Episode 50 – Welcome to the Serizawa Family

Mob Character Reincarnation Loner: As a Result of Supporting the Heroine Who Had Been Rejected, I Ended up Being the Recipient of Her Heavy Emotions…

โ€œS-S-Serizawa-san!!โ€

โ€œOh, Bungaku. Youโ€™re early.โ€

After tutoring ended, I rushed over to meet up with Misuzu. Misuzu patted me on the shoulder as I panted for breath.

โ€œCome on, calm down. Want to swing by Starbucks first?โ€

โ€œD-Do we really have time to take it easy like that? โ€

โ€œHmm. Maybe not.โ€

Unlike me, who was panicking, Misuzu was completely calm.

When I found out Iโ€™d been invited to a family meeting, I thought things must be really bad, but surprisingly, that doesnโ€™t seem to be the caseโ€ฆ or is it?

โ€œAnyway, more importantly. Bungaku, did you cheat on me again today?โ€

โ€œHuh? No, I didnโ€™t.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆReally?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆUh, whatโ€™s your definition of cheating?โ€

โ€œHuh? Hmmโ€ฆ If you thought about another girl. I guess.โ€

Thatโ€™s way too broad a definition of cheating.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆI did think about it. About another girl.โ€

Misuzu puffs out her cheeks, looking sulky and displeased.

โ€œCheater, no self-respect. Seppuku is a certainty.โ€

Misuzu protests by patting me gently with both hands. The force of her fists gradually increasesโ€ฆ Ah, wait, that hurts. It really hurts.

โ€œPhew, Iโ€™m satisfied now that we did something couple-like. Well then, letโ€™s go.โ€

I take the right hand Misuzu, who seems satisfied, offers me, and we walk hand-in-hand toward the Serizawa residence.

โ€œUm, why was I called to the Serizawa family meeting today?โ€

When I asked timidly, Misuzu let her gaze drift toward the sky as she fell deep in thought.

โ€œHmm, I wonder why. I donโ€™t know either. Mom and Dad have wanted to meet you for a while, and maybe itโ€™s because theyโ€™re both home today. Itโ€™s rare for the whole Serizawa family to be together.โ€

โ€œOh, I see.โ€

Thatโ€™s a relief. I was worried Iโ€™d done something wrong and thatโ€™s why I was called inโ€ฆ

โ€œOh, butโ€ฆ this morning, while we were eating breakfast, Mom and Dad asked me about you, and when I said, โ€˜Iโ€™m going on a date to the Poop Museum next time,โ€™ they suddenly started asking about your schedule. Maybe that has something to do with it.โ€

Iโ€™ve really messed up.

โ€œHuh? W-wait, you actually said that? That youโ€™re going on a date to the โ€˜Poop Museumโ€™?โ€

โ€œYeah. I bragged that Bungaku asked me out.โ€

What the hell are you doing, Serizawa-san?!

Of course, I suggested the โ€˜Poop Museumโ€™ because I was confident youโ€™d enjoy it, and she seemed really into the idea and happy about it.

However, just as Tsukimi-san said, from an outsiderโ€™s perspective, itโ€™s a shitty choice. At the very least, itโ€™s not the kind of place a couple who just started dating would go to.

Hearing from my beloved daughter that their date spot was the โ€œPoop Museumโ€โ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆ A family meeting is inevitable.

โ€œWell, even if I say โ€˜family meeting,โ€™ itโ€™s just us all having dinner together. You donโ€™t need to be so scared.โ€

โ€œSerizawaโ€ฆ if it comes down to it, Iโ€™m counting on you to put me out of my misery.โ€

โ€œWere you even listening?โ€

Amidst that exchange, we arrived at Serizawaโ€™s house.

Spread out before us was a mansion. The kind of mansion where a major league baseball star or the CEO of a huge corporation might live.

โ€œWelcome to the Serizawa residence.โ€

Wow, itโ€™s huge, so spacious!!

My shitty vocabulary only goes so far, but the entrance hall was way too big, and the wood-burning stove and natural stone and marble gave off a real sense of luxury.

โ€œAnyway, Iโ€™ll show you to the parlor.โ€

No way. Thereโ€™s actually a parlorโ€ฆ in a house.

โ€œAlright, just wait here a moment.โ€

Misuzu said that and left the reception room.

For now, I sat in the corner of the sofa in the room Iโ€™d been shown to.

The cornerโ€ฆ itโ€™s really relaxing.

My moment of relaxation was short-lived, as I heard a steady knock on the door.

