V8 Episode 3 – Nemesis’s past

The Former Swordmaster Who Pretends to Be the Worst, and the Schoolโ€™s Top-Ranked Chairmanโ€™s Daughter Whoโ€™s Way Too Sweet in Public, Itโ€™s a Real Problem

โ€•โ€•A few days had passed, and preparations for the school festival were gradually picking up steam.

In Class A, where Iโ€™m enrolled, we started by arranging for maid and butler costumes. I didnโ€™t really want to rely on him, but to keep costs down, I ended up asking my dad to introduce me to a cosplay shop he โ€œjust happened to know about.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆUm, Rika. Have you finished taking the girlsโ€™ measurements?โ€

โ€œYeah! โ€ฆAh, but youโ€™re not allowed to look, Saito-kun!โ€

โ€œI said I wonโ€™t look!โ€

My childhood friend is in charge of checking the maid outfit sizes, while Iโ€™m handling the order for the butler outfit. Youโ€™d think something as rough as โ€œsize Sโ€ or โ€œsize Mโ€ would be fine, but that shop insisted on knowing every detailโ€”shoulder width, bust, waist, and hip measurements.

I canโ€™t believe it, but they arenโ€™t planning to make everything by hand, are theyโ€ฆ?

โ€œAlright then, this is the last oneโ€ฆ Ed, time to take your measurements?โ€

โ€œAh, sure thing!โ€

While pondering that, I called out to Edward.

Then, for some reason, the red-haired boy struck a pose that made him look just like a statue. As I shot him a cold stare, he seemed to notice after a few seconds.

Tilting his head slightly, he asked me,

โ€œWhatโ€™s up? Youโ€™re looking at me like Iโ€™m some kind of narcissist.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆAh, good. So youโ€™re still aware of it.โ€

At my reply, he frowned in displeasure.

Still, he finally settled into a normal posture and began taking off his bulky coat. Once I confirmed he was down to just a shirt, I started by measuring his shoulder width.

Next, I moved on to his chest circumference, then his waist.

I naturally moved behind him to do this, but suddenly Edward brought up this topic.

โ€œOh, speaking of which. I hear Nemesis san took care of you, Saito.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHuh? How do you know about Nemesis san?โ€

As I asked this while continuing to take his measurements, he replied:

โ€œOf course I know her. After all, her Necrosia family and my Lihuinburg family are the top two noble houses in Euclid!โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆNoble houses in Euclid?โ€

At that, my hands stopped moving involuntarily.

Edward tried to turn around to see what was wrong, but I kept talking so he wouldnโ€™t notice.

โ€œWowโ€ฆ Is Necro senpaiโ€™s family really that impressive?โ€

โ€œOf course, my family isnโ€™t to be outdone, but theirs is something else. Theyโ€™ve produced many outstanding individuals who hold key positions in the government.โ€

When I asked him, he replied with great enthusiasm.

He probably wasnโ€™t the least bit wary.

Thinking that,

โ€œBy the way, what kind of person is Nemesis sanโ€ฆ?โ€

I pressed a little further and asked that.

Of course, I didnโ€™t expect to get any real information.

โ€œWhat kind of personโ€ฆ? Well, at first glance, sheโ€™s a gentle woman, but sheโ€™s always had this conviction that โ€˜once I decide on something, I wonโ€™t budge.โ€™โ€

โ€œIs that so? For example?โ€

โ€œThere are too many examples to list. Like how she chose the path of a clergyman instead of the path of magic. For her, the teachings of Saint Harmonia are everything.โ€

โ€œThe teachings are everythingโ€ฆ?โ€

Thatโ€™s what I thought, but there was something about the way he said it that stuck with me.

When I asked him about it, Edward spoke as if reminiscing about the past.

โ€œI think sheโ€™s mellowed out now, but back in the day, she was a true fanatic. Sheโ€™d go on and on with such fierce intensity against anyone who went against the teachings of Harmonia.โ€

To be honest, I couldnโ€™t imagine that from the way she acted the other day.

But since this was coming from a boy whoโ€™d known her for a long time, it was probably true, even if he was exaggerating a bit. As I remained silent, Edward continued.

โ€œThat was truly terrifying. Since I wasnโ€™t exactly what youโ€™d call a devout believer myself, I used to go out of my way to avoid meeting Nemesis san. Butโ€”โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆHmm, but?โ€

Then, right in the middle of his sentence, he paused.

When I tilted my head in confusion, he paused for a moment before saying,

โ€œโ€”Well, itโ€™s not a big deal, really. But I think Nemesis san changed after she met โ€˜that person.โ€™โ€

His cryptic tone made me involuntarily furrow my brow.

I hesitated about whether to ask, but it would have been awkward to stop now that weโ€™d come this far.

โ€œWho is this โ€˜that personโ€™?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry. Actually, I donโ€™t know the details myself.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆWhatโ€™s that supposed to mean?โ€

โ€œWhat can I say? I only heard it from her, after all.โ€

Even so, Edward racked his brain as best he could and said this.

The โ€œthat personโ€ who changed Nemesis wasโ€”

โ€œI heard it was a โ€˜Japanese personโ€™ she met by chance.โ€โ€”he said.

But that kind of information wasnโ€™t much of a clue.

In fact, the only useful thing was that Nemesis and her group were from Euclid. Iโ€™d listened intently, but it might have been nothing more than small talk.

I slumped my shoulders at that realization and finished taking Edwardโ€™s measurements for the time being.

โ€œBut Saito, you seem strangely interested in Nemesis san, donโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHmm, is that so?โ€

Then, having been released, he said that while getting dressed.

And then,

โ€œI guess this means Agatsuma san canโ€™t afford to be careless either, huh?โ€

He actually went and said something so ridiculous.

I sighed at Edwardโ€™s tone before answering.

โ€œYou idiotโ€”โ€

It came out so naturally.

โ€œNothing else compares to Rika,โ€ I said.

Iโ€™d let my guard down completely, and the words just slipped out.

โ€œHoh-ohโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆAh.โ€

Immediately afterward, I blushed as I realized what Iโ€™d saidโ€ฆ
