Episode 3 – A strong attachment

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

After high school, we decided to take the train from the station nearest our school and ride it all the way to the station near my house.

โ€œWow, the scenery around here brings back memories.โ€

As the train approached the station near my house, Kanade gazed out the window at the view with a nostalgic look on her face.

Watching her profile, memories from the past came flooding back to me.

Iโ€™m pretty sure it was back when I had just started elementary school.

Kanade and I were riding the train, just the two of us, on our way to a nearby shopping mall.

โ€œLook, look! My house is over there, right?โ€

Just like now, back then tooโ€ฆ Kanade was happily gazing at the scenery outside the window.

โ€œYou havenโ€™t changed a bit since then.โ€

Perhaps because I was lost in those memories, the words slipped out before I could stop them.

โ€œI donโ€™t know what era youโ€™re talking about, but Iโ€™ve actually changed quite a bit, you know?โ€

โ€œReally?โ€

โ€œYeah. After all, Iโ€™ve nearly died once.โ€

Kanade took her eyes off the window and gave me a shy smile.

Seeing her smile like that, my heart didnโ€™t exactly feel all warm and fuzzy.

She nearly died.

When hit with such a powerful statement, thereโ€™s no way I could feel warm and fuzzy.

โ€œโ€ฆAre you okay with your illness now?โ€

โ€œYeah. Sorry for worrying you.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆI see.โ€

Kanadeโ€™s story about her illness ended just as abruptly as it began.

Having seen her in that state back then, this was a topic I didnโ€™t want to wrap up in such a brief exchangeโ€ฆ but prying into every detail would probably be tactless.

โ€œThanks, A-kun.โ€

Kanade offered her thanks.

โ€œItโ€™s because you worried about me so much that Iโ€™m still alive today, you know?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œI mean, you knowโ€ฆ that thing. โ€˜Love saves people,โ€™ right?โ€

โ€œIf youโ€™re going to say that, itโ€™s โ€˜Love saves the Earth.โ€™โ€

I feel like that catchphrase was used by some charity program that embezzled donations.

โ€œWait, was that it?โ€

โ€œAhaha,โ€ Kanade laughed again.

โ€œWell, anyway, itโ€™s a fact that I was saved by love, right?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆThatโ€™s not right.โ€

I looked down.

โ€œBecause if love saves peopleโ€™s livesโ€ฆ then there shouldnโ€™t be any lives leaving this world, right?โ€

To put it another way, if love saves peopleโ€™s lives, then everyone who has passed away must have been unloved by others.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆThat canโ€™t be true. Right?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆAkkun?โ€

โ€œI can say this with certainty. Love cannot save people.โ€

I looked up.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆLove isnโ€™t something that saves people. Itโ€™s just that love is essential for people to live.โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

โ€œIf you donโ€™t love someone, you wouldnโ€™t even feel like paying their expensive medical bills, and to begin with, you wouldnโ€™t feel like providing the food, clothing, and shelter necessary for them to survive. So, while love canโ€™t save people, people canโ€™t live without it.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆI see.โ€

It seemed Kanade had finally accepted it.

โ€œSo, does that mean Iโ€™m still alive thanks to you, after all?โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆWas she really convinced?

โ€œAkkun, do you know why I wanted to live?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHuh?โ€

โ€œThe treatment was painful, I nearly died, and there were times I felt like giving up, thinking I was done for. Even so, do you know why I managed to pull myself together time and time again and decide to keep living?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆThereโ€™s no way I could know that.โ€

โ€œI guess not. But itโ€™s actually really simple.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆAn announcement came over the intercom that the train would soon arrive at the station nearest my home.

โ€œThe reason I was able to stay motivated to live was because I couldnโ€™t forget the worried look on your face as you left that day.โ€

The train began to slow down.

โ€œIf I hadnโ€™t wanted to see you again, Iโ€™m sure I would have died long ago.โ€

I couldnโ€™t think of anything to say to Kanade, who was talking about her own life and death as if it were a joke.

โ€œLook, the trainโ€™s arriving.โ€

Outside the window, the platform of our nearest station came into view.

