Episode 50 – Perhaps

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

โ€œAkkun. Which way is the observation deck?โ€

โ€œThis way.โ€

After getting off the shuttle bus, I led Kanade and Takagaki-san through the terminal.

Unlike the international terminal weโ€™d just been in, the domestic terminal had fewer foreign travelers. However, perhaps because some people use this airport as a starting point for domestic sightseeing, I wouldnโ€™t say there were none at all.

โ€œI donโ€™t know how to put it, but the atmosphere is totally different from the international terminal.โ€

โ€œYeah. Unlike over there, this place feels pretty crowded, doesnโ€™t it?โ€

There were souvenir shops near the departure gates, and it actually reminded me a bit of a Shinkansen platform.

โ€œWow, theyโ€™re selling all kinds of souvenirs here.โ€

โ€œKanade, letโ€™s wait until weโ€™re on our way back to buy souvenirs.โ€

โ€œWhat should I eat? What should I eat?โ€

I didnโ€™t ask for your opinion.

โ€œโ€ฆHagiwara, hurry up and bring that girl over here.โ€

โ€œEh? Why me?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆBecause I think sheโ€™ll do anything you ask.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€

โ€œHahaha. Like that would ever happen.โ€

โ€œJust do it already!โ€

โ€ฆShe got mad at me.

Damn it.

Itโ€™s obviously impossibleโ€ฆ Takagaki-san is surprisingly good at giving unreasonable requests.

โ€œKanadeโ€

I called out to Kanade, who was browsing the goods at the souvenir shop.

โ€œShould we head out soon?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆEh? I want to look around a little longer.โ€

See? I knew it wouldnโ€™t work.

โ€ฆWell, I guess thereโ€™s no helping it now.

โ€œAlright. Just wait here for a sec, then.โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

โ€œWhile youโ€™re looking at souvenirs, Takagaki-san and I are going to go take some pictures of the plane. Just wait here until we get back.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆHuh?โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆHey, A-kun.โ€

Kanade continued, still with her back turned to me.

โ€œSo that meansโ€ฆ Akkun and Ayaka-chan will be alone together?โ€

โ€œWell, I guess so.โ€

โ€œI see.โ€

Kanade put the souvenirs back on the shelf and turned on her heel.

โ€œCome on, Akkun! How long do you plan on loafing around here!?โ€

Thatโ€™s you, isnโ€™t it?

โ€œโ€ฆWell, letโ€™s go.โ€

โ€œYeah. Hurry up! Letโ€™s go! We can buy souvenirs on the way back anyway!โ€

That was exactly what I said a moment agoโ€ฆ

โ€œSee? If you say it, sheโ€™ll do anything, wonโ€™t she?โ€

When the two of us returned to Takagaki-san, she gave us a defiant smile.

โ€œThatโ€™s true. โ€ฆI wonder why?โ€

โ€œProbably because even in a situation like this, you still canโ€™t figure out the reason, just like you are now?โ€

Haha. โ€ฆSo, what does that mean?

After that little exchange, the three of us headed to the terminalโ€™s observation deck, with me leading the way.

โ€œItโ€™s hot.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s outdoors, after all.โ€

A clear, midsummer day.

Outdoors.

And since there was little shade on the observation deckโ€ฆ especially in front of the railing, which is a popular spot for taking photos, there really wasnโ€™t a single patch of shade.

โ€œโ€ฆTwenty minutes until takeoff.โ€

Glancing at her watch, Takagaki-san said in a weary tone.

โ€œThis isโ€ฆ rough.โ€

โ€œYeah. โ€ฆThe plane is over there, though.โ€

Boarding would likely start soon; the wrapped plane in question was already at the airport, ready for loading.

Having spotted the plane first, I pointed it out to them.

โ€œIs that it?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s huge.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s kind of moving to see the actual plane I saw on the news in person.โ€

โ€œYeah, it is.โ€

After sharing their thoughts, the two of them started taking pictures with their smartphones.

โ€œShould we wait inside for now?โ€

After watching them take their photos, I said.

โ€œItโ€™d be pretty rough to wait thirty minutes out here in this weather, wouldnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆYouโ€™re right.โ€

Kanade agreed.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

Takagaki, on the other hand, said nothing.

โ€œYou two wait inside. Iโ€™ll wait over here.โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t want someone to steal the best spot for taking photos.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œHagiwara, whereโ€™s the best spot?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆOver there.โ€

โ€œGot it. Then Iโ€™ll meet up with you later.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆNo.โ€

Kanade shook her head.

โ€œWeโ€™ll be waiting outside too.โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

โ€œRight, Akkun?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œAkkun?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆYeah.โ€

It didnโ€™t feel like the kind of situation where I could refuse, so I reluctantly nodded.

Then we bought drinks from the vending machine on the observation deck and decided to wait for the moment the plane took off.

โ€œAkkun. What have you been looking at on your phone this whole time?โ€

โ€œFlightRadar.โ€

Itโ€™s an app that shows the real-time locations of commercial aircraft.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆYou really do love airplanes, donโ€™t you?โ€

Takagaki-san looked exasperatedโ€ฆ no, actually, she seemed a little impressed.