โ€œY-yes!โ€

โ€œโ€ฆExcuse me.โ€

The person who came in wasnโ€™t Misuzu, but a woman dressed in a maidโ€™s uniform. Her appearance, with a somewhat mysterious aura, was somehowโ€”

โ€œNice to meet you. I am employed by the Serizawa family. My name is Sanae, the housekeeper.โ€

Oh, a housekeeper. Since sheโ€™s wearing a maidโ€™s uniform, I assumed she was a maid. Wait. A housekeeper is kind of like a maidโ€ฆ isnโ€™t she?

โ€œI heard from Miss Misuzu that she brought her boyfriend over, so I brought some tea.โ€

With somewhat awkward movements, she placed a teacup of green tea and a dorayaki on the table.

Huh, why are there two servingsโ€ฆ?

โ€œPhew.โ€

For some reason, Sanae sat down next to me.

โ€œEh?โ€

โ€œOh, I was just thinking I could use a break myself, so please donโ€™t mind me.โ€

Saying that, Sanae started eating the dorayaki.

Whatโ€™s with this housekeeper? Sheโ€™s way too laid-backโ€ฆ

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆIsnโ€™t it kind of a hassle being around that girl?โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve been working here as a housekeeper for a long time, so I have my own thoughts about her. Sheโ€™s a littleโ€”no, actually, sheโ€™s quite eccentric.โ€

Sanae sips her green tea with a completely expressionless face.

โ€œSo, if you have anything you want to say, any complaints, or things youโ€™d like her to change, please donโ€™t hesitate to tell her. Iโ€™m sure itโ€™ll be for her own good.โ€

Sanaeโ€™s expression remains unchanged. But there was a hint of concern for Misuzu in her tone.

โ€œWell, to begin with, the mistress is a bit of a laissez-faire typeโ€ฆ or rather, sheโ€™s always traveling around the world, so she hasnโ€™t been able to keep a close eye on her, which probably isnโ€™t helping eitherโ€”โ€

โ€œItโ€™s true, I do get run ragged by Misuzu-san quite a bit.โ€

This is probably a question with no right answer. So, just like before, Iโ€™ll tell her exactly what Iโ€™m thinking.

โ€œBut Iโ€™m with her because I like Misuzu-san just the way she is. Besides, being with Misuzu-san is fun, and it makes me smile. Um, so, thatโ€ฆโ€

Oh no, I canโ€™t think of a way to wrap this up.

โ€œIn other words, I want Misuzu-san to stay just the way she is, and I love her exactly as she is.โ€

Howโ€™s that!! I feel like I wrapped it up pretty well!!

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHuh? Why did you suddenly start gushing about your relationshipโ€ฆโ€ฆ?โ€

Sanae-san looks confused as she listens to me.

Uh, waitโ€ฆโ€ฆ? Thatโ€™s not the reaction I was expecting.

โ€œBut, I see. Soโ€ฆ you feel that way about Misuzu, huh?โ€

Sanae stares at me intently, her face expressionless.

Her eyes seem to be sizing me up in some way.

Then, she let out a sudden, almost involuntary laugh and said,

โ€œHuh, just like Misuzu told meโ€”youโ€™re a really interesting guy.โ€

Sheโ€™s starting to sound just like Misuzuโ€ฆ

โ€œOh, you were here.โ€

Misuzuโ€™s voice suddenly rang out from behind me.

When I turned around, I saw Misuzu staring at me with a puzzled expression.

โ€œOh, Misuzuโ€”โ€

โ€œโ€ฆWhat are you doing wearing clothes like that, Mom?โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆMom?

As I glanced nervously at Sanae-san, she gave me a double peace sign with a blank expression.

โ€œHello, Bungaku. Let me introduce myself againโ€”Iโ€™m Misuzuโ€™s mom, Serizawa Sanae. Yay!โ€

โ€œHuh? Huh? Huh?โ€

โ€œBungakuโ€™s totally confused. Thatโ€™s hilarious.โ€

Leaving me behind as my brain struggled to process everything, Serizawa mother and daughter started chatting.

โ€œMom, why are you wearing a maid outfit?โ€

โ€œI guess I wanted to try playing housekeeper. Also, I wanted to talk to you, Bungakuโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWhatโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œMisuzu, your ears are bright red. Eavesdropping isnโ€™t nice, you know?โ€

โ€œ!! S-shut upโ€ฆโ€

โ€œHehe. Misuzuโ€™s face has turned as red as a squid-shaped hot dog.โ€

โ€œ~!! D-Dadโ€™s calling me, so Iโ€™m going. Bungaku!!โ€

โ€œY-yes!!โ€

Called back by Misuzuโ€™s voice, I left the room, following the Serizawa family.
