Episode 7 – Teasing

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

Walking to school with Kanade, who was in such high spirits, reminded me of our days back in the lower grades of elementary schoolโ€”before she was forced to spend time in the hospital due to her illnessโ€”and it was a lot of fun.
ใ€€
โ€œWhen we walk to school together like this, do we look like a couple to people watching us?โ€

Still, I was feeling a little fed up with Kanadeโ€™s sillyโ€ฆ typical high school girlโ€™s romantic musings.

โ€œOf course not.โ€

โ€œEh? How can you be so sure?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆBecause if people compare our appearances, hardly anyone would think weโ€™re a couple.โ€

Humans are creatures that tend to find partners who are on their level.

A flawed guy like me isnโ€™t a good match for a perfect person like Kanade.

โ€œThatโ€™s not true. A-kun is really wonderful.โ€

Apparently, Kanade wasnโ€™t convinced by my argument.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆItโ€™s a concept from psychology, but apparently thereโ€™s something called the mere-exposure effect.โ€

For the time being, I decided to show off the knowledge I had.

โ€œWhat that effect is, is a phenomenon where repeated contact with a specific personโ€”in other words, repeatedly meeting and talking with themโ€”causes your favorability toward them to increase, and even their appearance starts to look better to you.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆAnd so?โ€

โ€œThe reason youโ€™ve come to overestimate me is precisely because of that phenomenon.โ€

โ€œHmm.โ€

Kanade didnโ€™t seem very interested.

โ€œAkkun. Iโ€™m just guessing, but I think youโ€™re wrong.โ€

No, it seems she was interested after all. It just looks like she still didnโ€™t agree with my theory.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆWhy?โ€

โ€œBecause we havenโ€™t been seeing each other regularly, have we?โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆTrue.

โ€œItโ€™s our first reunion in years. Itโ€™s fateful.โ€

Iโ€™m not really sure why she used that inverted sentence structure.

โ€œWell, anyway, Akkun, youโ€™re a really wonderful guy, right?โ€

โ€œYeah, yeah.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆNo, but I donโ€™t think I want everyone to notice that.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHehe. Why do you think?โ€

I donโ€™t know.

While we were having that conversation, we arrived at school.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆUmโ€ฆโ€

โ€œThe shoe lockers are this way.โ€

Kanade, who had only been inside the school building once before, seemed to have lost her bearings.

I decided to lead the way to the classroom, serving as her guide.

โ€œThanks.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s the only thing I can do.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not true. Youโ€™re always helping me out.โ€

โ€ฆThatโ€™s not true.

In the hallway, Kanade and I walked side by side, matching our steps.

Every now and then, Kanadeโ€™s gaze from beside me would pierce my cheek. It didnโ€™t feel unpleasant. I did feel a little embarrassed, though.

โ€ฆโ€ฆI kind of wanted to get to the classroom quickly, but then again, maybe not.

โ€œGood morning!โ€

Neither too fast nor too slow, at our usual pace, we arrived at the classroom.

Hearing Kanadeโ€™s cheerful voiceโ€ฆ

โ€œAhโ€ฆโ€

Our classmates fixed their intense stares on us as we stood frozen in front of the classroom door.

โ€œโ€ฆSee? Itโ€™s surprising, isnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œReally, reallyโ€ฆโ€

Even though Kanade had gone out of her way to greet them enthusiastically to try to fit in with the class.

The classmates didnโ€™t respond; they were engrossed in whispering among themselves.

โ€ฆโ€ฆItโ€™s obvious now, but those intense stares from our classmates were nothing but looks of curiosity.

And the targets of that curiosity were, without a doubt, the two of us.

โ€ฆWhat an unpleasant atmosphere.

Itโ€™s bad enough just being put in the spotlight, but to be the subject of gossip makes it feel even worse.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆGood morning, Ichinose-san.โ€

One of the girls who had been engrossed in the gossipโ€”Kadowara-sanโ€”came up to us, still fixing her curious gaze on us.

The look of curiosity she was giving usโ€ฆ seemed to hint at a hint of mockery.

โ€œHey, are you two dating?โ€

โ€ฆI couldnโ€™t help but recall the conversation Iโ€™d had with Kanade on the way to school.

Apparently, just as Kanade had said, from an outsiderโ€™s perspective, weโ€ฆ must have looked like a couple.

โ€ฆโ€ฆShould I immediately deny it out loud?

If a weird rumor spread that she was dating someone like me, it could affect Kanadeโ€™s future school life.

But then again, she was the one who was askedโ€ฆ If Kanade doesnโ€™t answer herself, the feisty-looking Kadokura might take her anger out on someone else.

โ€ฆโ€ฆI glanced briefly at Kanade to see how she was doing.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆUgh.โ€

I let out a strange sound and was startled.

Kanade was smiling.

It was obvious that the other person was trying to mock us, and even though I, standing right next to her, was flusteredโ€ฆ she was smiling as if she didnโ€™t care about any of it.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆW-what do you think?โ€

The pressure emanating from that smile was intense, and Kadokura-san had taken a step back.

Kanade had been smiling the whole time and hadnโ€™t answered Kadokura-sanโ€™s questionโ€ฆ but then.

โ€œHmmโ€ฆโ€

It seemed sheโ€™d finally decided to speak up.

โ€œWhich do you think?โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

โ€œDo we look like weโ€™re dating?โ€

โ€ฆAn unexpected counter-question.

Kadokura-san was taken aback.

โ€œโ€ฆI donโ€™t think youโ€™re dating.โ€

After a moment, Kadokura-san replied.

โ€œYou two arenโ€™t a good match at all.โ€

Hearing that answer, I thought.

Then why did you ask if we were dating?

That question only makes sense if you feel, even just a little, that we are datingโ€ฆ If that werenโ€™t the case, the only normal reaction would be to think, โ€œWhat a mean person.โ€

In other words, havenโ€™t you just ended up exposing your own pettiness?

โ€ฆWell, I wonโ€™t nitpick too much about it.

Actually, we arenโ€™t dating.

And thanks to her making a fool of herself, Kanadeโ€™s honor has been preserved.

โ€ฆIโ€™m sure Kanade must have wanted this to happen, too.

Thinking that, I gave Kanade another lookโ€ฆ

โ€œโ€ฆI see.โ€

โ€ฆWatching Kanade glare at Kadokura-san with those cold eyes, a cold sweat trickled down my spine.