โ€œYeah. Thanks to Kanade.โ€

โ€œIchinose-san?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆYeah.โ€

It felt too embarrassing to say more, so I decided to keep it to myself.

โ€œYou two really are close, arenโ€™t you?โ€

Under the blazing sun, with large beads of sweat on her forehead, Takagaki-san said in a pensive tone.

โ€œโ€ฆIs that because youโ€™ve both experienced a separation that felt like death?โ€

At Takagaki-sanโ€™s blunt, unfiltered remark, Kanade and I exchanged glances.

โ€œNo. I donโ€™t think so.โ€

It was Kanade who denied it.

โ€œThe reason Akun and I get along so wellโ€ฆ is because itโ€™s fate.โ€

โ€ฆThere it was. Fate.

โ€œI see. Fate, huh.โ€

Takagaki smiled.

โ€œโ€ฆIf you say that the two of you meeting was fate, then I suppose having a troublesome little brother like me was fate, too.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s right. It must be.โ€

Takagaki-san didnโ€™t respond to Kanadeโ€™s agreement.

With a roar echoing from the distance, an airplane touched down on the ground.

With white smoke billowing from its tires, the plane slowly slowed to a stop.

โ€œโ€ฆabout to move.โ€

I said.

โ€œAre they taking off right away?โ€

โ€œNo. First, taxi to the runway to take off. Look, over there. See how the planes are lined up? Theyโ€™re all waiting to take off.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHuh.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆTiming-wise, I think two or three more planes will join that line before the wrapped one.โ€

โ€œSoโ€ฆ takeoff is still a while away?โ€

โ€œProbably about fifteen minutes from now.โ€

Takagaki wiped the sweat from her forehead with a handkerchief.

It seemed that as she wiped her sweat, a little foundation had transferred onto the handkerchief.

I felt a deep sense of sympathy for women during the summer.

โ€œItโ€™s so hot.โ€

Kanade pressed the bottle of water sheโ€™d bought against her forehead and slumped over.

โ€œAre you okay?โ€

โ€œI think Iโ€™d feel cooler if you hugged me, A-kun.โ€

โ€œThat would probably just make you hotter.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆThat would be fun in its own way.โ€

Kanade is as full of energy as ever.

โ€œโ€ฆHehe.โ€

It was a tiny, tiny chuckle.

So small that if I hadnโ€™t been paying attention, it would have been easily drowned out by the roar of the planeโ€ฆ a tiny, tiny chuckle.

The person who let out that chuckle, which I happened to catch, was Takagaki-san.

Takagaki-san was always exasperated by the pointless conversations Kanade and I had.

In other wordsโ€ฆ this was the first time sheโ€™d ever laughed at us.

โ€œI used to think your banter was just a bunch of nonsense, but now it actually cheers me up a little.โ€

โ€ฆStill, the fact that she laughed wasnโ€™t exactly something to be particularly happy about.

It wasnโ€™t something to be ashamed ofโ€ฆ probably not.

More than thatโ€ฆ

โ€œI wonder when itโ€™ll take off.โ€

I felt a slight sense of unease in my chest.

โ€œHagiwara, you take the photos, okay?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆAh, yeah.โ€

Soon, the wrapped airplane taxied onto the runway, and I raised my camera.

The plane began to roar as it prepared for takeoffโ€ฆ

โ€œโ€ฆWhoa.โ€

Just as the plane began to accelerate, Takagaki let out a gasp of admiration.

I kept snapping photos using my cameraโ€™s burst mode.

โ€œHaha. Itโ€™s flying, itโ€™s flying!โ€

The moment the plane lifted off the ground, Takagaki began clapping.

โ€œโ€ฆI hope he gets well soon.โ€

โ€ฆHearing Takagaki-sanโ€™s whisper, which sounded as if it might vanish at any moment, I finally realized.

This morning, I had speculated that Kanadeโ€ฆ that Takagaki-san would bring her younger brother along.

The reason for that wasโ€ฆ if her younger brother said he wanted to see the wrapped airplane, I figured heโ€™d want to see the real thing rather than just a photo.

In reality, viewing the plane isnโ€™t particularly difficult.

For a child whoโ€™s just started elementary schoolโ€”or even youngerโ€”to come aloneโ€ฆ well, aside from an idiot like me, thatโ€™s not something many would do, but in this case, with Takagaki there to supervise, it shouldnโ€™t have been a problem.

But Takagaki didnโ€™t bring her younger brother; she came alone.

โ€ฆAnd hearing her words just now, I realized why.

That melancholy tone in her voiceโ€ฆ it sounded familiar, and I realized it.

โ€œโ€ฆHagiwara, did you get the photos?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆHagiwara?โ€

โ€œOh, yeah. I got them. Want to see?โ€

โ€œYeah. Show me.โ€

โ€ฆTakagaki, could it be that your little brotherโ€ฆ
