Episode 4 – The Baker’s Daughter Who Knows Nothing

My Childhood Friend, a Vtuber, Treated Me Like Trashโ€”Iโ€™m Never Producing For Her Again

I let Mizuta san into my house.

That said, I didnโ€™t take her to my bedroomโ€”I showed her into the living room.

Even so, it felt kind of strange to have a girl other than Yue in my house.

โ€œWould you like something to drink?โ€

โ€œW-well, then, Iโ€™ll have coffeeโ€ฆ With extra milk, and made really sweetโ€ฆ Oh, and iced, if possible.โ€

โ€œOh, sure.โ€

Sheโ€™s asking for a lot.

Well, whatever.

I took some cold-brewed coffee out of the fridge and poured it into a glass.

I added ice and milk just as she asked, poured in plenty of sugar syrup, and set it down in front of her.

โ€œO-oh, this is deliciousโ€ฆ! Did you make this yourself?โ€

โ€œYeah, well, something like that.โ€

It just takes a while; itโ€™s not that hard to make.

Once itโ€™s brewed, it lasts for a few days.

Though, to be honest, my dad drinks it more often than I do.

(Mizuta-san really is cute, isnโ€™t she?)

Although her messy bangs hid it, if you looked closely, she had all the traits of a beauty.

Smooth, fair skin. Large eyes framed by long lashes. A straight, delicate nose, and soft-looking, pale pink lipsโ€”.

No, now isnโ€™t the time to be thinking about things like that.

โ€œSo, Mizuta-san, whatโ€™s this about?โ€

I already asked you that at the front door a little while ago.

โ€œAh, y-yesโ€ฆ Wellโ€ฆ Iโ€™m really s-sorry about yesterdayโ€ฆโ€

Mizuta-san bowed her head deeply.

Well, itโ€™s not like I wanted her to apologize this dramatically.

Actually, it wasnโ€™t that loud after I told her to keep it down.

โ€œUm, this is bread from the shop my mom runsโ€ฆโ€

Saying that, Mizuta-san held out a paper bag.

I looked down and saw it was a bag from a famous bakery in the next town over.

Which meansโ€”

โ€œDoes Mizuta-sanโ€™s mom run a bakery?โ€

โ€œYesโ€ฆ Itโ€™s my momโ€™s only talent, so I can guarantee the tasteโ€ฆโ€

โ€œHer only talentโ€โ€”isnโ€™t that a bit harsh?

Anyway, the shop seems to have quite a reputation for its taste, and thereโ€™s always a line out the door.

โ€œIโ€™ll dig in. Iโ€™m sorry I barged in on you out of the blue yesterday, too.โ€

โ€œN-noโ€ฆ but I was really startled. I never imagined thereโ€™d be a stalker targeting someone as lowly as meโ€ฆ!!โ€

Mizuta shuddered.

It must have been really scary for her.

โ€ฆAdmittedly, I was in the wrong there.

Keeping her head bowed slightly, she continued.

โ€œBut it turns out it wasnโ€™t a stalker after all. Come to think of it, that makes sense. No one would go after a nobody like me, and anyway, a stalker would probably go after the famous big names.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not necessarily true. Itโ€™s better to be safe than sorry, and you should avoid talking about personal stuff during your streams.โ€

โ€œR-reallyโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œYeah. If youโ€™re not careful, people could figure out who you are.โ€

To begin with, if youโ€™re not trying to deliberately come across as a high school girl, you donโ€™t even need to reveal that youโ€™re a student.

โ€œW-well, then what should I talk aboutโ€ฆ? I have to make small talk before the game, right? Like, โ€˜the flowers I saw today,โ€™ or somethingโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œIt doesnโ€™t have to be flowers specifically, but you should avoid talking about flowers altogether. Even just mentioning the type or when they bloom can narrow down your location.โ€

โ€œEekโ€ฆโ€

Mizutaโ€™s face turned pale.

Sheโ€™s definitely talked about flowers before.

It feels like Iโ€™m watching a textbook example of a beginner streamer.

I remembered when I first taught Yue all this stuff.

