is the only person with that last name at my school.

She did say her daughter was under my care.

She mentioned her family was coming over later, but surely notโ€ฆโ€ฆ

โ€œMitsuru, what are you doing? Come out here already.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆOkay.โ€

Hearing my momโ€™s voice, I reluctantly got up and went outside.

Itโ€™d be a hassle to make Mom mad later on.

Please, I hope my hunch is wrong.

โ€œOh, Mitsuru. Hey there.โ€

My wish was crushed in an instant.

When I went back to the kitchen, sitting next to Yukimura-san from earlier was, sure enough, Mai Yukimura.

โ€œโ€ฆHi.โ€

โ€œHey, whatโ€™s wrong? Are you tired, by any chance?โ€

โ€œWell, I just got home. Arenโ€™t you tired, Yukimura?โ€

โ€œNot at all. When I heard your mom invited me over today, all my tiredness just flew right out the window.โ€

Just as Yukimura gave a little smile, Mom came in with some coffee and sat down, saying happily, โ€œI never would have guessed that Yukimura sanโ€™s daughter was your classmate.โ€

โ€œReally, Iโ€™m surprised that Senba sanโ€™s son is such good friends with my daughter.โ€

โ€œMai-chan, my son is always causing you trouble.โ€

โ€œNo, on the contrary, weโ€™re the ones who are always being looked after by Mitsuru.โ€

Seeing Yukimura stand up and bow deeply, my mom seemed more impressed than usual by his polite manners.

โ€œSheโ€™s such a nice girl. Sheโ€™s pretty, tooโ€”arenโ€™t you two more than just friends?โ€

Whispering that to me beside her, Mom had a giddy look on her face.

โ€œNot at all. Weโ€™re just clubmates.โ€

โ€œOh, what a shame. But since youโ€™ve gone to the trouble of coming today, I want you two to relax and enjoy yourselves.โ€

Mom cleared her throat, straightened her back as if to compose herself, and turned to face Yukimura and her mother.

โ€œThank you both so much for coming to visit today. Itโ€™s a small place, but please make yourselves at home.โ€

After her polite greeting, she bowed deeply to the two of them.

I followed her lead and bowed as well, but Yukimuraโ€™s mother said, โ€œNow, now, you two are here in your own home, so please relax.โ€

โ€œHehe, youโ€™re right. Hey, Yukimura san, do you drink?โ€

โ€œYes, of course.โ€

โ€œOh, well then, beer would be better than coffee. And Mitsuru, you go entertain Mai in the next room.โ€

Mom hurriedly took a can of beer out of the fridge and set out some glasses.

โ€œMitsuru, letโ€™s go next door.โ€

Without hesitation, Yukimura stood up and took my hand.

โ€œAh, no, umโ€ฆโ€

โ€œMitsuru kun, please keep my daughter company.โ€

โ€œUh, sure.โ€

Dragged along by Yukimura, I was led into the living room next door.

โ—‡

โ€œMitsuru, I brought some tea and snacks from over there.โ€

Once we were alone, Yukimura dropped her formal, reserved demeanor and returned to her usual self.

Thatโ€™s when I really pulled myself together.

โ€œYukimura, is this a coincidence?โ€

I asked Yukimura first as she returned from the living room with tea and snacks.

โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t play dumb. Is there really such a convenient coincidence for you?โ€

โ€œThat my parents and your parents knew each other? Itโ€™s a small town, so thatโ€™s totally possible.โ€

โ€œYou say that, but youโ€™re lying.โ€

โ€œOh, did I get caught? As expected of Mitsuru, you really know me well.โ€

โ€œHow on earth could a high school student like you connect your parents through work?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s no big deal. I just looked at the business cards my parents brought home and found one that said โ€˜Senba.โ€™ I just asked them to be nice to that person.โ€

โ€œSo she actually listens to you that easily?โ€

โ€œMy mom usually listens to what I say. Hey, hey, anywayโ€ฆโ€

Yukimura didnโ€™t sit across from meโ€”she deliberately sat right next to me.

โ€œH-hey.โ€

โ€œThe adults over there are having a good time drinking. Letโ€™s have a toast, too.โ€

She held up her cup of tea and turned it toward me.

โ€œโ€ฆJust so you know, we have our family here, so donโ€™t get any funny ideas.โ€

โ€œOh, so youโ€™re saying itโ€™d be okay if there are no family?โ€

โ€œW-well, thatโ€™s not what I meant.โ€

โ€œHehe, just kidding. Cheers, then.โ€

There was a dry clink as our cups met.

Yukimura stared intently at me as she slowly sipped her tea.
