Episode 24 – Things are really heating up

Iโ€™ve Been Working My Hardest as Manager of the Girlsโ€™ Track and Field Team, but Ever Since I Retired, the Team Members Have Been Coming at Me Like Crazy!?

โ€œWow, is this from the freshman tournament? That brings back memories.โ€

The first video she opened was from the 100-meter preliminaries of the freshman tournament held that fall.

Back then, Shirotori still lacked the necessary skills; she fell far behind right from the start, and her legs were practically giving out as she approached the finish line.

โ€œMoe was really slow back then, wasnโ€™t she?โ€

โ€œWhat are you talking about? Mai, you were the one who kept fouling.โ€

โ€œI cleared the bar. It just hit my heel a little. Donโ€™t lump me in with Moeโ€”she didnโ€™t even come close.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s with that tone?โ€

โ€œWhat about you?โ€

Suddenly, the mood had shifted to that of a club practice.

Come to think of it, Iโ€™d forgottenโ€”these two hate losing with a passion.

Even though they compete in different events, theyโ€™re always aware of each other, and Yukimura and Shiratori, in particular, used to fight all the time.

โ€œCome on, you two, donโ€™t get so worked up.โ€

โ€œMitchii, Maiโ€™s being pretty harsh right now, isnโ€™t she? Hey?โ€

โ€œMitsu, I was just stating the facts. Was there something wrong with that?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

This has turned into quite a hassle.

But it also feels strangely nostalgic.

I used to get caught in the middle of their fights, and then listen to Yukimuraโ€™s complaints late into the night.

Hmm, I wish I could go back to those days.

โ€œHey, hey, you two. This is Sen-chanโ€™s house, so donโ€™t yell.โ€

When Hayase stepped in, the two of them sat down looking bored and turned their faces away with a โ€œHmph.โ€

This exchange feels nostalgic, too.

Hayase seems like a bit of an oddball, but sheโ€™s actually pretty level-headed in situations like this, so I used to always confide in her about things I couldnโ€™t tell the other two.

โ€ฆโ€ฆThough right now, Hayase is the one who seems the most dangerous.

โ€œUm, anyway, how about this one? The one from the second-year regional qualifiers, when Hayase won her first title?โ€

โ€œAh, thatโ€™s the one where I pulled off a comeback on my final jump in the finals, right? Sen-chan, as always, great choice.โ€

Watching a video of a fond memory, Hayase was in a great mood.

However, the other two werenโ€™t so lucky.

โ€œThatโ€™s the tournament where I pulled a muscle, isnโ€™t it? Mitchi, are you trying to remind me of my bad memories?โ€

โ€œN-no, that wasnโ€™t my intention.โ€

โ€œMitchi, thatโ€™s so mean! Youโ€™re always favoring Masa! Whatโ€™s the deal? You just want me to pull a muscle and die, donโ€™t you!โ€

โ€œC-calm down, Shiratori! Youโ€™re shouting too loud.โ€

As Shiratori went berserk, Yukimura shook her head in exasperation.

โ€œMoe really is childish in that way.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s that supposed to mean, Mai? Youโ€™re the one who always gets irritable when you lose a match.โ€

โ€œWell, itโ€™s frustrating, so I canโ€™t help it. But I donโ€™t lose my cool like Moe does. I wouldnโ€™t want to be a burden to Mitsuru.โ€

โ€œYou think Iโ€™m a burden?โ€

โ€œA girl whoโ€™s always acting all clingy isnโ€™t good enough for Mitsuru. If it were me, Iโ€™d support him as an equal.โ€

Yukimura, looking cool and collected, glanced at me and said, โ€œRight?โ€

Whatโ€™s with the โ€œRightโ€?

Youโ€™re the one whoโ€™s always causing trouble.

โ€œMitchii, do you have the video of my first championship win?โ€

โ€œOh, that was the Six-School Tournament. Of course I have it.โ€

Shiratori first made a name for herself during the annual inter-school competition held with neighboring schools.

Perhaps it was a blessing in disguiseโ€”after focusing on core training while recovering from a muscle strain, she began rapidly improving her times once she returned to competition, and it was at that tournament that she won her first championship.

