Episode 14 – Triangle

Iโ€™ve Been Working My Hardest as Manager of the Girlsโ€™ Track and Field Team, but Ever Since I Retired, the Team Members Have Been Coming at Me Like Crazy!?

โ€œโ€ฆIs it just my imagination?โ€

Even after returning to my room, I can’t seem to relax.

After all, I promised Yukimura I’d leave the door unlocked.

I’m so anxious about when those guys might burst into the room that every time I think I hear a noise in the hallway, I brace myself, only to breathe a sigh of relief when nothing happens. I’ve been doing this for nearly an hour now.

โ€œUgh, enough already! This is driving me crazyโ€ฆโ€

Iโ€™m even starting to think it might be safer if I just wasnโ€™t in the room at all.

This is the third floor, and the windows donโ€™t open, so if they break in, thereโ€™s nowhere to run.

Maybe I should go to the lobbyโ€ฆ no, it really isnโ€™t a good look for high school students to be wandering around a hotel in the middle of the night.

Besides, if they find out, Iโ€™ll lose all credibility with them.

Honestly, if I were in the same room as them, I might just give upโ€ฆ Wait, hold on a second?

โ€œโ€ฆHello?โ€

โ€œHuh, Mitsuru? What’s up? Why are you calling me on the intercom?โ€

When I called the three of them in their room, Yukimura answered the phone.

โ€œAre all three of you actually in the room?โ€

โ€œYeah, weโ€™re here. Why do you ask? You donโ€™t meanโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWhat do you mean, โ€˜you donโ€™t meanโ€™? Look, I want to talk to everyone for a bit. Can I come over?โ€

โ€œHuh? W-whatโ€™s going on?โ€

โ€œNothing. I just canโ€™t sleep. If you donโ€™t want me to, itโ€™s fine.โ€

โ€œNo way, no way, no way, no way! If you donโ€™t come, Iโ€™m coming over there!โ€

โ€œO-okay, okay. Iโ€™ll be there in a bit, so you guys just stay put, okay?โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€

Before I hung up, I heard Yukimura and the othersโ€™ voices on the other end of the line.

โ€œMitsuโ€™s coming over right now!โ€

โ€œNo way, why!? Yay!โ€

โ€œYou two need to clean up the room. Hurry, hurry!โ€

With those voices of joy echoing in the distance, I gently set the receiver down.

The fact that just the thought of me coming over has three beautiful girls getting so excited and happy is, to be honest, kind of nice.

But I canโ€™t just get carried away.

The place Iโ€™m heading to right now is a den of beasts.

And I mustnโ€™t forget that Iโ€™m the bait.

So why am I going there of my own free will? Itโ€™s not that Iโ€™m lonely or anything like that.

As things stand now, I have no idea when or at what moment one of those three might come into the room.

I canโ€™t stand the thought of waiting for morning while silently enduring that fear.

Besides, if they really did attack me, thereโ€™s nowhere to run in this roomโ€”it would be game over.

However, I figured that if I went to their room, at least I wouldnโ€™t have to worry about that.

If all three of them are in the room together, even if one of them tries to act on her own, the other two will surely stop her.

So, as a result, itโ€™s safer than being alone in my room.

Hoping that my judgment wasnโ€™t wrong, I took a deep breath and slowly left my room.

โ—‡

โ€˜Knock knockโ€™

Arriving at the door to the three girlsโ€™ room, I steeled myself and knocked.

โ€œComingโ€ฆ Oh, Mitchi, youโ€™re early. Everyone, Mitchiโ€™s here!โ€

Shiratori, who opened the door, said this cheerfully to the two inside, and Yukimura came out from the back of the room.

โ€œMitsu, you really came.โ€

โ€œWell, I was the one who suggested it.โ€

โ€œHehe, you were actually feeling lonely, werenโ€™t you? Come on, come on, hurry up and come inside.โ€

Yukimura took my hand and led me inside, but Shirotori said, โ€œHey, Mai, thatโ€™s a little unfair,โ€ and pulled Yukimura away from me.

I see. Things are going exactly as I expected so far.

In this so-called three-way standoff, I should be safe.

Please, donโ€™t go thinking youโ€™re showing team spirit just by cooperating at a time like this.

โ€œAh, Sen-chan.โ€

Once inside, the room was so spacious it could easily accommodate twice as many people as the three of us, and Hayase, sitting demurely in seiza right in the middle, was waving at us.

โ€œGood work, Hayase. Sorry for barging in on you like this.โ€

โ€œNah, Iโ€™m actually happy about it. But whatโ€™s up, really?โ€

โ€œOh, itโ€™s nothing major. Itโ€™s just that todayโ€™s the last time weโ€™ll be on a trip like this, staying in a hotel with this group. I thought Iโ€™d like to have a nice, relaxed chat.โ€

โ€œHuh, so Sen-chan has that side to him, too. Come on, donโ€™t just stand thereโ€”sit down over there.โ€

As I sat down on the cushion prepared next to Hayase, Yukimura and Shiratori immediately took seats around me.

