The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming
The next morning, I woke up at my usual time and went through my morning routine of studying.
After studying for about an hour, I went to the living room, ate the breakfast my mom had made, and then left the house.
On the way, I studied again while walking and looking at my phone, and before I knew it, I had arrived at the station.
It was while I was staring blankly at my phone, waiting for the train to arrive.
โAkkun. Akkun.โ
A familiar voice called out from behind me.
โโฆโฆAh, Kanade.โ
โGood morning!โ
When I turned around, there she wasโKanade.
โGood morning. What a coincidence.โ
We hadnโt planned to meet, so I never expected weโd be waiting for the same train.
โIt really is. What an amazing coincidence. It almost feels like fate.โ
โโฆโฆNo, itโs not quite that extreme.โ
โI canโt help but feel itโs fate!โ
โโฆโฆYeah.โ
Ever since I reunited with Kanade yesterday, Iโve been thinking about this a little: somehow, compared to when we were kids, Kanade seems to have become a lot more intimidating overall.
Well, since sheโs always had a bit of a pushy personality, Iโm taking it pretty positivelyโฆ but I donโt know. Sometimes, sheโs just a little scary.
โโฆโฆAkkun. Is something wrong?โ
โHuh? โฆOh, no, itโs nothing.โ
โReally? You donโt look so good. Want to take a break?โ
โIโm fine, Iโm fine.โ
โAre you sure? You shouldnโt push yourself too hard.โ
โฆI never thought Kanade would worry about my health.
โWell, the trainโs here. Letโs go.โ
โOkay.โ
We boarded the train that had just arrived.
โAkkun.โ
There had been no conversation between us for a while, but Kanade finally spoke up.
โIs school fun?โ
It was such an abrupt question.
โItโs not like itโs fun or anything. School is a place to study hard, right?โ
And studying isnโt exactly fun.
โโฆโฆHmm.โ
โโฆโฆโ
โAkkun. Are you being bullied by your classmates or something?โ
โHuh?โ
It was such a leap in the conversation.
I couldnโt help but widen my eyes in surprise.
โโฆโฆNo, not really.โ
โReally? But even though we just saw each other again yesterday, you donโt seem to be having as much fun as you used to, Akkun.โ
โฆโฆWho do you think is to blame for that?
โThatโs why I got worried.โ
โโฆโฆIโm fine. Iโm not being bullied or anything.โ
โReally? You shouldnโt push yourself too hard.โ
โIโm not pushing myselfโฆโ
โIf anything happens, you should talk to me.โ
โIf I talk to you, will you do something about it?โ
โOf course.โ
Kanade gave a bright smile.
โIf itโs for none other than you, Akkun, I can do anything, you know?โ
I see.
If thatโs the case, thereโs no way I can talk to her about it.
โโฆโฆKanade, arenโt you the one who acted without reading the room after school yesterday? Are you okay?โ
As I looked out the train window at the scenery, I suddenly remembered what happened after school yesterday.
Yesterday, Kanade was invited out to hang out by many of our classmatesโeveryone except meโbut in the end, she turned them all down and stopped by my house.
She must have prioritized spending time with meโsomeone whoโs at the very bottom of the class hierarchyโover spending time with her other classmates.
โโฆโฆPeople might think Iโm getting too big for my shoesโ
โWhat would happen if people thought you were getting too big for your britches?โ
โโฆโฆYou might get bullied.โ
โHaha. Right, right.โ
Kanade laughed.
โFrom someone whoโs nearly died, getting bullied by some high schoolers is nothing.โ
โฆI wonder.
From Kanade right now, I sense a presence comparable to a soldier who survived the battlefield and returned home.
โโฆNo way. You canโt let yourself get bullied.โ
โHm?โ
โโฆNow that youโve finally recovered from your illness and can enjoy school life again, You only get to experience school life once, so you have to enjoy it.โ
Kanadeโs eyes widened at my words.
โYouโre saying that, A-kun?โ
Then, Kanade fired back with a valid point.
Itโs true that just a moment ago, I said school is a place for studying, not for having fun. For someone like me to tell Kanade to enjoy herselfโฆ thatโs a contradiction if ever there was one.
โโฆWell then, if youโre going to enjoy school life too, Iโll enjoy it too.โ
โโฆIs that so?โ
โYeah.โ
Kanade nodded firmly.
โWeโre in this together, after all.โ
I see. A brand-new backstory just popped into my head.
Soon, the train arrived at the station closest to our school.
โAh.โ
Just as we passed through the ticket gates, I remembered something.
โCome to think of it, Kanade, didnโt you leave something in my room yesterday?โ
I asked as I rummaged through my bag.
โโฆโฆโ
โโฆโฆKanade?โ
โAh. โฆYeah. I might have left my charger.โ
โThatโs right. Here.โ
I held out the AC adapter Iโd taken from my bag, but Kanade hesitated to take it.
โItโs fine, you know. You couldโve just used the AC adapter yourself, Akkun. Itโs just a consumable item.โ
โNo way. I have to be thorough about things like this.โ
โโฆโฆโ
โItโs precisely because itโs youโฆ that I want to be thorough.โ
โWell, I guess I have no choice then!โ
In a complete turnaround from her earlier reluctance, Kanade snatched the AC adapter from my hand with a beaming smile.
โAkkun! What are you spacing out for?! Come on, come on, letโs hurry to school!โ
โโฆโฆYouโre suddenly super energetic.โ
Itโs been a little over a day since we reunited.
I still donโt seem to be able to keep up with Kanadeโs high spirits now that sheโs back.
