Episode 48 – Otaku

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

After meeting up with Takagaki, we decided to grab an early lunch first.

The airport we visited had a food court accessible via escalator from the departure level. The restaurants there were a bit pricey for high school students like us, butโ€ฆ well, we all decided to just accept it as part of the experience.

โ€œSeriously? This is all I get for this price?โ€

Actually, we hadnโ€™t accepted it at all.

Especially Takagaki-san. Sheโ€™s usually very particular about ethicsโ€ฆ but apparently, when money is involved, sheโ€™s a different person.

โ€œWell, restaurants inside airports basically cater to people with foreign currency. With the yen getting weaker, this is just a natural result.โ€

โ€œTch. Politicians really canโ€™t be trusted.โ€

As always, Takagaki-sanโ€™s insults are sharp.

โ€œโ€ฆIf the food hadnโ€™t been a little tastier, I wouldโ€™ve given it one star in my review.โ€

Perhaps because the food was delicious, her dissatisfaction seemed to have lessened somewhat.

โ€œAkkun. Akkun.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œSo, what are our plans from here on out?โ€

Just as we finished eating and were enjoying a quiet moment after the meal, Kanade asked me.

โ€œExactly. Making us eat lunch the moment we arrived at the airportโ€ฆ If you try to say this was all unplanned, Iโ€™ll get mad.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆAyaka-chan is going to get mad at A-kun?โ€

โ€œThe pressure is intenseโ€ฆโ€

Takagaki-san was cowering under Kanadeโ€™s smile.

โ€œHahaha. Itโ€™s okay. Iโ€™ve got a plan all worked out.โ€

โ€œI hope so.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆHmm. โ€œWell then, I guess Iโ€™ll explain things right here.โ€

I took a few sheets of A4 paper out of my bag and spread them out on the table.

โ€œโ€ฆW-what is this?โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean? Itโ€™s reference material for todayโ€™s photo shoot.โ€

I handed the printouts to Takagaki-san.

The printouts contained details on the wrapped airplane she wanted to photograph, a runway map of this airport, And the hourly weather forecast for today.

โ€œFirst off, todayโ€™s subject is, of course, this plane. Theyโ€™ve been operating these wrapped planes in partnership with a certain famous IP and various airlines for quite some time now, and this is the latest version.โ€

โ€œHuh.โ€

โ€œThis plane is headed to New Chitose. Since itโ€™s a domestic flight, weโ€™ll need to move to a different terminal first.โ€

โ€œWait, canโ€™t we just take photos in this building?โ€

Takagaki-san looked a little surprised.

โ€œYeah. Itโ€™s the building over there.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆHuh? Then why did we meet at this terminal?โ€

Wellโ€ฆ

Takagaki-san and I glanced at Kanade.

โ€œโ€ฆSorry. I really wanted to stop by here.โ€

Kanade looked apologetic.

โ€œWellโ€ฆ I guess itโ€™s just the right amount of exercise after a meal, donโ€™t you think?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆLetโ€™s just go with that.โ€

I handed Takagaki-san the next printout.

โ€œThis is a diagram of the runways at this airport. Since theโ€™re flying to New Chitose, theyโ€™ll probably use this runway.โ€

I had already marked the runway where the plane was scheduled to take off with a highlighter.

โ€œAnd this runway can be seen in its entirety from the sixth-floor observation deck of this terminal.โ€

โ€œHmm, hmm.โ€

โ€œThe departure time is 12:20, so weโ€™ll probably take the photo around 12:30. The weather at that time will be clear and sunny. Those are pretty much ideal conditions.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆSo weโ€™re not taking the photo at the departure time?โ€

โ€œThe departure time refers to when the plane leaves the gate and starts moving. It wonโ€™t enter the runway until later than that. Plus, runways get pretty crowded during the day, so the takeoff might actually be a little later.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re creepy how detailed you are.โ€

โ€œSo, if weโ€™re taking a photoโ€ฆ the composition youโ€™d want is the plane taking off into the sky, right? But actually, that shot is pretty hard to get. After all, the subject is moving at breakneck speed.โ€

โ€œT-trueโ€ฆโ€

โ€œThereโ€™s a handy item for thatโ€ฆโ€

I pulled the thing out of my bag with a smug look on my face.

โ€œโ€ฆHeh. This.โ€

I felt a little relieved to finally be able to bring out into the light the thing that had been weighing heavily on my shoulder during the trip.

โ€œโ€ฆA camera.โ€

โ€œNo. A DSLR.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆHuh?โ€

โ€œAnd it comes with a telephoto lens.โ€

โ€œWhoaโ€ฆโ€

โ€œThis lens was expensive. It cost 200,000 yen, after all.โ€

โ€œWhere did you get that kind of money?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆHeh.โ€

I put on a smug look.

โ€œI begged my parents for it.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆDonโ€™t suddenly go back to acting like a kid.โ€

โ€œThey said it was okay because, for a kid our age, Iโ€™m studying hard and seem serious about it.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s why youโ€™re acting like a kidโ€ฆโ€

โ€œThey bought it for me, hoping that my hobby of photography would help me make some friendsโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWhoa, I just dug up a tragic past out of nowhereโ€ฆ!โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆDonโ€™t call it tragic. It makes me sad, you know?

โ€œAkkun. Akkun. Well then, Iโ€™ll join you in your hobby too.โ€

โ€œKaโ€ฆ Kanadeโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œYeah. Letโ€™s have fun togetherโ€”taking pictures.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆKaโ€ฆ Kanadeโ€ฆโ€

โ€œAh, the atmosphere just got weird again. Seriously.โ€

Takagaki-san looked exasperated.

โ€œAnywayโ€ฆ Hagiwara-kun, thanks.โ€

Takagaki-san thanked me, looking a bit embarrassed.

โ€œโ€ฆAsking you was definitely the right choice.โ€

Thatโ€™s actually quite a nice thing to say.

โ€œA-alright then, letโ€™s head out soon! Weโ€™ve got to find the best spots for taking photos!โ€

Kanade and I watched Takagakiโ€™s back as she stood up and headed to pay the bill.

โ€œHey, A-kun.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œTakagaki really isโ€ฆ a tsundere, isnโ€™t she?โ€

โ€œYeah, I guess so.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s cute.โ€

โ€œYeah, I guess so.โ€

โ€ฆSuddenly, Kanade snapped her head around and stared at me with her lifeless eyes.