Before I knew it, I was surrounded by the three of them.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

I braced myself, thinking maybe coming here had been a mistake after all, but the three of them seemed somehow back to their usual selves.

โ€œMitchi, youโ€™ve really taken care of us these past two years.โ€

โ€œCome on, donโ€™t get all formal.โ€

โ€œButโ€”I mean, weโ€™ve been through a lot, havenโ€™t we?โ€

โ€œYeah, I guess so. Weโ€™ve been through a lot.โ€

โ€œMitchi, what stands out most in your memory about me?โ€

โ€œShiratori, huh. I was totally devastated when you finished last, about ten meters behind me in our first race.โ€

โ€œOh, come on, forget about that.โ€

โ€œHaha, like Iโ€™d forget that. But youโ€™ve really gotten fast, havenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œYeah. Itโ€™s all thanks to you, Mitchi.โ€

Shiratori looked happy; she didnโ€™t make any moves to attack me or say anything weird.

I donโ€™t know why, but she seems mentally stable right now.

โ€œMitsu, what about your memories with me?โ€

โ€œYukimura, remember that time we had a fight during practice and you ran off?โ€

โ€œOh, that wasnโ€™t running off or anything.โ€

โ€œCome on, you just bolted out on your own and ended up crying by the riverbank.โ€

โ€œO-oh, come on, stop it.โ€

โ€œBut I feel like weโ€™ve gradually started seeing eye to eye since then. Itโ€™s kind of strange, isnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆItโ€™s just that youโ€™ve started accommodating me more.โ€

Yukimura, looking happy yet embarrassed, blushed and lowered her head.

Her eyes werenโ€™t unfocused, and her breathing wasnโ€™t heavy.

She looked like a perfectly ordinary, endearing girl.

โ€œSen-chan, what are your memories of me?โ€

Finally, Hayase asked, tugging at my sleeve in a sulky sort of way.

โ€œThe thing that stands out most about you, Hayase, is definitely this Inter-High. That final jumpโ€”setting a personal best like that almost brought me to tears.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s thanks to your cheering, Sen-chan. And I think the tape you wrapped around my leg at the end helped, too.โ€

As Hayase looked back on it with deep emotion, Shirotori suddenly looked displeased for some reason.

โ€œMitchii, have you been taping anyone elseโ€™s legs besides mine?โ€

โ€œW-well, of course I did. Iโ€™m the manager, after all.โ€

โ€œDid you touch Masaโ€™s leg?โ€

โ€œD-donโ€™t put it like thatโ€”it sounds so rude.โ€

โ€œDid you touch it?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆI donโ€™t know.โ€

I tried to play dumb, but it was a stretch.

I mean, isnโ€™t it impossible to wrap tape without touching the body?

โ€œHmm, so youโ€™re trying to dodge the question. Mitchi, weโ€™ve got a lot to talk about when we get back.โ€

โ€œC-canโ€™t we talk about it right here and now?โ€

โ€œIโ€™d rather talk when itโ€™s just the two of us.โ€

โ€œAh, Moe-chan, thatโ€™s not fair. I want to talk to Sen-chan alone when we get back, too.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s rude of both of you to leave me out of this. Man, youโ€™ll make time for me first, right?โ€

The three of them were staring intently at me.

This is bad. Itโ€™s turned into a weird standoff.

Is there any way to talk my way out of thisโ€ฆ? Nah, there isnโ€™t.

Well, then, at leastโ€ฆ

โ€œAlright, letโ€™s all play cards.โ€

โ€œHey, Mitsuru, donโ€™t try to dodge the issue.โ€

โ€œHold on, Yukimura. Letโ€™s be fair about this. How about we go in order of who wins the card game?โ€

Itโ€™s a desperate measure, but itโ€™s probably the only way to calm things down.

โ€œHmm, well, I guess that makes sense. Everyone, letโ€™s play!โ€

Yukimura, already eager to get started, pulled a deck of cards out of her bag.

โ€œAlright, Iโ€™m not going to lose. Oh, by the way, what happens if Mitchi comes in first?โ€

โ€œAh, thatโ€™s true. In that caseโ€ฆ hey, if I win, does that mean we put off our date?โ€

โ€œNo way.โ€

Shiratori slammed her fist down on the table.

โ€œโ€ฆI guess so.โ€

โ€œIf that ever happens, I’ll bury myself and Mitchi together in the woods behind this hotel.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆUm, Yukimura?โ€

โ€œIf Mitsuru says something so mean, I’ll set the room on fire and die with him.โ€

โ€œH-huh, setting a fire isn’t a good ideaโ€ฆ Um, Hayase?โ€

โ€œI want to take Sen-chan’s head and go to a faraway place where no one knows us.โ€

Nice boat! โ€ฆLike thatโ€™s ever going to happen!

Wait, no matter what, am I going to die?

โ€œโ€ฆHaha, well, just kidding. Anyway, letโ€™s get started. How about we play โ€˜Big Richโ€™?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

The groupโ€™s response was so in unison it felt almost refreshing.

The three of them picked up the cards theyโ€™d been dealt, glaring at each other as if trying to intimidate one another.
