Episode 21 – Study Sessions That Aren’t Really for Studying 1

My Childhood Friend, a Vtuber, Treated Me Like Trashโ€”Iโ€™m Never Producing For Her Again

In the end, I grabbed Mizuta-sanโ€™s wrist and practically dragged her inside.

Of course, just like last time, I didnโ€™t take her to my roomโ€”I led her into the living room.

โ€œWould you like some coffee?โ€

โ€œY-yesโ€ฆ!โ€

To help Mizutaโ€”who was still as stiff as a boardโ€”relax, I decided to make her coffee, just like I did the first time she visited.

I added plenty of milk and sugar syrup, making it just as sweet as I had that day.

When I handed her the coffee cup, she took a sip right away.

โ€œKomachi-sanโ€™s coffee is always so deliciousโ€ฆ!โ€

Iโ€™m glad she liked itโ€”thatโ€™s what matters most.

Itโ€™s just ordinary cold brew coffee, but it seems to have helped her relax a little.

โ€œBy the way, Mizuta-san, you have a pop quiz tomorrow, right?โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

Mizuta-sanโ€™s eyes widened as if to say sheโ€™d never heard of it before.

No wayโ€ฆ

โ€œThe teacher mentioned it last week, didnโ€™t she? That thereโ€™d be a pop quiz next Tuesday.โ€

โ€œW-was that soโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆWere you sleeping during class and didnโ€™t hear it?โ€

โ€œN-no, thatโ€™s notโ€”โ€

Mizuta-san looked away.

It seems I hit the nail on the head.

Since this is a good opportunity, I might as well probe a little about her grades.

โ€œMizuta, you havenโ€™t been studying much, have you?โ€

โ€œUghโ€ฆ Itโ€™s n-not that I havenโ€™t been studyingโ€”itโ€™s just that I canโ€™tโ€ฆโ€

โ€œHow were your grades at your previous school?โ€

โ€œW-wellโ€ฆโ€

Mizuta fidgeted, twisting her fingers together.

โ€œItโ€™d be faster to count from the bottom of the classโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

It seems more serious than I expected.

Come to think of it, sheโ€™s always dozing off in class.

And once she gets home, itโ€™s nothing but VTuber activities and video gamesโ€”so I guess itโ€™s only natural.

Iโ€™m surprised her parents havenโ€™t scolded her yet.

โ€œWell then, Mizuta-san.โ€

โ€œI have a bad feeling about thisโ€ฆโ€

โ€œLetโ€™s study.โ€

โ€œI knew itโ€ฆ!!โ€

Mizuta-san shook her head vigorously from side to side.

โ€œIโ€™m stupid, so studying is impossible for me to begin withโ€ฆ!โ€

โ€œWell, studying is actually necessary for your VTuber activities, you know.โ€

โ€œHuh? R-reallyโ€ฆ?โ€

To be honest, the biggest reason is that streamers are generally better off having a side job.

Streaming revenue fluctuates wildly, and most people canโ€™t even make a decent living from it to begin with.

So whether you go to college or get a job, itโ€™s better to have some kind of safety net.

That said, even if I brought that up, it probably wouldnโ€™t do much to boost Mizuta-sanโ€™s motivation.

โ€œMizuta-san, being airheaded and being ignorant are two different things.โ€

โ€œHuh? W-what do you meanโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œFrom a viewerโ€™s perspective, itโ€™s fine if youโ€™re airheaded and funny. But coming across as completely lacking in common sense is a no-go.โ€

โ€œI-I seeโ€ฆโ€

As expected, when the topic directly relates to her VTuber activities, Mizuta-san listens seriously.

After all, Iโ€™m not just spouting nonsense.

โ€œSo, doing the bare minimum of studying will actually help with your VTuber activities.โ€

โ€œUghโ€ฆ I get it, Iโ€™ll studyโ€ฆ By the way, what rank are you, Komachi-san?โ€

โ€œWell, to be honest, Iโ€™m not that great either. Just a little above average.โ€

My grades have slipped a bit lately because Iโ€™ve been spending so much time helping Yue.

Come to think of it, just a little above average in everythingโ€”I feel like thatโ€™s the kind of life Iโ€™ve led.

Whether itโ€™s gaming skills, academics, or height.

โ€œWaaahโ€ฆ Youโ€™re so smartโ€ฆโ€

โ€œIโ€™m better than Mizuta-san, though.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s so meanโ€ฆ But youโ€™re right.โ€

โ€œWell then, letโ€™s get right to it and study for tomorrowโ€™s quiz.โ€

Mizuta-san slumped her shoulders in disappointment.

