Episode 7 – Summer Vacation Overwrite 3

I Thought She Was the One, but It Turned Out to Be a Fake Confession, so I Decided to Break Up With Her

โ€œKotone, just because itโ€™s summer vacationโ€”no, precisely because itโ€™s summer vacationโ€”you must never let your guard down.โ€

โ€œYes, Mother.โ€

โ€œIn fact, you should work even harder than everyone else during summer vacation. Iโ€™m going to hire a tutor who graduated from the University of Tokyo for you, so listen carefully to what he says and maintain your current grades. Do you understand?โ€

โ€œYes, Mother.โ€

At the Shimazaki familyโ€™s dinner table.

Kotone responded mechanically to the words of Asami, her mother and the head of the household.

The meal was a traditional Japanese spread made entirely of fresh, high-quality ingredients, but she could taste nothing on her tongue.

โ€œBy the way, Kotone, youโ€™ve been going out a lot lately. What have you been up to?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆJust hanging out with friends.โ€

โ€œReally, just friends? You havenโ€™t gotten a boyfriend, have you?โ€

At Asamiโ€™s words, Kotone paused with her chopsticks for a moment.

But she quickly brought the food to her mouth, careful not to let her unease show.

โ€œNo. I donโ€™t have a boyfriendโ€ฆโ€

โ€œIs that so? Well, thatโ€™s fine then.โ€

Asami scrutinized her daughter closely.

Under that sweeping gaze that seemed to take in her entire body, Kotone couldnโ€™t hide her nervousness.

Asamiโ€™s intuition was so sharp that she didnโ€™t miss even the slightest change.

โ€œKotone, I understand that you canโ€™t stop yourself from falling for someone. So, I donโ€™t intend to deny that.โ€

โ€œYesโ€ฆโ€

โ€œBut you know, I wonโ€™t tolerate you playing with fire to an extreme degree. You understand, donโ€™t you? The fact that most high school couples donโ€™t last long.โ€

โ€œYes, of courseโ€ฆโ€

Asami set down her chopsticks and stared intently into Kotoneโ€™s eyes.

โ€œA womanโ€™s virginity has a fundamentally different value than a manโ€™s.โ€

โ€œUmโ€ฆ what do you mean by thatโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œIt means the caliber of the prospective husband I choose for you will be higher. Donโ€™t make a split-second mistake that could lower your own value.โ€

โ€œP-prospective husband?โ€

To Kotone, a high school student, marriage seemed like something far off in the future.

Yet Asami spoke of it as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

Moreover, she spoke on the premise that Asamiโ€”not Kotone herselfโ€”would choose Kotoneโ€™s marriage partner.

โ€œIโ€™ll find you a partner worthy of the next head of the family. You have nothing to worry about. I have no intention of repeating the same mistakes.โ€

Asami paused and gazed at her daughter.

โ€œKotone, youโ€™re different from me. Youโ€™ll be marrying the son of a distinguished family. Iโ€™ve already worked everything out with them.โ€

โ€œT-Thatโ€™s so arbitraryโ€ฆ!โ€

โ€œArbitrary?โ€

โ€œUghโ€ฆโ€

Faced with Asamiโ€™s glare, Kotoneโ€™s urge to protest shriveled up in an instant.

She couldnโ€™t say a word in response.

All Kotone could do was refuse to say โ€œYes.โ€

(Fujimori-kunโ€ฆโ€ฆ)

Because of her motherโ€™s strict upbringing, Kotone was a naive girl who didnโ€™t even know the things any ordinary high school student would naturally know.

Amusement parks, street food, fireworks, arcades, family restaurants, buses and trains, convenience stores, karaokeโ€”Daiki taught her all of these things.

It was precisely because she was able to show her classmates that she, too, was a normal high school girl that she was able to make friends besides Hina.

(Iโ€™m sick of this houseโ€ฆ)

Whenever she felt like she was being treated as a tool for the family, the only face that came to Kotoneโ€™s mind was Daikiโ€™s.

After finishing volleyball practice, Hina Honjo didnโ€™t go straight home; instead, she headed to the back of the gym.

Misaki Honjo, Hinaโ€™s cousin and the volleyball club advisor, was crouched down smoking a cigarette.

โ€œOh, Iโ€™ve spotted a delinquent teacher!โ€

When Hina called out to her jokingly, Misaki chuckled.

โ€œI donโ€™t want to hear that from a student whoโ€™s having an inappropriate romantic relationship~โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re pure, though~โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆSetting aside everything else, being his second girlfriend means youโ€™re definitely not pure at all.โ€

Hina crouched down next to Misaki, who looked conflicted.

