Episode 22 – Prayer for Good Health

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

โ€œPhew, that was delicious.โ€

After having a light meal at the cafรฉ, we left the shop and headed for the station.

โ€œAkkun, Iโ€™m really sorry.โ€

Kanade has been like this ever since what happened this morning.

โ€œReally, itโ€™s okay.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆIโ€™m sorry.โ€

I gave a wry smile.

I suspect Kanade will probably stay like this for a while.

โ€œOh, right. Since we’re out and about, why don’t we stop by somewhere else before we go buy a present for Takagaki-san?โ€

It felt a little awkward to head out on a present-buying trip with Kanade in this state.

Thinking that, I made the suggestion, hoping it might cheer her up a bit.

โ€œโ€ฆWhere exactly?โ€

โ€œEh?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆWhere are we going?โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆWell, where should we go?

Unfortunately, in my entire lifeโ€ฆ Iโ€™ve never actually been on what youโ€™d call a date with the opposite sex. In situations like this, I have absolutely no idea where to take a partner.

In times like this, it might be a good idea to take your partner somewhere you go often.

Speaking of places I go oftenโ€ฆ the airport.

No good.

I already went there with Kanade the other day.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆAkkun?โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s just get on the train for now.โ€

I guess I have no choice.

Since thatโ€™s the case, Iโ€™ll think about where to go while weโ€™re on the train.

We got on the train and began a date with no particular destination in mind.

โ€œBy the way, what were you planning to give Takagaki-san as a present, Kanade?โ€

Hoping it might give me some kind of hint, I asked her on the train.

โ€œHm? Hmm. I hadnโ€™t really decided on anything specific.โ€

โ€œEhโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œI was thinking of going somewhere with you, and if I found something nice there, Iโ€™d buy that.โ€

โ€ฆI see.

It seems I wasnโ€™t the only one winging it.

โ€œSo, where should we go?โ€

โ€œHmmโ€ฆโ€

I folded my arms and groaned.

While I was pondering, the train moved on, passing one station, then anotherโ€ฆ

โ€œNext stopโ€”โ€

When I heard the station name announced over the intercom, it hit me.

โ€œKanade, letโ€™s get off at the next stop.โ€

And with that, I stood up.

We got off the train and stepped onto the subway platform. We went up to street level and walked for a few minutes.

โ€œIs thisโ€ฆโ€

โ€œA shrine.โ€

The place weโ€™d arrived at was a famous shrine, even within Tokyo.

โ€œIโ€™ve always wanted to come here,โ€

Kanade said excitedly, standing in front of the vermilion-colored lanterns.

โ€œDo you come here often, Akkun?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œAkkun?โ€

โ€œHuh? Oh. โ€ฆEvery now and then.โ€

I gave a wry smile and made my way into the shrine grounds, dodging the crowds.

Once past the lanterns, there were many shops lined up in front of the main hall. Seeing the tourists gazing at the merchandise with such curiosity made me feel a little fed up.

โ€œItโ€™sโ€ฆ pretty crowded in here.โ€

โ€œYeah. Donโ€™t get separated from me, okay?โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€

This street was constantly congested, with customers buying goods, others just browsing, and still others just window-shopping, all slowing down the flow of people.

Kanade and I were desperate just to stay together until we reached the main hall.

โ€ฆBut.

โ€œKanade, are you okay? Are you still with me?โ€

When I didnโ€™t hear Kanadeโ€™s reply from behind, I panicked and turned around.

โ€œSheโ€™s not hereโ€ฆโ€

It seemed we had, indeed, lost each other.

[Sorry. Do you know where you are right now?]

I sent Kanade a message on my phone.

[I donโ€™t knowโ€ฆ]

The message Kanade sent back was accompanied by a crying emoji.

[Can you see the main hall?]

[Yeah]

[Itโ€™ll be a pain to find each other in this crowd, so letโ€™s meet up at the main hall.]

[Got it]

โ€ฆโ€ฆWill she be okay?

I was a little worried, but since Kanade had included a thumbs-up emoji, I figured sheโ€™d be fine.

..That said, I was really looking forward to buying something together at the shop.

Well, I guess we can do that on the way back.

I made my way toward the main hall, dodging the crowds.

โ€œWow, the main hall is packed with people too.โ€

This isโ€ฆ Itโ€™s going to be a real pain to meet up with Kanade.

