Episode 41 – as if it were only natural

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

The first weekday after the party at Kanadeโ€™s house.

I woke up, yawning.

โ€œAaaahโ€ฆโ€

Yesterday, just as weโ€™d agreed, Kanade came over to my place, and we ended up studying.

We studied for about three hours. She arrived just after noon and went home just before evening.

โ€œAkkun. Akkun. Thereโ€™s a problem I donโ€™t understand. Can you help me?โ€

However, even after she went home, we continued to study at each otherโ€™s houses.

During that time, whenever Kanade encountered a problem she didnโ€™t understand, she would call me to ask how to solve it.

Our calls with Kanade ended up being several five-minute conversations.

I said โ€œseveral,โ€ but I donโ€™t remember the exact number.

Thatโ€™s because after a five-minute call, five minutes would pass, and Kanade would call again.

โ€ฆIf she was going to call that many times, she should have just stayed over at my place.

Thinking that to myself, I taught her how to solve the problems while also working hard on my own studies.

โ€œAkkun. Akkun. Itโ€™s hard to understand over the phone, so why donโ€™t we switch to a video call?โ€

Kanadeโ€™s demands knew no bounds.

At first, I was reluctantโ€ฆ

โ€œAkkun. Is there someone else in your room?โ€

And things like that.

โ€œโ€ฆIf there isnโ€™t, then itโ€™s no problem, right? Or is there something you donโ€™t want me to see on a video call?โ€

And things like that.

Anyway, overwhelmed by Kanadeโ€™s pressure over the phone, I ended up talking to her on a video call for about three hours.

โ€œAkkun. Are you sleepy already? Should I sing you a lullaby?โ€

By the end, Kanade was even taking care of me as I was overcome by drowsiness.

Honestlyโ€ฆ I felt nothing but sorry, but anyway, because of that study session with Kanade, I was a bit sleep-deprived today.

โ€œGood morning, A-kun.โ€

โ€œGood morning, Kanade.โ€

When I went into the living room, Kanade was eating breakfast.

โ€œA-kun. You look really sleepy.โ€

Once again, Kanade was worried about how I was feeling.

โ€œDid you stay up for a while after that call yesterday?โ€

โ€œNope. I went to sleep right away.โ€

โ€œHmmโ€ฆโ€

I felt Kanadeโ€™s intense gaze on me, but I rubbed my sleepy eyes and sat down next to her.

โ€œAtsushi. What do you want for breakfast?โ€

โ€œHmm. Anythingโ€™s fine.โ€

โ€œAtsushi. โ€˜Anythingโ€™s fineโ€™ is the hardest thing to deal with. You have to tell me what you actually want to eat.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s right, thatโ€™s right.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆAlright then, rice with raw egg.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€

I yawned again.

โ€œโ€ฆAkkun. Did you even like rice with raw egg?โ€

Kanade, sitting next to me, asked.

โ€œHm? Hmm. I donโ€™t hate it, I guess?โ€

โ€œSo, you donโ€™t really like it either?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆIf I had to say whether I like it or not, I guess I like it.โ€

โ€œI see.โ€

โ€ฆWhat on earth was the point of that?

โ€œKanadeโ€ฆโ€

Just as I was about to ask Kanade why sheโ€™d been grilling me about raw egg on riceโ€ฆ

โ€œAuntie. How do you make raw egg on rice?โ€

Kanade had already headed for the kitchen.

โ€ฆFeeling a slight sense of exclusion, I turned on the TV and stared blankly at the morning news program.

โ€œAkkunโ€

Kanade called out to me from the kitchen.

โ€œAkkun, you always watch that news show in the morning, donโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œHuh? โ€ฆOh. I guess so.โ€

I hadnโ€™t really given it much thought; I just watch it because thatโ€™s the show that comes on when I turn on the TV in the morning.

Thereโ€™s nothing particularly deep or thought-provoking about it.

โ€œโ€ฆAkkun, do you happen to have a thing for people like the anchor on that show?โ€

Just then, on TV, the station announcer appearing on the news program flashed a smile that seemed designed to captivate viewers.

โ€œNah, sheโ€™s not really my type.โ€

โ€œHmm. Why not?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆI donโ€™t know, it just feels like a fake smile. Calculated, I guess. Superficial. I get the sense thereโ€™s something hidden behind her.โ€

I gave a wry smile.

โ€œThatโ€™s a far cry from you, whoโ€™s so genuine.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆAfter a brief silence,

โ€œOh, Mouu. Akun, what are you saying? Seriously.โ€

Kanade was wriggling her body happily.

โ€œItโ€™s fine for you two to be all lovey-dovey, but you really need to get out of the house soon. Youโ€™re going to be late.โ€

Hearing my motherโ€™s voice, my sleep-fogged mind finally cleared.

โ€œOh no. We have to hurry.โ€

I scrambled to my feet and quickly got ready for school.

โ€œWell then, weโ€™re off.โ€

โ€œSee you later, Auntie.โ€

โ€œOkay. Have a good day.โ€

We waved to my mom, who had come to see us off at the front door, and left the house.

We walked to the station, saw the station building come into view, and boarded the trainโ€ฆ

โ€œWait a minute.โ€

Just as I grabbed the overhead strap, it hit me.

โ€œKanade, did you actually stay over at my place last night?โ€

โ€œHahaha. A-kun, what are you talking about? We talked on the phone so much yesterday. Of course I went home.โ€

Oh, right.

If she had been at my place, there would have been absolutely no need to talk on the phone.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHuh? Then why were you at my place?โ€

โ€œWhy, you askโ€ฆโ€ฆ Haha. Youโ€™re saying such funny things, A-kun.โ€

Kanade was smiling.

โ€œI just came to see you, A-kun.โ€

If thatโ€™s the caseโ€ฆโ€ฆ then it wouldnโ€™t have mattered if weโ€™d met at school.

Perhaps sheโ€™d seen the look of confusion on my face, because there was no sparkle in Kanadeโ€™s eyes.ใ€€