The fact that Hina had suddenly dyed her hair and changed her style of casual clothes was clearly due to Daikiโ€™s influence.

Misaki knew this without even asking directly.

โ€œDonโ€™t let guys influence you too much, Hina.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not like Iโ€™m being influenced. If anything, Daikiโ€™s the one being influenced by me.โ€

โ€œThat might be true, or it might not beโ€ฆโ€

Misaki dropped her cigarette butt into her portable ashtray and took out a pack of cigarettes.

Just as she was about to take out a second oneโ€”she realized it was the last one.

โ€œBecause of you, Hina, my cigarette expenses have been piling up lately.โ€

โ€œWhy donโ€™t you just quit?โ€

โ€œIf I could control it, they wouldnโ€™t call it an addictive substance, would they? Itโ€™s the same as how you canโ€™t stop yourself from liking Daiki.โ€

โ€œNow that you mention it, I get what you mean~โ€

Hina watched intently from beside her as Misaki lit her last cigarette.

โ€œBy the way, Misaki nee, how did you start smoking? As far as I know, you didnโ€™t smoke at all until high school.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆWhen I was in college, my boyfriend taught me how, just on a whim.โ€

โ€œWhat? So youโ€™ve totally been influenced by guys, Misaki.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s exactly why Iโ€™m warning you not to end up like me.โ€

Hina grinned.

Even though they were cousins, perhaps because they were related by blood, having their lives thrown into disarray by menโ€”maybe that was the one thing they had in common.

Misaki exhaled a long stream of cigarette smoke.

โ€œSpeaking of which, Hina, are you using birth control properly?โ€

โ€œYeah, of course. Iโ€™m already taking the pill to control my period for the competition, anyway.โ€

โ€œOh, thatโ€™s rightโ€ฆโ€

So that means sheโ€™s not using โ€œthat other thingโ€ she usually relies on.

Misaki knows that the pill has a higher success rate for birth control.

โ€ฆStill, in many ways, Hina is bolder than sheโ€™d imagined.

โ€œWell, if itโ€™s Fujimori-kunโ€™s family, even if something were to happen, heโ€™d definitely take responsibility, right?โ€

โ€œHuh? What do you mean by that?โ€

Hina also has a vague sense that Daikiโ€™s family is quite wealthy.

The place he lives in is on the top floor of a luxury apartment building.

Itโ€™s spacious enough for six people to live comfortably.

Since theyโ€™ve given him a place like that for him to live on his own, even without hearing it directly from him, she canโ€™t help but sense his parentsโ€™ financial standing.

โ€œOhโ€ฆ It seems you havenโ€™t heard this directly from Fujimori-kun.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s that supposed to mean? Iโ€™m super curious.โ€

โ€œBut I donโ€™t know the details either. I donโ€™t know the details, butโ€ฆ Iโ€™m not Fujimori-kunโ€™s homeroom teacher, and I hardly know anything about him, so I did a little digging.โ€

โ€œWhy would you go out of your way to do that?โ€

โ€œWell, thatโ€™sโ€ฆโ€

Misaki doesnโ€™t particularly doubt Daikiโ€™s character either.

Itโ€™s just that, since Hinaโ€”whoโ€™s like a real younger sister to herโ€”is trying so hard to stay by Daikiโ€™s side that sheโ€™s even calling herself his โ€œsecond girlfriend,โ€ Misaki simply wanted to know a little more about what kind of person Daiki really is.

โ€œAnyway, as soon as I started digging around a bit, I got summoned directly by the chairman.โ€

โ€œHuh? By the chairman?โ€

โ€œI think you know this too, Hina, but our chairman is usually a pretty calm person, right? But he spoke to me with the utmost seriousness.โ€

Misaki gazed at Hina as she continued.

โ€œHe told me, โ€˜Donโ€™t go messing with a prestigious family that even the Shimazaki family canโ€™t hold a candle to.โ€™โ€

The Shimazaki family wields immense influence in this region.

The chairman of this academy is also from a branch of the Shimazaki family.

Yet Misaki couldnโ€™t even imagine a family of much higher standing than the Shimazakis.

But Hina just smiled.

โ€œOh, really? So if things go well, I could end up marrying into a family of that high standing? Whatโ€™s that? Daikiโ€™s a total catch, isnโ€™t he? I knew my eye for men was spot-on!โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

Misaki had never felt so distant from Hinaโ€”who was practically like a younger sister to herโ€”as she did today.