โ€œAkkun.โ€

โ€œWhoa!โ€

Just as I thought that, a familiar voice suddenly rang out from behind me, and I jumped.

When I turned around, there was Kanade.

โ€œโ€ฆKanade, how did you know I was here?โ€

โ€œOh. Wellโ€ฆโ€

Kanade, holding her smartphone, started to say somethingโ€ฆ then clammed up.

โ€œItโ€™s fate, isnโ€™t it?โ€

There it is.

Ever since we reunited, Kanade has been using โ€œfateโ€ as her go-to catchphrase.

Every time she throws the word โ€œfateโ€ around, I feel like telling her itโ€™s more of an inevitable outcome than actual fateโ€ฆ

Well, in this case, since we ran into each other in the middle of this crowd, maybe I could call itโ€ฆ fate?

Is it just my imagination, or is there something a little off about this?

โ€œR-right. A-A-kun, letโ€™s buy some amulets.โ€

As if trying to cover something up, Kanade suggested.

โ€œL-look, there are ones for warding off misfortune, granting wishes, and even traffic safety.โ€

โ€œYeah, youโ€™re right.โ€

โ€œThey sell all kinds of different amulets here, donโ€™t they?โ€

โ€œYeah. There are even ones for good health.โ€

Well, I guess itโ€™d be rare to find a shrine that doesnโ€™t sell amulets for good health.

โ€œHuh. Since thatโ€™s the first thing you mentioned, Akkunโ€ฆ do you often buy amulets for good health at this shrine?โ€

I widened my eyes and clamped my mouth shut.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆOh, did I hit the nail on the head?โ€

I didnโ€™t answer.

โ€œHmm. โ€ฆFor yourself?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆNo.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHmm.โ€

I felt like Kanadeโ€™s tone had dropped.

โ€œThen, who were you buying them for?โ€

Kanadeโ€™s cold voice and gazeโ€ฆ hurt a little.

โ€œItโ€™s for you.โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆI just hoped youโ€™d be doing well in France. I hoped weโ€™d meet again someday. I was buying it while thinking about things like that.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆYou were buying it?โ€

โ€œYeah. Every year.โ€

โ€ฆActually, Iโ€™ve bought amulets for good health from most of the famous shrines at least once.

Among them, this shrine is not only famous but also just one train ride away, so it was easy to buy one there.

Thatโ€™s exactly why, just before we reached the station closest to the shrine, the idea of going there together even came up in the first place.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆBut I never thought it would actually work.โ€

โ€œWas that a surprise?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not really the type to rely on spiritual stuffโ€ฆ generally speaking.โ€

โ€œI see. โ€ฆGenerally speaking, huh.โ€

Kanade headed toward the gift shop.

And it looks like she bought something.

โ€œAkkun.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œMe too. Iโ€™m not the type to believe in spiritual stuff.โ€

โ€œIs that so?โ€

โ€œYeah. โ€ฆThere was a time when my parents, seeing that my condition wasnโ€™t improving at all, started saying we couldnโ€™t rely on modern medicine. They even made donations to a new religious group and seemed to be leaning toward that sort of thing for a whileโ€ฆโ€

โ€œHuhโ€ฆโ€

Is that so?

โ€œI only found out right before I returned to Japan, though. Both my parents were laughing, saying, โ€˜If it saves your life, a few hundred thousand yen is a small price to payโ€™โ€ฆ It was complicated.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆI see.โ€

โ€œWell, in the end, it didnโ€™t work, so they stopped, I guess.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆSo, you basically proved it through your own experience.โ€

โ€œPretty impressive, right?โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆ

โ€œThatโ€™s why I donโ€™t believe in spiritual stuff either. But if you say you believe in the power of this shrineโ€ฆ I thought Iโ€™d try believing in it too.โ€

Kanade smiled and handed me the charm.

โ€œTake it, A-kun.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆIs that okay?โ€

โ€œYep.โ€

The charm Kanade gave me wasโ€ฆ

โ€œAcademic Success Amuletโ€

I felt a slight sting in the corners of my eyes.

โ€œOh. But, Akkun. Donโ€™t get the wrong idea, okay?โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

โ€œI still havenโ€™tโ€ฆ given up on making you lower your goals.โ€

I gave a wry smile at Kanadeโ€™s declaration of war.
