Episode 56 – Coffee shop

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

โ€œPhew, it was hot out there.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re right.โ€

When we arrived at the coffee shop where we were meeting, we were both drenched in sweat because of the scorching heat today.

The moment we stepped into the coffee shop, which had a slightly retro vibe, a cool breezeโ€”a stark contrast to the heat outsideโ€”enveloped us, and we immediately felt relieved.

โ€œTwo people?โ€

โ€œAh, yes.โ€

โ€œWait, Kanade. Takagaki-san is coming later.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆHehe. I forgot.โ€

Kanade smiled and told the server that one person was running late.

The server then led us to a table instead of the counter and brought us the menus shortly after.

โ€œAkkun. Whatโ€™ll you have?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll have coffee.โ€

“Got it. Oh, but there are actually lots of different kinds of coffee, you know?โ€

โ€œHuh, really?โ€

I peeked at the menu Kanade was holding.

Thenโ€ฆ as Kanade was leaning forward, I caught a brief glimpse of her upper body through the neckline of her T-shirt, and I hurriedly sat back down in my seat.

โ€œHuh? Akkun. Whatโ€™s wrong?โ€

โ€œAhaha. Nothingโ€ฆโ€

I gave a wry smile, trying to cover it up.

โ€œโ€ฆHmm? You seem kind of suspicious.โ€

โ€œI’m not.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆMmm. Really?โ€

โ€œReally. Kanade, have I ever lied to you before?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œNo way!โ€

โ€œI knew it.โ€

โ€œYeah. Hehe. Hehehehe.โ€

We smiled at each other.

โ€œโ€ฆYou two, are you creating your own little world even in a place like this?โ€

Just then, Takagaki-san, the person we were meeting, appeared before us.

โ€ฆBut for some reason, she looked fed up.

โ€œAh, Ayaka-chan. Hello.โ€

โ€œHello.โ€

โ€œHehe. Iโ€™ve been waiting for you, Ayaka-chan. Ayaka-chan, who has Akkun worried about her! Ayaka-chan, whoโ€™s making Akkun anxious!โ€

โ€œW-wait a minuteโ€ฆ! Hagiwara-kun! This girl is going full throttle right off the bat. What on earth happened?!โ€

โ€œHuh? Nothing happened.โ€

โ€œUgh, seriously. Dealing with you guys is so exhaustingโ€ฆ!โ€

Hmm, Takagaki-sanโ€ฆ Why is she so irritated right off the bat?

โ€œCustomers, have you decided what youโ€™d like to order?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆAh, sorry. Weโ€™ll decide right away.โ€

Since the server approached usโ€”who hadnโ€™t placed an order yetโ€”we shifted our focus to ordering first.

Five minutes laterโ€ฆ

โ€œHereโ€™s your iced coffee.โ€

โ€œThank you.โ€

Drinks were served in front of all of us.

โ€œWell then, Ayaka-chan. Thanks for taking time out of your busy day today.โ€

โ€œNo, donโ€™t worry about it. โ€ฆJust kidding. Actually, do worry about it. It takes quite a bit of energy to deal with a couple like that, whoโ€™s been giving off such a sweet vibe, right after Iโ€™ve finished my errands.โ€

โ€œHehe. Sorry about that.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆWhy is she giving me such a smug look?โ€

Takagaki let out a sigh.

โ€œโ€ฆBut thank you for helping me out with everything. Thanks for the photos, too.โ€

Takagaki bowed her head.

โ€œDonโ€™t worry about it. Itโ€™s something I enjoy doing.โ€

โ€œHearing you say thatโ€ฆ really helps.โ€

โ€œSoโ€ฆ about that,โ€

I took a sheet of paper Iโ€™d printed at a convenience store out of my bag and handed it to her.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆWhatโ€™s this?โ€

Takagaki-san looked a little confused.

โ€œThis is the photo we took the other day.โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

โ€œI printed out just this oneโ€”the one where you look your bestโ€”and brought it over. I thought your little brother might like it better on paper than as a digital file.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆHey, Takagaki-san?โ€

Maybe she didnโ€™t want it after all?

I was panicking a little inside.

โ€œโ€ฆThank you.โ€

After a moment, Takagaki-san wiped something glistening at the corner of her eye with her finger and said that.

โ€œIโ€™m sure heโ€™ll be happy. So, thank you so muchโ€ฆโ€

โ€œNo, no. Donโ€™t worry about it.โ€

โ€ฆHonestly, I really wish she wouldnโ€™t make a big deal out of something this small.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHey, Takagaki-san.โ€

Now that the atmosphere had warmed up a bit, I decided to get straight to the point.

โ€œIs your little brotherโ€ฆ maybe in the hospital right nowโ€ฆ or something?โ€

In that instant, I felt the warm atmosphere that had been there just a moment ago turn completely cold.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry. Iโ€™m sorry for bringing this up out of the blueโ€ฆ Itโ€™s just that lately, youโ€™ve seemed a little down.โ€

What on earth am I trying to explain right now?

โ€œโ€ฆI thought maybe that might be the case. Andโ€ฆโ€

Andโ€ฆ

โ€œโ€ฆI just hope itโ€™s all just my imagination.โ€

Takagaki-sanโ€™s recent slump.

The speculation Kanade and I came up withโ€ฆ

If it were all just my imaginationโ€ฆ

If it really were all just my imagination, Takagaki-san would surely be angry.

I wouldnโ€™t be able to complain if she spilled the full glass of tea in my face, asking if I wanted my little brother to suffer.

โ€ฆBut even if I was wrong, even if she did spill the tea on me, I found myself thinking that would be better.

โ€œโ€ฆHehe.โ€

Takagaki-san smiled.

โ€œHagiwara-kun, youโ€™ve never even met my brother, so why are you looking so serious?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œEven if something happened to my brotherโ€ฆ itโ€™s none of your business, right? You donโ€™t need to be so down as if you were the one involved.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆI just donโ€™t want that.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œSeeing my friend look so miserable.โ€

Takagakiโ€™s eyes widened.

โ€œโ€ฆYou really shouldnโ€™t say things like that in front of Ichinose-san.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not true. Kanade feels the same way.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆAhaha.โ€

Kanade scratched her head, looking a little awkward.

โ€œโ€ฆI see.โ€

Takagaki-san looked down.

โ€œYouโ€™re so kind. โ€ฆYou two.โ€

Then she gave a wry smile.

โ€œThatโ€™s right. My younger brotherโ€ฆ just as you two suspected, heโ€™s in the hospital right now.โ€

As if resigning herself to it, Takagaki-san told us.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry. For everything.โ€

Then, as if apologizing, she bowed her head.
