V5 Episode 4 – The life of Takanashi

The Former Swordmaster Who Pretends to Be the Worst, and the Schoolโ€™s Top-Ranked Chairmanโ€™s Daughter Whoโ€™s Way Too Sweet in Public, Itโ€™s a Real Problem

โ€œSo it really was you, Nishimiya senseiโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆYou say โ€˜it really wasโ€™? It seems youโ€™ve been suspicious of me for a while now, Aragaki?โ€

As I burst into the so-called โ€œchemistry prep roomโ€โ€”which was really just an empty storage closetโ€”I found Rika there, her face contorted in agony. And there stood Nishimiya, wearing a smile more sinister than Iโ€™d ever seen on him before.

When I addressed the chemistry teacher, he asked me back without changing his expression.

There was something eerie about the way he maintained his calm tone.

โ€œSince we have this opportunity, letโ€™s hear your thoughts, Aragaki-kun.โ€

He wasnโ€™t trying to buy time.

Nishimiya had likely posed this question out of pure curiosity. In that case, I had a few questions of my own.

Rikaโ€™s complexion had improved, so I decided to try to extract some information from her.

โ€œThe first time I felt something was off was when I was being scolded by Kusunoki sensei. When you looked at Rika, you were giving her a strangely leering gaze. โ€ฆโ€ฆAt that point, I thought it was just my imagination, so I didnโ€™t press the issue.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆI see. Go on.โ€

In response to my observation, she nodded as if strangely impressed.

Confirming that, I continued my story.

โ€œLetโ€™s say it was a coincidence that you conveniently showed up in the city at night. But the time you really let the cat out of the bag was when we spoke at the research facility yesterday.โ€

โ€œOhโ€ฆ? What exactly do you mean by a โ€˜slip of the tongueโ€™?โ€

โ€œWhen I regained consciousness, you said this to me.โ€

And there, I paused just once.

After taking a slow, deep breath, I drove home the point.

โ€œYou said, โ€˜I saved Rika twiceโ€™โ€ฆโ€

โ€”That was when I collapsed after eating Rikaโ€™s home-cooked meal.

Nishimiya, who treated me and explained the situation, mentioned it casually during small talk. Itโ€™s true that there have been two recent occasions where I could be said to have saved my childhood friend.

One was the attack at the coffee shop.

As for that, itโ€™s no problem if people heard the rumors on campus. But,

โ€œThe battle with the dragon inside the dungeon. Thereโ€™s no way she could know about that.โ€
โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

Yes, the problem was the other one.

During the battle with the dragon that occurred in the dungeon, the only two people present were me and Rika. Even within the academy, the story was that Rika was the one who defeated the dragon.

Under those circumstances, the only person who could definitively claim that I saved my childhood friend wasโ€”

โ€œโ€”The only one who could say that is the person who rigged the dungeon.โ€

The only other person who was โ€œpresumed to have been there.โ€

The moment that remark hinted at it, my suspicions toward Nishimiya had already grown. Then Takanashiโ€™s involvement came to light, and I was forced to decide how to proceedโ€ฆ

โ€œThanks to Rika and Ed working together, we were finally able to drag you out into the open. You, who so underhandedly manipulate and use others.โ€

โ€œI seeโ€ฆ So, I was lured out by you, was I?โ€

Nishimiya nodded quietly in response to my deduction.

He didnโ€™t deny it. On the contrary,

โ€œImpressive, Aragaki-kun. โ€ฆIโ€™ll give you a passing grade.โ€

He clapped his hands and offered words of praise.

Then, looking somewhat satisfied, he made this proposal.

โ€œItโ€™s hardly a reward, but why donโ€™t I tell you the โ€˜true identity of Takanashiโ€™ that youโ€™ve been so eager to knowโ€ฆ!โ€

โ€œโ€ฆWhat?โ€

He spoke cheerfully, as if he couldnโ€™t wait to tell me.

He spread his arms wide in a dramatic gesture and said,

โ€œYou saw a woman who looked like Azusa in the East City at night and chased after her, didnโ€™t you? That woman was one of the โ€˜hostsโ€™ I used in my brilliant research. Andโ€”โ€

Nishimiya revealed.

What he said could be called a violation of ethics in human society.

โ€œShe is a semi-artificially created life formโ€”in other words, a โ€˜designer babyโ€™,โ€ he said.

โ—†

โ€œA โ€˜designer babyโ€™โ€ฆ you say!?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s right. Iโ€™m a test subject created through genetic manipulationโ€”specifically, a โ€˜failed experimentโ€™ that was never supposed to be bornโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆThat canโ€™t beโ€ฆโ€

Takanashi began to speak haltingly, as if she had given up on everything.

Edward, hearing her story, was so stunned he could barely speak. This technology is, of course, considered a โ€œtabooโ€ from an ethical standpoint.

โ€œI wasnโ€™t even born in Japan. I snuck with Nishimiya and over here.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆ!โ€

And then, the way she was treated like a disposable pawn.

Edwardโ€™s fists trembled, and he bit his lip hard, his anger plain to see. He couldnโ€™t forgive a single thing surrounding Takanashi. He must not forgive it, he thought.

At the same time, something clicked inside the boy.

โ€œSo thatโ€™s why you were so fixated on finding a โ€˜place to belongโ€™โ€ฆ?โ€

The girl gave no answer to Edwardโ€™s question.

But her silence was as good as an affirmation. Because of the miserable life she had led, the girl named Takanashi had been searching for something that would acknowledge her.

Perhaps that was why she had followed Nishimiya and resigned herself to being treated like a sacrificial pawn.

Becauseโ€”

โ€œI knew I was just being used.โ€

Even if that was the case.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆBut at least during that time, I had a โ€˜role.โ€™ Even if I was treated like a pawn to be discarded, I could believe that I, too, had a โ€˜place to belong.โ€™โ€

โ€œWhatโ€ฆ!?โ€

Takanashi sat down on the spot, hugging her knees.

Seeing her like that, Edward shook his head from side to side.

โ€œThen, that ends today. โ€ฆAzusa!โ€

โ€œHuhโ€ฆ?โ€

And, reaching out his hand, he declared.

โ€œStarting today, your โ€˜placeโ€™ is right next to me!โ€โ€”he said.

There was no basis for it.

Yet, Edward said it with conviction.

All that was there was a pure desire to save Takanashi. And nothing but his complete trust in Saito.

โ€œIf itโ€™s Saito, heโ€™ll definitelyโ€ฆ take down that despicable bastard!โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆEdโ€ฆward?โ€

Holding onto that belief, the red-haired boy stood tall.

But the girl lowered her eyesโ€”

โ€œItโ€™s impossibleโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆHuh?โ€

She murmured softly, then looked down again.

And then she said this.

โ€œAragaki doesnโ€™t know. โ€ฆJust how meticulous that man is.โ€

โ—†

โ€œGuhโ€ฆ!?โ€

โ€œOh? It seems the poison is finally starting to take effect.โ€

โ€”It was the very moment I was about to raise my voice in rage.

Thatโ€™s when a searing pain shot through my chest, and blood-tinged vomit rose in my throat.

โ€œYouโ€ฆ what on earthโ€ฆ!?โ€

โ€œDidnโ€™t I tell you? I am, after all, a researcher.โ€

As I asked, desperately trying to steady my ragged breathing, Nishimiya replied with a defiant laugh.

โ€œI know a little something about chemistry,โ€ he said.