She always lights up when it comes to VTubers, but studying really doesnโ€™t seem to suit her at all.

Just as I stood up to go to my room to get my study materials,

โ€œW-well then, Komachi-san. I donโ€™t mean to take advantage of the situation, butโ€ฆ c-could you grant me one favorโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œSure, what is it?โ€

For some reason, Mizuta-san blushed as she fidgeted nervously with her fingertips.

โ€œS-since weโ€™re at it, Iโ€™d rather do it in your room, Komachi-san, instead of the living roomโ€ฆโ€

I couldnโ€™t help but swallow hard.

Calm downโ€”this is strictly for studying.

Thatโ€™s not what she means.

Desperately trying to keep my composure, I managed to nod.

โ€œAlright, letโ€™s do that then. Itโ€™s just a totally ordinary otaku room, though.โ€

โ€œAn o-otaku roomโ€ฆ! My heartโ€™s racing a littleโ€ฆ!โ€

Why?

Donโ€™t most people find that kind of thing gross?

As always, I just donโ€™t get Mizuta-sanโ€™s sensibilities at all.

Anyway, I went upstairs with her.

The moment I put my hand on my bedroom door, she let out a gasp of โ€œAhโ€ฆ!โ€ and cringed.

โ€œU-umโ€ฆ I guess youโ€™ll need some time to tidy up, rightโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œHuh? No, thereโ€™s absolutely no need for that.โ€

I clean and tidy up every day.

โ€œB-but, I mean, in a boyโ€™s room, thereโ€™s bound to be books like that, or, u-um, stuff with holes in themโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆWhat kind of prejudice do you have, exactly?โ€

โ€œI-I know, I knowโ€ฆ! I saw in an eroge that itโ€™s only natural for a healthy boyโ€ฆ!!โ€

โ€œPlease donโ€™t learn common sense from eroge.โ€

Brushing off Mizuta-sanโ€™s out-of-the-blue remark, I swung the door wide open.

Then she covered her face with both hands.

Itโ€™s a classic trope for her to peek through the gaps between her fingers.

โ€œI-itโ€™s surprisingly normalโ€ฆ And itโ€™s cleaner than my roomโ€ฆโ€

Mizuta-san lowered her hands from her face and looked around the room with curiosity, as if sheโ€™d just stepped into a museum.

โ€œIs this your first time in a guyโ€™s room?โ€

โ€œY-yesโ€ฆ Well, itโ€™s not just a guyโ€™s roomโ€”itโ€™s actually my first time ever being in someone elseโ€™s roomโ€ฆโ€

โ€œOhโ€ฆโ€

Suddenly, the mood turned a bit somber.

It struck me that, up until now, neither of us had ever had a friend close enough to visit each otherโ€™s homes.

Mizuta looked at the figurine display case in the corner of the room and asked,

โ€œKomachi, do you like bunnies? โ€

โ€œHuh? Well, I guess I like them as much as the average personโ€ฆ Besides, I just bought them because I like the characters.โ€

โ€œSo, youโ€™re not interested in real-life bunnies or anything?โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

I instinctively turned my face toward Mizuta-san.

Immediately, her strikingly prominent chest caught my eye.

I shook my head inwardly, thinking, โ€œNo, no,โ€ and hurriedly banished those impure thoughts.

โ€œI-itโ€™s just about average, really.โ€

โ€œHow much is โ€˜averageโ€™โ€ฆ? Donโ€™t most guys usually like bunny girlsโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œWell, I guess most of them do, donโ€™t they?โ€

โ€œSo you like them too, Komachi-san?โ€

It was hard to deny that, to be honest.

After all, Iโ€™m the type who usually spends money on in-app purchases whenever a bunny skin comes out in mobile games.

As I stood there unable to answer, Mizuta-san flashed a somewhat knowing smile.

โ€œHehe, I think Iโ€™ve got a pretty good idea of Komachi-sanโ€™s taste. You like cute bunny girls with great figures and long black hair, right?โ€

โ€œN-noโ€ฆโ€

Maybe I shouldโ€™ve hidden the figurine before coming into the room.

Yue was pretty much the only girl Iโ€™d ever let into my room, and since she already knew about it, the idea of hiding it hadnโ€™t even crossed my mind.

Mizuta-san took a quick step forward, closing the distance between us.

โ€œMy face isnโ€™t as cute as this figureโ€™sโ€ฆ but my figure and hairstyle are similarโ€ฆ If I dressed up in a bunny cosplay like this one, would you be happy, Komachi-sanโ€ฆ?โ€