We got off the train.

Itโ€™s about a fifteen-minute walk from the station nearest my house to my home. We stopped at a convenience store along the way to buy some snacks, so we didnโ€™t arrive home until about thirty minutes after we got off the train.

โ€œExcuse me for coming in.โ€

โ€œSure.โ€

โ€œWhere are your parents?โ€

โ€œTheyโ€™re both at work today. I think they said theyโ€™d be coming home late.โ€

โ€œOh, really? Thatโ€™s tough.โ€

โ€œYeah. It seems tough. Iโ€™m truly grateful, though.โ€

I really canโ€™t hold a candle to my parents, who go to work even when they donโ€™t want to, just to make ends meet.

โ€œSince Iโ€™m here, I kind of wanted to see them, too.โ€

โ€œWell, maybe next time.โ€

โ€œYeah. Iโ€™ll do that.โ€

Kanade nodded.

โ€œAlright. Then letโ€™s go to A-kunโ€™s room.โ€

And, cutting off the flow of the conversation, she blurted that out.

โ€œI donโ€™t want to.โ€

โ€œNo way.โ€

โ€œEhโ€ฆ?โ€

Once she said โ€œno,โ€ there was no way to refuse if she insisted.

โ€œโ€ฆI wonโ€™t let you stay long, okay?โ€

โ€œYeah. Of course. I was only planning to say hi today anyway.โ€

Kanade seemed to be having fun the whole time.

Reluctantly, I led Kanade to my room.

โ€œWowโ€ฆโ€

As soon as she stepped inside, Kanade let out a gasp of admiration.

โ€œYouโ€™ve kept it really clean.โ€

โ€œWellโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve redecorated, too.โ€

โ€œWell, itโ€™s been years since you were last in this room, so Iโ€™ve redecorated a few times.โ€

What on earth was that about?

โ€œOh, right. Actually, I brought a gift to mark our reunion today.โ€

Suddenly, as if sheโ€™d just remembered, Kanade rummaged through her bag.

โ€œHuh, really? I feel a little bad about that.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s fine. Well, if youโ€™d like, you can thank me somehow next time.โ€

โ€œOf course.โ€

Kanadeโ€™s face lit up, as if sheโ€™d found what she was looking for in her bag.

โ€œHere you go.โ€

The gift Kanade handed me wasโ€ฆ

โ€œโ€ฆA teddy bear?โ€

Faced with such a rather fancy gift, I wasnโ€™t sure how to react.

For a moment, I wondered if sheโ€™d given the gift to the wrong personโ€ฆ but seeing Kanade smiling so happily, I didnโ€™t feel I could ask.

โ€œThank youโ€ฆโ€

For the time being, I accepted the teddy bear.

โ€ฆWell, maybe in France or somewhere, thereโ€™s a culture of giving teddy bears as a token of reunion, so itโ€™s probably best not to make a big deal out of it.

โ€œThink of me when you look at it, and display it in your room.โ€

โ€œOh, yeahโ€ฆโ€

โ€œI think that spot over there would be good.โ€

Kanade pointed to the very top shelf of a five-tier bookshelf in the corner of the roomโ€”one that was taller than I was.

โ€œโ€ฆArenโ€™t teddy bears meant to be cherished? If you put it up there, wonโ€™t it be hard to pick it up and admire it?โ€

โ€œCome on, itโ€™s fine.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆIt might get covered in dust, you know?โ€

โ€œCome on, itโ€™s fine.โ€

โ€ฆSheโ€™s not getting it.

โ€œAlright. Iโ€™ll put it up.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

Kanade nodded.

โ€œOf course, make sure the teddy bearโ€™s face is facing forward, okay?โ€

โ€œHuh, uhโ€ฆ yeah.โ€

Is that really something I need to specifically tell him?

โ€œAlso, try not to move it around too much, okay?โ€

โ€œHuhโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œFrom now on, Iโ€™ll come by every so often to check if youโ€™ve moved it.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆWhy?

โ€œBecause Iโ€™ll know right away if you move it, you know?โ€

So why?
