Episode 64 – No problem

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

โ€œYeah. Sure.โ€

After thinking for a moment, I replied.

โ€œOh, really? Is that okay?โ€

โ€œYeah. No problem.โ€

I was a little flustered at firstโ€ฆ but when I thought about it calmly, I realized there wasnโ€™t really a problem.

โ€œThatโ€™s a bit surprising. Akkunโ€™s reaction just now, too. When I mentioned before that I was putting on a recital for Kanade, you looked a little displeased. I thought youโ€™d be reluctant to get involved yourself.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆWell, itโ€™s true that I donโ€™t really feel great about being put on display.โ€

I looked down.

โ€œButโ€ฆโ€ฆif being put on display here here helps improve Auntieโ€™s and Kanadeโ€™s financial situation, then itโ€™s no big deal for me to be the attraction.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆOh my.โ€

โ€œIf anythingโ€ฆ Iโ€™m actually a little happy about it. The old me couldnโ€™t do anything for Kanade. If I can do something to help cover her medical billsโ€ฆ it makes me feel like it was all worth it.โ€

โ€œOh myโ€”โ€

โ€œโ€ฆI can tell myself that I was able to do something for her, after all.โ€

โ€œOh my, oh myโ€”โ€

Kanadeโ€™s mother was beaming with the widest smile sheโ€™d shown all day.

โ€œAkkun. Hehehe. Akkun.โ€

โ€œYes. What is it?โ€

โ€œYou really areโ€ฆ the best.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆ? Iโ€™m not quite sure what you mean, but thank you.โ€

I went ahead and thanked her, just in case.

โ€œWell then, Akkun. May I go ahead and start the interview right away?โ€

โ€œBefore that, thereโ€™s something Iโ€™d like to confirm.โ€

โ€œWhat? Oh, are you talking about the honorarium? If thatโ€™s itโ€ฆโ€

โ€œNo, thatโ€™s not it.โ€

I smiled.

โ€œWhen are you planning to release your next book? Thatโ€™s all Iโ€™d like to confirm.โ€

โ€œMy next book? โ€ฆLetโ€™s see. Research. Writing. Proofreading. Taking all that into account, probably in about half a year.โ€

โ€œCanโ€™t you get it out sooner?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆHm?โ€

โ€œThese days, content is consumed faster than ever. The popularity of this book will fade in the blink of an eye, and readers will move on to another bookโ€”or some other form of entertainment. Thatโ€™s why we canโ€™t afford to miss the window of opportunity. If we wait six months, the book will be past its prime.โ€

โ€œHuhโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œSo, specificallyโ€ฆ letโ€™s aim to have the next book ready for release in three months.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆHehehe.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll help with both the research and the writing. Soโ€ฆ canโ€™t we somehow get the next book out sooner? Itโ€™s all for Kanadeโ€™s sakeโ€ฆโ€

โ€œHeheheheโ€ฆโ€

Kanadeโ€™s motherโ€ฆ was smiling.

โ€œWell, letโ€™s work out the timeline from here, shall we?โ€

Kanadeโ€™s mother proposed a compromiseโ€ฆ or rather, she tried to put off the issue.

Personally, I thought this issue should be resolved right awayโ€ฆ but I wanted to avoid getting bogged down in back-and-forth haggling over the release date and wasting time, soโ€”even though I was anxiousโ€”I decided to nod in agreement.

โ€œWell then, letโ€™s get started with the interviewโ€ฆโ€

โ€œMom!โ€

Just as I was about to begin the interview with Kanadeโ€™s mother, Kanade rushed out of her room in a panic.

โ€œโ€ฆSo youโ€™re already awake, huh?โ€

Kanadeโ€™s mother muttered regretfully.

โ€œMoou! What did you put in my tea!?โ€

Kanade was clearly furious.

โ€œHehe. I didnโ€™t put anything in it, though?โ€

โ€œLiar! Liar! Youโ€™re definitely lying!โ€

โ€œOh my, well then, do you have any proof or something?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆMmmph.โ€

After glaring at her own mother, Kanade looked at me with concern.

โ€œA-kun. Are you okay? Do you feel sick?โ€

โ€œHuh? Iโ€™m fine, thoughโ€ฆโ€

โ€œReally? Youโ€™re not feeling drowsy? You donโ€™t suddenly feel like spilling your true feelings? Your heart isnโ€™t racing so hard that you want to pounce on me?โ€

โ€œHahaha. Itโ€™s as if someone slipped me a drug or something.โ€

I laughed.

โ€ฆKanade looked away, looking awkward.

โ€œHehehe. Hehehehehe.โ€

Kanadeโ€™s mother was smiling suspiciously.

โ€œโ€ฆMom!โ€

Kanade glared at her mother once more.

โ€œI wonโ€™t let you get away with this one! I absolutely wonโ€™t!โ€

โ€œOh my. I wonder what Kanade is so angry about? I have absolutely no idea.โ€

โ€œActing all innocent wonโ€™t work!โ€

โ€œHehe. So? What exactly are you going to do to me?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s obvious, isnโ€™t it!โ€

Kanade crossed her arms.

โ€œIโ€™m going to tell Dad!โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆIs that it?

If thatโ€™s all sheโ€™s gotโ€ฆ even aunt wouldnโ€™t be fazed by that.

โ€œW-w-wait a minute, Kanade. Dadโ€™s not involved in this.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆShe was totally flustered.
