Episode 19 – At long last

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

I feel like I can hear the sound of a gentle breeze rustling the leaves in the distance.

Sleeping with the sensation of Kanadeโ€™s lap against the back of my head was quite the exquisite experience.

Just how long had I been asleep?

โ€œAkkun, itโ€™s time to wake up.โ€

Called by Kanade, I woke up, my head still feeling fuzzy.

Still half-asleep, I rubbed my eyes and sat up.

โ€œโ€ฆGood morning, Akkun.โ€

Keeping my eyes half-closed, I scanned my surroundings and noticed Kanade standing nearby.

She was smiling at me.

But the situation felt strangely off.

I was supposed to have fallen asleep on Kanadeโ€™s lap just a moment agoโ€ฆ but for some reason, I was now asleep on a bed.

Looking closely at where the bed was, I saw medical supplies and white curtains, and realized I was in the infirmary.

โ€œโ€ฆWhy am I in the infirmary?โ€

โ€œAkkun. You were sleeping so soundly, I carried you all the way here.โ€

โ€œHuh. Is that so?โ€

โ€œYeah. The nurse said you must have been pushing yourself too hard lately.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆWait, what time is it now?โ€

โ€œ5:00 PM.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s way past school hoursโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆSorry.โ€

Kanade apologized, looking apologetic.

โ€œWhy are you apologizing, Kanade? Itโ€™s my fault for overworking myself, isnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€

Kanade was smiling, but there was a thin sheen of sweat on her forehead.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆSo you skipped your afternoon classes, huh?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry?โ€

โ€œI said, donโ€™t apologize. Iโ€™m fine.โ€

I stood up from the bed.

โ€œOh, are you feeling better already?โ€

Just as I stood up, the school nurse spoke to me.

โ€œYes. Iโ€™m sorry to have caused you worry.โ€

โ€œNo, no. But you really shouldnโ€™t push yourself too hard, okay?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s well known among the teachers that youโ€™re a dedicated studentโ€ฆ but I never imagined youโ€™d be so absorbed in your studies that youโ€™d end up sleep-deprived.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆIโ€™m sorry.โ€

โ€œWell, if this teaches you a lesson, try to take it easy a little? Donโ€™t make your cute girlfriend worry so much.โ€

At the school nurseโ€™s wordsโ€ฆ

โ€œL-loverโ€ฆ!?โ€

Kanadeโ€™s face turned bright red.

โ€œโ€ฆHaha. Well then, Iโ€™ll be going.โ€

โ€œO-okay. Take care.โ€

I started walking.

โ€œKanadeโ€ฆ?โ€

But I immediately turned around.

I realized Kanade was still standing frozen in place, her face bright red.

โ€œโ€ฆYeahโ€

โ€œOh, you noticed.โ€

โ€œW-well, letโ€™s head home then, A-kun.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€

We left the infirmary and stepped out into the hallway.

The sky, which had been perfectly clear just a moment ago, was now dyed crimson by the setting sun.

Just like every other day, the sounds of the wind ensemble could be heard drifting from the school building.

โ€œAkkun.โ€

Kanade called out from behind me.

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œSorry. I totally forgot about this, but here.โ€

โ€œHm?โ€

Kanade handed me a smartphone.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHuh?โ€

When I looked closely, it was my smartphone.

โ€ฆโ€ฆWhy on earth does Kanade have my smartphone?

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHehe. It looked like it was about to fall out of your pocket while you were sleeping, so I kept it for you.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆOh, I see. So thatโ€™s what it was.โ€

I let out a sigh of relief, then took the phone from Kanade.

โ€œI was totally sure youโ€™d borrowed it to mess with my phone or something.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHehe.โ€

Well, Kanade wouldnโ€™t do something like that, would she?

โ€œWell, letโ€™s hurry back to the classroom and head home.โ€

My head was still spinning, so I decided to go to bed early today.

โ€ฆThe only thing I was a little worried about was whether my classmates would say anything when I got back to the classroom.

Even though I donโ€™t have any friends in class, if Iโ€™d skipped all my afternoon classes, there was still a chance the classmates who stayed behind might be worried about me.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHuh?โ€

Just as I thought that, there wasnโ€™t a single classmate left in the classroom.

โ€œOh. Come to think of it, didnโ€™t everyone say they were going to a social gathering today?โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆNow that you mention it, I think Kippei-kun said something like that this morning.

โ€œIs that so? โ€ฆโ€ฆI hope theyโ€™re having fun.โ€

โ€œDid you want to go too, A-kun?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHmmโ€ฆโ€

I hesitated for a moment.

โ€œNo, not at all.โ€

But since I didnโ€™t really feel there was any point in bonding with classmates I wasnโ€™t particularly close to, I replied.

โ€œSpeaking of which, was it okay for you, Kanade?โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

โ€œYou were invited too, right? To the get-together.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆYeah.โ€

After accepting that, Kanade smiled.

โ€œI didnโ€™t really care eitherโ€ฆ I just thought itโ€™d be fine as long as I could be with you.โ€

โ€ฆBefore I knew it, I was mesmerized by Kanadeโ€™s smile.

โ€œI see.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆW-well, then, shall we head home?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

We set off for home together.

After we got back, Kanade had dinner at my place, we studied together, and then she went home.

โ€œHuhโ€ฆ?โ€

After walking Kanade to the station, I checked the smartphone in my pocket and was surprised.

Usually, at this time of day, my phone still has plenty of battery left.

But today, it was down to less than ten percent.

Iโ€™d been sleeping most of the afternoon today, so I should have used my phone less than usual.

โ€ฆThatโ€™s strange.