I remember the two of us crying tears of joy back then.

Ah, I wish I could go back to those days.

โ€œWow, Iโ€™m actually running pretty well here.โ€

โ€œYou were outstanding back then. Seriously, if youโ€™d been able to run like that at the Nationals, making the finals wouldnโ€™t have been a pipe dream.โ€

โ€œBut I got this fast thanks to you, Mitchi.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s all thanks to your hard work, Shiratori.โ€

โ€œHey, Mitsuru, donโ€™t you have any of mine?โ€

โ€œOf course I have some of yours too, Yukimura. Look, that one from the spring of our third year when you set your personal best. In this one, youโ€™re clearing the bar by at least ten centimeters.โ€

The jump Yukimura made at the meetโ€”the best Iโ€™d ever seen her do, as far as I could tell.

Even the โ€œWhoa!โ€ that slipped out of my mouth while I was filming was perfectly captured on video.

โ€œHmm, if only I couldโ€™ve done that at the Nationals. But really, itโ€™s all thanks to Mitsuru that Iโ€™ve gotten this good.โ€

โ€œYukimura had talent. Plus, itโ€™s the result of her constantly thinking about how to jump higher.โ€

โ€œEveryone, we were able to grow like this thanks to Sen-chan, right? Seriously, Sen-chan is amazing.โ€

All three of them nodded thoughtfully as they looked back on the past.

Yeah, I donโ€™t know why, but the atmosphere feels peaceful.

No oneโ€™s saying they want to wreak havoc, or be wrecked, or be locked up.

I see. It seems the habits from club activities are still deeply ingrained in these guys.

I should keep the conversation focused on memories of club activities as much as possible to maintain this atmosphere.

โ€œUm, well then, letโ€™s watch the footage from the last Inter-High qualifiers too.โ€

โ€œMore importantly, Mitchi, why are Mai and Masa here?โ€

Shiratori slammed her glass down and interrupted.

โ€œUhโ€ฆ well, thatโ€™sโ€ฆ it just so happened thatโ€ฆโ€

โ€œJust so happened? If I hadnโ€™t come, what were the three of you planning to do?โ€

โ€œN-nothing in particular.โ€

โ€œHey, Mitsuru.โ€

This time, Yukimura spoke up.

โ€œWhy are Masa and Moe at your house? You werenโ€™t inviting them over behind my back all this time, were you?โ€

โ€œN-no way. This is the first time for everyone.โ€

โ€œReally? Youโ€™re not lying?โ€

โ€œI-Iโ€™m not lying.โ€

โ€œHey, Sen-chan.โ€

Of course, Hayase wasnโ€™t going to stay quiet either.

โ€œWhat were you doing alone with Mai-chan? Why are you here separately even though you came with your parents?โ€

โ€œW-well, my parents wanted to talk among adults.โ€

โ€œOr so you say, but werenโ€™t you planning to sneak off and make out behind your parentsโ€™ backs?โ€

โ€œN-no way. I wouldnโ€™t do something like that with my parents right next to me.โ€

โ€œBut Sen-chan and Mai-chanโ€™s moms just left.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHuh?โ€

Come to think of it, it was quiet next door.

I hurriedly opened the kitchen door, but the two of them were nowhere to be seen; only a messy table remained.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHuh? Where did they go?โ€

โ€œThey were getting really into it a moment ago and left together.โ€

โ€œNo way.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s true.โ€

I couldnโ€™t believe it.

Somewhere deep down, Iโ€™d thought it would be fine because Mom was right next door, but that sense of security crumbled in an instant.

โ€œMitchy, itโ€™s just us now, isnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œMitsuru, the night is long.โ€

โ€œSen-chan, whereโ€™s your room?โ€

The look in all three of their eyes changed.

Trying to change the mood, I tried to play a random video on my laptop, but Yukimura snapped the lid shut.

โ€œMitsu, what are we gonna do now?โ€

โ€œW-what do you meanโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œSen-chan.โ€

โ€œMitchy.โ€

The three of them stared intently at me.

If this keeps up, Iโ€™m definitely going to get attacked.

Someone, anyone, help me!