โ€œThen what on earth am I supposed to talk aboutโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s best to stick to topics that arenโ€™t too region-specific.โ€

โ€œRegion-specificโ€ฆ? Like convenience stores?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not a great idea either. The chains that operate vary by region, and people can sometimes guess where a store is located based on its product lineup.โ€

โ€œEekโ€ฆ Then the only thing left is the weather, right?โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s no topic that reveals regional differences more clearly than the weatherโ€ฆโ€

Mizuta, you really donโ€™t know much, do you?

Itโ€™s amazing youโ€™ve managed to keep this up for over a year in this state.

Maybe itโ€™s precisely because youโ€™ve been at the bottom all this time that youโ€™ve actually avoided any problems so far.

โ€œJust use whateverโ€™s trending nationwide as casual conversation topics.โ€

โ€œTrending nationwide? N-news?โ€

โ€œJust to be clear, politics and current events are completely off-limits.โ€

โ€œI-I know that much even I doโ€ฆ!โ€

Good to hear.

โ€œThings like topics youโ€™ve seen recently on social media or YouTube, or news about your favorite anime, games, or movies. Those kinds of things arenโ€™t tied to any specific region.โ€

โ€œOh, I-I seeโ€ฆ! I thought that since itโ€™s small talk, I naturally had to talk about myselfโ€ฆโ€

โ€œThis isnโ€™t a diary. Of course, the goal isnโ€™t just to report facts like the news, right? We want to show how you, Mizuta-san, react to these topicsโ€”like how youโ€™re looking forward to them.โ€

โ€œI-I seeโ€ฆโ€

Mizuta-san suddenly pulled out her smartphone and began tapping away frantically.

She must be taking notes.

Even so, she types incredibly fast.

โ€œOh, and just one more thingโ€”youโ€™re using a condenser mic right now, arenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œA, a condenserโ€ฆ? Whatโ€™s that?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆWell, didnโ€™t you buy the mic yourself?โ€

โ€œI did buy it, but I just randomly picked up a โ€˜VTuber equipment setโ€™ I saw on a secondhand site, so to be honest, I donโ€™t really understand it. The setup was completely baffling to me, so in the end, I had to call a technician to come out. It was super expensiveโ€ฆโ€

โ€œSo, if you run into equipment trouble, you canโ€™t handle it on your own at all?โ€

โ€œYeahโ€ฆโ€

At the very least, you should know what your equipment is made of and how itโ€™s all connected.

Your viewers might give you advice in the comments.

โ€œAnyway, I think youโ€™re probably using a condenser mic right now. But your room isnโ€™t soundproofed at all, is it?โ€

โ€œYeah, soundproofing costs a fortuneโ€ฆโ€

โ€œRight. So first, you should switch to a dynamic mic, reevaluate your setup, and make it less likely to pick up unwanted ambient noise.โ€

That way, you can significantly reduce the number of incidents where the sound of campaign cars or emergency broadcasts gets picked up in your stream and gives away your identity.

Of course, that means youโ€™ll have to be more careful about the angle and distance from the mic to ensure your voice is picked up clearly.

โ€œUmโ€ฆ wellโ€ฆ whatโ€™s your nameโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆIโ€™m Komachi Tasuku.โ€

โ€œS-sorry. Iโ€™m not very good at remembering peopleโ€™s namesโ€ฆ A-anyway, Komachi san, you seem to know a lot about this kind of thing. A-are you maybe in this industry or somethingโ€ฆ?โ€

Information like this is easy to find with a quick online search.

Well, itโ€™s true that after what happened with Yue, I ended up knowing more about this than most people.

Itโ€™s a bitter memory now, but if it helps someone, itโ€™s not all bad.

โ€œNo, thatโ€™s not it. A while back, I helped out an acquaintance who wanted to become a VTuber. I just picked it up back then.โ€

โ€œI-I seeโ€ฆ! So in a way, youโ€™re an expertโ€ฆ!โ€

Did you even listen to what I was saying?

โ€œW-well then, Komachi-san, if something goes wrong during my stream, is it okay if I come talk to you like thisโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œHmmโ€ฆโ€

โ€œO-of course, Iโ€™ll bring plenty of my momโ€™s bread!โ€

โ€œOh, well then, Iโ€™ll count on you.โ€

โ€œSo my momโ€™s bread is more appealing than the VTuber herself!? I know thatโ€™s how it is! Even though Iโ€™m the VTuber myself! No matter how low-tier I am!!โ€

Mizuta-san slumped her shoulders in disappointment.
